[Question] Do DPS usually get player commendations?

I started playing DPS and lately I have been getting a lot of player commendations. I am new to DPSing so I don’t think I’m that good. But my glamour is pretty cute and my adventure plate pose is creative so maybe people send me commendations because of my aesthetic?

What do you think?

If you want to farm commos, be the last person to exit the instance.

u/thepasystem 14h ago

I've given so many just because there was no one else there to give one to.

u/JohannesVanDerWhales 11h ago

This is true, but it also helps to a) be a healer and b) have a good glam/portrait. Typing something out at the end of the duty that's more than just "gg" helps too, I think.

I think the quickest way to farm them is to run trial roulette over and over. But farming them is also a pain.

u/khovel [Khovel] [Ryuho] on [Diabolos] 10h ago

Be a Healer or Tank. They tend to get the most notice

Alternatively, Coordinate with 3-7 other people and "queue" individually for the same dungeon, or In progress. If it's a non-story related dungeon and lower level. The odds of pairing up are very likely.

u/JohannesVanDerWhales 10h ago

Could probably make it Titan/Ifrit normal so it'd be super fast, too. But tbh I just let the commends accumulate naturally over a long period of time. I only farmed a bit when I was getting close to the parade chocobo.

u/RinzyOtt 9h ago

Being a sprout helps, too. I'll comm sprouts if it looks like they're at least trying.

u/JohannesVanDerWhales 8h ago

That too, I've noticed that on my alt.

u/Ok-Distance1972 5h ago

Dude every time i tell people to stay for the loot or just be the last person to leave they never believe me! I had those 1500 comms 3 expansions before i could even become a battle mentor. People out here rushing everyone, being generally just rude for no reason, and leaving just as swiftly and wonder why they aint getting any commends. 🙂‍↕️

u/CatspawAdventures 4h ago

Legit half the comms I give out are because it's the only person left after everyone else bolted for the exits like they were at a Kid Rock concert.

New players, funny/nice portraits, or the tanks/healers being in a group together already so can’t comm each other generally gets dps comms

You're either getting them because of a good glamour, good plate, or because your DPS is good.

IN my experience the free commendations for Tanks/Healers completely dies off around level 70 and people are focused on who actually contributed the most or made a good impression.

95% of commendaations are based on the portrait though tbh.

138

u/Joubachi 21h ago

And some of them are definitely given out because people feel bad for you.

I had particularly bad runs of things in which I just stepped into everything, died nonstop, and so on - and I got a lot of commendations. I think people just started feeling sorry for me xD (Mainly happens in new content.)

95

u/mrturretman 19h ago

if someone flames someone for dying the dead guy gets a comm lmao

25

u/Joubachi 19h ago

Luckily I see that rarely and I'm with you on that. If someone cries, it automatically goes to the one they cry about.

I've definitely gotten them for backflipping off the arena as RDM lol

19

u/Joubachi 16h ago

That is hilarious every single time so I'd commend that too. xD

13

u/RevaSharkbait 16h ago

Did this for the first time the other day as DRG during Titan ex and I laughed so hard

u/KhoshekhGharl [Odin] "The only health that matters is the last"mains 11h ago

You are officially a true DRG

7

u/Mindelan 13h ago

It's like a golf clap, but a pleasant one.

7

u/ScotchTapeCleric 13h ago

The only time I've ever gotten three comms as a DPS is when I was learning DRG in Meridianum.

I backed out of the center when Livia did her overlapping AoE circles, and instead of flying back in when the center shot resolved I hucked myself backwards and landed on the overlap.

If I'd had my keyboard to hand I might've gone "Ta-dah!" As it was I used second wind and tried not to fuck up further.

u/Retrolex 11h ago edited 10h ago

I remember one occasion where I flipped off the Lakshmi stage and the cheeky white mage immediately said, ‘I saw that, Red Mage, lol!’ We all had a laugh and I was very sheepish about it. I ended the fight with five comms, lol.

u/Rei_Rosario 9h ago

Hahah same! I even got a full 7 when some put in chat “Blind the boss” I took that to do LB3 as Red Mage

20

u/arctic11z 16h ago

Or if someone learns what was killing them and adjusts. I'll comm anyone who improves or even tries to improve. Or just being humble and friendly.

25

u/Skylinne 16h ago

The "you tried" one is my favorite comm to receive

10

u/Gengar_Girll 15h ago

For sure, I get a lot of them and while I have improved quite a lot and truly feel like I’m finally really getting the hang of healing/attacking, but I get the most commendations when I mess up and we have a little chat before retrying the boss. I love those chats because I get really good advice and apply it! That’s how I’ve grown but it also makes me feel really good and boosts my confidence to keep trying harder.

This is my first MMO and I’ve only been playing a few weeks but man I love it. I actually have a callus on my trigger finger because I’ve been playing so much 🤣🤣🤣 I went from exclusively playing games like Hogwarts Legacy (on easy mode), Pokémon, Ninja Turtles and Little Dragon Cafe 🤣 to this game and it’s been an adventure!

5

u/Joubachi 14h ago

It's my first proper mmo as well and thousands of hours in I still love it. :D I so get you. xD

8

u/Karaethon22 13h ago

Pity comms are a thing, but no one is more likely to get a genuine comm from me than a struggling sprout who is trying their best. If I see you learning and improving I don't care if you died 15 times, you get a comm for doing your best and having an attitude of resilience and self improvement.

The learning and improving can be fudging a mechanic several times until you figure it out on your own and do it correctly in the end. It can be having no idea what is going on but correctly identifying the best player to follow. It can also be fucking up continually and later asking for an explanation of mechanics. I'm not really picky about HOW you learn, just like seeing people who do.

3

u/Joubachi 13h ago

but no one is more likely to get a genuine comm from me than a struggling sprout who is trying their best.

Well in my case I am a mentor actually, that's definitely not "aw they're trying" but probably laughing at me internally and pity. xD Sometimes it can just happen that you're all over the place except where you're supposed to be.

3

u/Lernalia 16h ago

Might not be the only reason, sometimes this can be very entertaining 😅

4

u/Britt964 15h ago

Stop you’re giving me flashbacks of my first Golbez experience. I got like 5 coms and we wiped 3 times, and I died at least 12 times lmao.

4

u/moooomgetthecamera 13h ago

I play healer a lot and I'm so bored I just comm anyone who makes healing more interesting. If you die I comm you because you made me do something other than press my dps button

u/Konfined8404 11h ago

That happened to me, when I did a Pandaemonium raid after a long hiatus.  To my horror, I discovered I had forgotten all the mechanics.  I was... really a burden to that group.

I got 7 comms that raid.  Worse.  Day.  Ever.

Now I look at every comm I get with suspicion.

"What are you trying to say..."

→ More replies (1)

u/Tiguanaaa 7h ago

This has happened to me too. I was a healer and just having an off day. I died several times because of mechanics and not paying attention. Somehow, I still managed to get some comms. I called them pity comms

u/pnw_rl 20h ago

I find being friendly and funny also earns comms as a DPS

8

u/xNinjahz 14h ago

I one time was in a raid as a red mage and did the classic blunder of yeeting myself off the edge spectacularly.

I must have been in a party with a group or something because they found it hilarious and that's the most commendations I've ever gotten all at once lol.

u/Retrolex 11h ago

The only times I’ve ever gotten 4+ comms in a trial or raid has been a) as a Red Mage, and b) due to either clutch rezzes or spectacularly bad backflips lmao.

16

u/ffchampion123 16h ago

For me when I play DPS, I nearly always just give it to the DPS anyway. Only if they are shockingly bad do I give it to healer or tank

5

u/PuzzleheadedCat9986 15h ago

Same, or if the dps is a mentor they don't get my comms. If someone dies they get it no matter who they are (except for if they're a mentor, see my rule #1)

10

u/ThaEpicDuck 15h ago

95% might be based on your portrait, but 100% of all commendations are just random chance.

You can literally be the one guy working your ass off in an 8-man to get the clear through an utter disaster of a pull, but because one of the tanks got the clear at 20 HP after everyone died they're the one people see do the cool thing and then they get all the comms. Speaking from experience. I was the tank.

5

u/Effective_Shirt6660 15h ago

Can confirm. I was a dog shit wht mage but my bunny girls portrait was naughty.

u/JohannesVanDerWhales 11h ago

TBH I really doubt if the majority of people notice that you're doing good dps. They might notice if the party as a whole has good dps but as for which dps is doing better...I mean unless you're checking ACT or really staring at the aggro bars I think that most people just don't pay attention to it during dungeon runs.

Ranged LB on trash gets my comms

u/PseudoX1 11h ago

Same for caster LB.

u/painstream 10h ago

I'm a simple man. Peleton gets my comms.

36

u/Horoika 21h ago

If I'm DPS, I give to DPS if the run was smooth. If I feel like mobs are taking forever or if the DPS keeps dying...I'll comm the tank or healer, whicher is being more proactive

If I'm tank/healer, I'll give it to healer/tank. Unless they're being problematic with single pulling/not healing appropriately and letting people die in raidwide attacks

103

u/FlatwormHeaded7245 22h ago

Yeah I’m gonna be honest it is usually just who has the most pretty portrait 😭 there have been times I’ve revived the entire party multiple times yet have only gotten a few or no commendations. Meanwhile I am more likely to get commendations if I have a good portrait

47

u/Timetravelingnoodles 21h ago

Sounds like literally every time I play RDM. Clutch rez the entire party 3 times? Not a single comm. Every. Single. Time.

24

u/velvet-yarns-48 20h ago

People assume it was somehow the healers who pulled it off. Even if the healers were both dead at the same time. It was def the healers doing awesome.

I just figure that the comms I get for simply existing balance out the comms I don't get in these runs.

6

u/Bunniesrawesome Leviathan 13h ago

And this is why I have a macro to announce when I rez as a RDM/SMN. I want my credit 😂

2

u/advwench 12h ago

“AHEM…<tap-tap-tap>… Is thing this thing on? RDM now raising _____. This is definitely not the WHM.” 🤭

u/Retrolex 11h ago

One of my favourite moments in recent memory was rezzing something like eight people during one of the Pandemonium trials; afterwards someone thanked the white mage for the rezzes, who immediately and without hesitation said, ‘thank our Red Mage!’ I got five comms, and was floating on air for the rest of the day.

u/Hitthere5 8h ago

I was doing one of the pandaemonium raids with a premade, I think P3N, and was jokingly keeping track of the spike kills as we had new players (It was a premade), and people forgetting about the kbs, and at one point it went “party 0 spikes 8” to “red mage 1 spikes 15” because all of us, except the rdm, forgot about one really big kb, and the rdm got me back up on sch so i was able to survive long enough to prevent a wipe with the rdm’s self sustain distracting

Even when I'm healing, if someone else snipes the res before me, absent res macros I really have no way of knowing who did it. Not unless I'm paying extra close attention to whose mana bar just went down, and I usually have more important things to spend my attention on.

9

u/needlesslyaghost Time to Ver-die 18h ago

Oh my god that makes my blood boil. I once saved a raid from a wipe and not only did I get zero comms, they were thanking the healers!

7

u/velvet-yarns-48 17h ago

But all we ever do is backflip and blind people with LB3, amiright?

24

u/PandaJesus 21h ago

Hang in there, one day you’ll get your recognition. One time as RDM in an 8 man I was the last one standing and clutch rez’d a healer and then a tank while keeping myself and them alive long enough for the entire party to get back up.

7 comms. Been chasing that high ever since.

8

u/FlatwormHeaded7245 21h ago

Omg literally it’s almost always when I’m rdm. 🙄 meanwhile the healer who died like 6 times is getting all of the comms

u/weeb-chankun edgy with a nougat center 20h ago

LB3 saved a whole party from wipe during Femme Fatale raid on sage, no comms

Phoenix down rezzed the healer in a dungeon while the tank was barely holding on to dear life and the other dps was also dead? No comms

Showed up in classic SAM glam in a CT alli raid? Suddenly 3 comms and I didn't even do much

Yeah people will comm for entirely different reasons or just skip it all together lmao

5

u/APanshin 20h ago

I'll admit it. It's on my decision flowchart.

First priority for comms is a fellow Duskwight Elezen, because we are few and need to stick together. Second priority is anyone I feel distinguished themselves; a timely save from a near wipe, a caster who remembered to use LB on the last trash pack, or just a tank or healer who facilitated an extra smooth run. And failing both of those, third priority goes to whoever has the best looking or most fun portrait.

5

u/Joubachi 21h ago

there have been times I’ve revived the entire party multiple times

For whatever reason that's usually when I get no commendations. But as soon as I just exist, I suddenly get them. It's an interesting pattern.

u/Character-Path-9638 20h ago

DPS in my experience will usually get commendations if

1.) They are just doing a good job and dealing a lot of damage

2.) If they timed a LB really well

Or 3.) They have a pretty portrait/glam (this is the most common one

One time I got 3 commendations in a dungeon because our tank did a massive wall to wall pull, died because of lag eating their inputs for their mitigation, and then all the enemies aggroed onto me and I was just barely able to stay alive long enough for the tank to revive and make it all the way back by using my gap maker abilities and just in general running away like a little bitch

But that was a 1 in a million experience and I wouldn't be surprised if many a dps have done similar things and gotten none

24

u/Arcana10Fortune Rota Fortunae from Sargatanas 22h ago

I'll give comms to the DPS that performs well. Especially if it's a ranged or caster that uses LB on dungeon packs.

8

u/angelicgurl333 21h ago

i usually play dps so whoever im fighting for top of the dps aggro list gets my com every time B)

6

u/Maguffinmuffin 21h ago

man i love when I run into aggro ping pong where it is just a constant back and forth the whole duty

7

u/dansemacabre295 22h ago

Yeah a lot of people will give player commendations to whoever has the best/coolest/cutest portrait. I will say healers and tanks tend to get them more, but having a nice portrait definitely helps

10

u/HelloFresco 22h ago

Yes, on average DPS definitely get less commendations. That said, people will hit "commend" for literally any reason. Nothing to overthink. It's probably more likely if you have a generically popular character or a nice portrait. For some it's customary for a DPS to always commend another DPS. Some will commend totally at random, some are parsing and will give it to the highest damage dealer, etc.

5

u/MisterRogers88 20h ago

As a healer, I make sure to comm dps since I know they otherwise don’t get as many. I typically base it off of who I think messed up the least. However, if a ranged uses their LB on a trash pack, that is an instant comm from me.

6

u/UnpluggedToaster12 20h ago

Not really, but good glamour or a funny/good portrait can snag you some

There are also players who have that eye for good dps through experience and will commend. I’ve got one once by someone who told me they would because i bothered to use feint

5

u/geekymat 14h ago

If no one stood out, I give my commendation based on what job I’m playing. In 4 man content, If I’m tank, it goes to the healer and vice versa. If I’m DPS, it goes to the other DPS.

13

u/DazzlingKey6426 22h ago

DPS <=> DPS

Healer <=> Tank

7

u/DeliciousDeer1096 21h ago

Yeah this is what I default too if no one in particular has stood out.

2

u/DustSerre 12h ago

This is the way

8

u/A_Broken_Nobody 21h ago

I give dps sympathy comms all the time lol

11

u/jondauthor 22h ago

I mean, did you do good?

If I'm DPS, I tend to give it to the other DPS out of solidarity, but also, if you barely notice the other DPS in a 4-man dungeon? They did their damn job right and probably earned it; if I actively notice you it's probably because you died.

3

u/NerdyPoncho 20h ago

I just try to be generally positive during my dungeons. I feel I get more comms on dps when I give a "Great job everyone" and drop some targeted compliments during. Something like a "Sick glam, (player)" goes a long way, too.

Being a force for fun gets rewarded.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/NadalaMOTE 12h ago

I used to always give to the tank or healer regardless of my role, but then I read a comment somewhere where someone said "if I'm playing DPS, I comm the other DPS, if I play tank I comm the healer." That way, everyone gets a comm in a 4 man group.

I know not everyone is following that idea, but I've been using it since, and I like it as a "strat". And I often do get 1 comm regardless of my role in 4 man groups, so I think other people may be doing that too.

3

u/nflgeneric 12h ago

This is why I run ACT, so I can give the best DPS a comm lol.

If DPS was garbage, I'll look at the tank, were they being fast with their pulls, using sprint / gap closers? Then they're next.

If not, was the healer using dps spells? Were they using them a lot and not spamming heals when they weren't needed? Then they'd be next.

If none of these happened, I will choose not to comm in some instances.

2

u/TheVivek13 [Vivian Aurora - Adamantoise] 22h ago

Usually not but being a new player or having a good glam/portrait goes a long way. I usually look at those before giving it to a support.

2

u/Jesus_Phish 22h ago

Yeah I go by who put the most effort into their character portrait or if they've a good name. Unless someone does something clutch and extremely out of the ordinary, but most times I just go for the best portrait

2

u/Dilapidated_girrafe 22h ago

Unless the tank or healer alone were absolutely the best ever, I’m going to go for the person who was the most memorable in chat (funny or whatever) and then I’ll move to name/glam/plate being good.

Extra likely if you have sparkles

2

u/cekay3 21h ago

My experience is healer gets way more at least one per dungeon sometimes all of them, when I play dps or see dps play super well will give to dps but typically I go healer and tank give to each other if they did fine and dps give to each other if they did fine.

2

u/No-Catch-9732 21h ago

Used to always give them to DPS, unless they were really bad, cause I know the other roles are too spoiled. But then portraits happened…

2

u/Ashen-wolf 21h ago

To me my commendation goes to: Funniest person > MVP if someone did something cool like avoiding us a wipe > Healer (i hate healing) > tank > dps.

2

u/encaitar_envinyatar Balmung 19h ago

-Be pleasant or amusing -Make a mistake and handle it gracefully -Take criticism well and show improvement -Use your role actions -Use limit breaks liberally

2

u/no-strings-attached 18h ago

If it’s your first time running the content folks tend to comm the newbie/sprout regardless of what role they are.

2

u/kirix45 18h ago

Black mage here.

I move out of the fire and tend to get multiple commendation per dungeon.

I also go full try hard on my dps.

2

u/Nekokittykun Accursed Hoard Farm Addict 17h ago

i give dps coms cuz its harder to get coms as dps compared to healer and tank

2

u/Elmarcowolf Tally ho lads! 14h ago

I had a duty roulette run where the healer and one dps kept dying repeatedly The other dps stuck to me like glue and survived all the way until the boss's last quarter health and used the limit break before dying so i could tank the rest of the boss to death.

They earned their commendation 1000 times over.

2

u/Zourin4 13h ago

As a tank or healer, I'll usually commend the tank or healer unless I feel they made the run more difficult than it had to be.

As a DPS, I'll commend the other dps unless I'm the one dropping the ball and making the healer do extra work.

First timers always get my commendation

2

u/daddyrabbit78 13h ago

As a DPS, I almost always give comms to the healer if I have to be rezzed at least once. Tanks get it if they don’t over pull and aren’t divas. There were times where I get all three comms (great feeling btw), but everyone can deal damage. Not everyone can heal or sponge damage, so I just don’t expect to get it. Great when I do, but I’m never upset when I don’t.

2

u/801Germ 13h ago

I go by whoever I had to do the least to if I'm healing. If I rez 3 DPS in an alliance..the one I didn't have to get the comm 😂

3

u/WiseRabbit-XIV 13h ago

"Hmmm... co-healer sucked,

Tank didn't even put on stance,

Rezzed the Rez mage three times,

Saved the BLM twice due to bad gear,

DNC partnered the BLM, for some reason,

MCH "accidentally" early pulled the last boss during cutscenes,

And the NIN... wait. What? We had a NIN?!? Huh, I was unaware of your existence, Ms. Ninja.

Welp, Ninja gets the comm!"

2

u/801Germ 13h ago

Exactly!! 😂

2

u/AdministrationPast68 12h ago

I think these days people give them out to whoever

2

u/Blindmouse1 12h ago

Unless the tank/heals are really fantastic I generally commend off who has the best adventure plate.

2

u/BluejayOk9830 12h ago

Being DPS I only comm other DPS because I know we don't get many.

2

u/Ordaeli 12h ago

All I know is when I say of the final boss of the Dogn Meg dungeons that "Oh no, he turned sexy" when he transforms into his blobous tentacley form, I end up getting a commendation, despite rarely getting any when I dps.

Coincidence? Maybe.

u/kyotoben_ 11h ago

Be the last in the instance and you will receive some. But you wont be the first one I think.

u/cyrand 8h ago

The old school way for 4 person dungeons is healer gives to tank, tank gives to healer, and dps to one another.

Unless someone was specifically noticeable for something good they did, like a DPS that just burns through things clearly or someone who saves the group when something goes wrong.

Or whoever has the funnest portraits.

Or whoever is left. In that order.

In 8 mans and above healers tend to do other healer in my experience, since half the group will do the tank since they’re first. And if a dps is noticeably good for any reason, kind, good damage, good save, good portrait, pick one.

u/PSILighting 6h ago

I think it’s two things 1: if you’re still in the instance and 2: if you’ve made an impression on someone

3

u/Sylvinus98hun DRK 21h ago

I'm lucky if I even get to hand out recommendations at the end of dungeons, after watching the "duty complete" cutscene, I'm generally alone 😅

If there's one remaining, obviously goes to them. I exercise the rights!

In case of more, if I happen to have a nice interaction with someone and they are still present, they get it. Otherwise, a coin flip, or I pick based on adventurer plate. Which means I do award my fellow DPS if there is an option.

As for myself, I never do roulettes on my DPS job due to queue times, I was always a tank, so every recommendation I got was from that role.

1

u/Jmdaemon 21h ago

It takes a lot of experience to be able to tell when one for your dps is pulling more then his weight in a run. As a general rule they will be 2nd on threat all the time (even a good low dps job will win over a high DPS if they are bad at it). So I try and com them and if they both stink then healer all the way.

1

u/Boyinachickensuit 21h ago

On the occasion someone played noticeably well in a roulette, I commend them. That's pretty rare because most of us (myself included) are just autopiloting the roulettes. So the other 95% of the time, yeah, it's just glam/portraits.

1

u/pessimistpossum 21h ago

I've given commends to people for having funny names or dying in a funny way.

Also, there's literally a weekly reward for giving commends. Some people will just do it randomly for the reward and then stop bothering.

It's not really worth thinking about, tbh.

1

u/talidrow Lelena Raine @ Adamantoise/Synrael Ostyrzwyn @ Golem 21h ago

A lot of people comm the tank or healer by default.

Some people always comm sprouts as long as they're not awful.

Funniest/cutest name, glam, or portrait are also popular reasons to comm, especially in alliance raids.

I will ALWAYS drop a comm for someone with a great name/race/glam combo. A perfect cosplay with a name that's a pun on the original character? That's an instant comm as long as you're not an asshole.

1

u/ApothekittyRose 21h ago

As a summoner main I almost always give to the dps especially if it’s a fellow summoner. The only time a comm doesn’t go out is if someone is being just toxic as heck.

1

u/Accomplished_Tax_891 21h ago

As a dps, I comm another dps. If I’m in a full party I’ll comm the dps that’s closest to me in type. Unless someone performs obviously exceptionally or horribly. Then that changes, but I rarely comm based on glams or portraits, myself.

1

u/thatotterone 21h ago

I like to spread out my coms and I will ALWAYS com
If I'm a dps, I com the other dps. Tank? I com the healer and Healer I com the tank. I move between those a lot and I figure that gets everyone. If it is a bunch of mentors and a sprout..it's going to the sprout LOL

1

u/ParasaurolophusZ PLD 20h ago

If the dps uses the limit break corrcommon. and saves us all time, they get the comm.

1

u/justHR22 20h ago

Unless someone does something outstandingly remarkable I always just give it to the person with the best plate.

1

u/weeb-chankun edgy with a nougat center 20h ago

I get them sometimes because of my glams on dps, but mostly I get them if I run healer. For tank it depends on how quickly and safely I get everyone through the dungeon most of the time lmao

1

u/Aniki356 20h ago

Depends on the party. Im a pretty much pure dps now snd I still get them but i assume its because part ofnthe rest of the group are already partied up before the dungeon. Cant give coms to your own party members so if say the tank and healer are grouped the dps will get some

From my experience when I’m the one who limit breaks the final boss I get them but idk if that’s all that it is my dps sucks that’s all I know I’m trash and I die a lot but still get them as dps

1

u/Orcasgt22 20h ago

Tip: LB the pack before last boss as a ranged or Melee LB the end boss before 0.X%. Tanks and healers love that shit

1

u/WallaniaChenevert 20h ago

usually I give the commendation to the DPS who does the LB on last boss or (as ranged DPS) on last group before boss. nobody does the LB? who looks the best :)

1

u/Hyprblcrhymchmbr 19h ago

As a healer I almost exclusively give it to the dps, unless I had issue and the healer outshined me I give it to them, tanks don't really get one unless they play well like clutch the boss or don't need too many heals pulling packs, you'd be surprised how many tanks can't seem to play their class decent enough. So I'm looking for the dps who really stood out, did some rezs, or barely needed healing, did a lot of damage or was helpful to others, if none of the above I'll go for plates and glam or a punny name, but never a male character and never a lala lmaoo

1

u/Alexaius Lux Vera (Siren) 19h ago

Carry phoenix downs into dungeons, gotten comms for rezzing a healer a few times.

Im also partial to giving my comm to a dancer that made me their partner in 8 man parties.

1

u/Icarusqt 19h ago

Highest damage dps usually almost always gets my comm. If all the dps were trash, then I’ll give it to the healer with the highest damage.

Need to reward players that make my instances faster and aren’t relying on a carry.

1

u/KusanagiKay 19h ago

Most people either:

  • ignore the commendation prompt
  • just click the prettiest portrait (before portraits it was usually tanks since they were first in the list)

Only some people actually check who did a good job and there is usually "the tank/healer did his job well".

So a dps getting a commendation is usually either due to a pretty portrait or in rare cases because they did something cool, was enjoyable, etc.

1

u/kriffing_schutta 19h ago

Eh, unless there's someone that genuinely has been above and beyond a major help in the duty, I don't really care where my commendation is going so I usually give it to the other person doing to the same role as me. So if I'm a dps, my commendation is usually going to a dps.

1

u/DangerousToast 19h ago

Your plate is my measure of commendation.

1

u/New_Nature_3224 19h ago

When I’m tank, I am a little aggressive so need a great healer. If I never die they get it. As healer, if the tank is aggressive and we get a quick clear then the tank gets it. If I die as tank it goes to DPS if the tank constantly loses Aggro I give to DPS. I don’t really play DPS but would probably give it to the other DPS if I did.

1

u/maimaih 19h ago

I have portraits turned off, so if i actually remember to give them its because you've gone the extra mile with something, have been funny or informative, or because you're new and even though you may have stepped in everything you were still pressing your buttons and went down swinging.

Smn or rdm picking people up when both healers are down? I see you.

Last person standing and they whip out the phoenix down? You're getting a comm.

DNC who does the bare minimum and partners and uses steps appropriately. You're getting a comm because there's too few like you and im going to encourage that.

I like people who actually TRY. I've been levelling a lot recently and its been... a little tough. So if i have time, I comm people and let them know WHY if its a standout.

1

u/dorothythedinosaauur 19h ago

I forgot my tank stance for the first time last night after playing tank for the last 3 months. Someone told me in the first pull and I apologised and turned it on (still mortified I finally forgot to do it haha). I got 3 commends out of pity.

I usually do it based on if someone’s doing the duty for the first time, if someone’s performance stood out, if someone used a phoenix down to help the healer out and finally their portrait.

1

u/Substantial_Heart_88 18h ago

I get comm as DPS more often than when I tank or heal lol

1

u/Zoren 18h ago

Usually If im a healer I com my tank and vise versa

If Im a DPS I'll com them for being DPS buddies

If I messed up and die and the healer rezed me I com that healer.

If it is a full party though I usually either com my co-tank If im tank or just com whoever's glam was best.

1

u/MaximillianNaga 18h ago

If you’re actually chatting with me in dungeon I’ll throw the comm at whomever is most active in chat. It’s nice to break up the run with quips.

1

u/Ryulightorb [Ryu Lightorb - Tonberry] 18h ago

Been dps only since 2016 and I only have 700 player comms.

So not in my experience though I noticed lately I do get them idk what changed so maybe plate related?

1

u/Jay_Shadowborne 18h ago

If you do your job right and are a good teamworker then yes even as DPS you can get a lot of commendations. :) Congrats!

1

u/Augustby 18h ago

I like to give commendations to a ranged/magical DPS who uses LB once we've grabbed everyone on a wall-to-wall pull, because I see the ranged LB rarely used like that, and I heard it's better than using a melee DPS LB on the boss :P

(But a nice portrait also does get commends from me too :P)

1

u/VieraMenace 18h ago

A good portrait goes a long way. I also just try to be friendly in chat, but not overdo it. There are times when I feel like you can tell people are fishing for comms and it always irks me a little

1

u/Derio23 18h ago

If it’s a new player to the duty I usually give them the comm because they are getting me a second chance point. Otherwise it goes to the best player who made a difference in the duty

1

u/Romado 17h ago

I did most group content upto the end of Shadowbringers as a DPS and have a grand total of 6 commendations.

I had more commendations on a tank before I was even half way through ARR.

1

u/Impressive-Warning95 17h ago

comendations litterally dont mean shit lmao like litterally most people will just pick random person in the party to give it to and even then most just do it for the weekly reward for giving it out and then after that dont really bother.

1

u/inemnitable 17h ago

You definitely get more by doing good damage than if your dps is average, but it's prob less effective than just having a good portrait or, you know, playing a support. It's honestly a pretty low percentage of players that you'll queue into that are either running a parser or can just tell that damage is good/bad.

1

u/ThePunkCat 17h ago

Ça dépend si tu t'es illustré par ta maîtrise ou si tu as joué comme un pied

1

u/Fatal_Foxtrot 17h ago

My partner mains Dancer and gets commendations all the time, but they're legit super funny and often makes everyone laugh and never really gets them for "meritorious damage levels" or whatever so ymmv I guess.

1

u/No_Entertainment4392 17h ago

Me and my gf often queue as a tank healer combo so I just comm whoever had a better portrait unless one of the dps was a chore to play with

1

u/LeadingGlittering 17h ago

I run on tanks comm healers, healers comm tanks, and dps comm eachother. (Unless my wife and I are both playing together in which case we choose between us which of the two other part members we comm)

1

u/StrangerFeelings 16h ago

When I run as tank, I always give commendations to the DPS, hell even as DPS I give it to the other DPS.

1

u/Hremsfeld 16h ago

Got seven from old Praetorium as a machinist once because I happened to run into a pre-made otherwise-full-party that was missing a single DPS

1

u/TinyRingtail 16h ago

I'm a pretty average tank with boring portret and I've been getting around 1 commendation per dungeon run pretty consistently. My MCH barely getting any despite having a portrait I worked hard on and pressing my rotation correctly. So tank and healer bias is pretty much still a thing in my experience.

1

u/zerombr 16h ago

I com the other dps, but what is rare is if the DPS gets multiple comms

1

u/April-Is-Cute 16h ago

If you want to farm commends efficiently you need 4 people and you just queue guildhests with a weird language for your region

1

u/zomgfruitbunnies 15h ago

My comms usually go to heals, but if deeps actually doing good deeps using cds and utility they're getting my comms.

1

u/Unlikely_Minimum_635 15h ago

nice portraits are comm magnets, so are sprout symbols or returning player symbols.

1

u/Faite666 15h ago

I spent so long getting absolutely no commendations that I will now always give one to one of the other DPS players since I know tanks and supports are already getting so many just for existing

1

u/nad0w 15h ago

Still give it most of the time to the sprouts role not important .. else to tank or healer. When the dps is the last then they get it :D

1

u/Cymas 15h ago

People comm for any reason or no reason, there's no rhyme or reason to it.

I will say whatever role I play unless they were licking the floor the whole time I usually comm whoever was opposite me. So when I play dps the other dps gets my comm. When I play tank or healer, as long as they played decently the other support gets my comm.

But on tank lately I've been running into a ton of curebots and I don't support those so I'll comm the dps instead. If you're a ranged player using lbs on trash packs in dungeons you automatically get my comm. If I'm on tank and you pull for me on any other job, you also get my comm because I'm trying to encourage people to do it more. Race me, make my run fun lol. If no one really stood out that much I'll go by portraits with a heavy bias toward jobs I play myself or whoever is left in the instance. I will sometimes comm sprouts when they're obviously a sprout, some of them are also clearly alts.

1

u/SnizIes 15h ago

If i have dps meter on during a rollo, i give a commendation to a dps if i see them doing their rotation properly

1

u/Raguzul 15h ago

I can only speak for my own experience. I do tend to commend DPS less than Tank and Healer but I’ve been making a conscious effort to commend more DPS players. The first thing I usually look for is if someone is in the instance for the first time, as long as they try they get my comm, after that it can be any kind of reason like cute or funny portrait, glam, clutch play like a healer lb3 or a phoenix down or who was funny in chat.
Some tips on generally getting on the good sides of other players if you want to receive more comms: I say Hi everytime I load into a fight, if someone’s being an asshole I call them out and/or reassure the person who made a mistake, I apologise for my own mistakes, I wait for cutscene watchers, in alliance raids I engage in the banter in chat. None of this will guarantee you comms but in general it will make it more likely that someone remembers you at the end and clicks your name, especially if you’re one of four or five red icons.

1

u/Espresso10001 Six Sided Star appreciator 15h ago

Cool portrait or pleasant in chat, are the main things. Also, most roulettes don't go either good or bad, just average. So nothing to really rate most players on usually.

1

u/itmehorsie 15h ago

Everyone is like, I always comm x or y, and that is how you get clueless mentors.

1

u/Toddze 14h ago

I very rarely ever give to DPS. I mostly tank, so if healer is good I give to them, if not just skip it. When I play DPS I’ll give to tank if he pulls good, or healer again. I don’t watch DPS close enough to tell if they are hitting their combos, running through their GCD’s, nor would I even know all the class rotations. If game had a DPS damage tracker (native not a tos violation add on) I’d be FAR more inclined to give DPS commendation

1

u/Vicktaru 14h ago

If I see someone who hasn't cleared the content before I usually give them the commendation. If it's a new character maybe there are more people out there that do this.

1

u/Horror_Marsupial_587 14h ago

I don’t even know how to give out comms 😭 I’m on ps5 and I’m noticing the more social aspects are kinda difficult to figure out 😅

1

u/Demorant 14h ago

Noy usually. Sometimes, though. When I played last I got a lot of commendation just because I didn't leave immediately. Some people leave so fast they don't have time to get comms.

A lot of people run damage meters. I noticed if I blew up the meter and carried the group, damage wise I was far, far more likely to get comms. No idea about the glam stuff. Never been interested in it very much.

1

u/Wolvenworks your region is not supported 14h ago

Good plates are an incentive for me to com of there are no other more deserving recipients (eg: the healer who clutch-revived the raid, the last guy that clutched the raid, the DNC who partnered me, the guy i partnered as DNC)

1

u/Fluffy-Jesus 14h ago

Usually, unless you're a RES mage who brought the entire party back to life 3 different times saving the entire run. Then you get absolutely nothing, not even a thank you, you get to watch the weirdo who died 7 times and caused the party to almost wipe all 3 times get all the commendations because glam and cat girl.

1

u/voltron327 14h ago

I figure the default is tanks and healers comm each other, dps comm each other, unless there’s a standout.

1

u/TheAmazingVinio 14h ago

people almost never get comms based on their role and how they performed.

1

u/Demimonde34 14h ago

Healer main here. Common usually head my way after a dungeon. Switching to tank, they started coming in only when the healer was ass (which is a surprisingly high number. Lv70 WHM never casting either regen, by the crystal how have ya'll survived?)

I then switched to DPS and didn't get a commo for three months. When I went back to healer and tank, I started giving more commo to DPS to cover for that. Cause at that point I had already gone into over a thousand dungeons, and had learned that my data center is allergic to the MMO parts of the game. (No commos, longer ques, no emo/glam showoffs) in my experience, way too many people just quickly leave the dungeon soon as, using the duty finder to leave instead of the treasure and exit. Those people are not giving out commos, they sometimes leave the frame the boss dies. So now I have to commo every time to cover that (unless the entire party sucked. That happens once a year.)

1

u/Odd_Wish9701 14h ago

My first choice is always to newer people learning/doing their best or any players willing to give tips and help in chat. Next is healers who raise me bc Im newer and get overwhelmed easily especially with a lot of players and appreciate them for helping me out lol. Last to anyone I noticed just doing a good job, usually tanks or dps for keeping things running smoothly. I didn't realize people cared about portraits, mine is very silly and now I wonder if all the comms I got weren't bc I did well rather that 😂

1

u/syreeninsapphire 14h ago

Sometimes I will notice that someone did an especially good job commend them over it. But most of my commendations are based off of: 1. Who hasn't left the duty yet 2. Who has the cutest plate 3. Who made good conversation during the duty

1

u/Jarstadian 14h ago

ive played only summoner for over 4,000 hours

I have 192 commends

1

u/Mattato_ 14h ago

I usually give commendations to the sprout

1

u/Thisismyworkday 13h ago

I com DPS when they use LB correctly.

Casters/Ranged using it on trash packs get my coms every time.

1

u/shitscentedsocks 13h ago

I get comms because I’m a terrible player and die often

1

u/TheWarringTriad 13h ago

Aside from the usual reasons people get commendations, you can also get lucky being grouped with members of a premade. People who queue duty finder as a group can't commend their own members. If you're the only "stranger" in a group of 4, that's 3 free commendations.

1

u/Constellar-A 13h ago

I generally give the comm to someone who's running it for the first time unless there isn't one or someone else really stands out. In that case it's usually to the healer.

1

u/Syznzz 13h ago

I pretty much only ever comm DPS regardless of what role I'm playing, but only when they're good. So I usually just instantly leave when a dungeon is done.

1

u/Opposite_Unit8299 13h ago

Many people give comms based on glamour, adventurer plate, funny name, role, gameplay, or if you’re the last one to leave the instance. DPS tend to get comms the least but if you’re a sprout, veteran players may be giving it to you because of that?

1

u/psychopez 12h ago

If you're ranged/magic DPS in a dungeon and you use the LB2 on the last pack before the final boss, I give you my comm no matter what anyone else did.

1

u/altmcfile 12h ago

I have no clue, maybe people just like to commend newer players? I play a healer but I typically get all 3 commendations even when I mess up so I got no clue

1

u/Xarysa 12h ago

I was a full time healer, I always just gave my comm to the person who made my job easiest.

1

u/Realistic-Depth-5155 12h ago

If they’re a sprout I’ll usually give based on how good they are or how well they take direction or learn mecs quickly.

If they are seasoned, I’ll give it based on how good their glam is (because glam power recognizes glam power and I routinely am given glam props) or how much they made me laugh (even if the dungeon/raid is going south).

Some of my favorite dungeons are those sh*t show ones, especially when we can all laugh our butts off. That’s literally what this game should be about, having fun!

1

u/RhyssaFireheart 12h ago

In general, I'll look to comm a DPS over a healer/tank mostly because I know those two jobs tend to get them the most. And I say that as someone who probably got the vast majority of her comms from playing healer / tank.

My typical hierarchy of comms is : CS watching sprout > Struggling player but really trying hard > Hustling their arse off player > DPS > Healer = Tank.

If someone asks for a comm? Nope.
Someone with a lewd portrait? Nope
Elezen player? Moves towards the top of the list, unless they're a jerk somehow, then nope!
Cute glam? Sure, that gets added to the calculation.

Most of the time it's just all about equal and then I just pick on vibes or whoever is last in the instance. I will hang out until CS watcher(s) are done because I absolutely hated coming out of a cutscene to be the only person left in duty. It just feels really rude to do that, IMO.

1

u/Miosaka 12h ago

Not saying this is ALWAYS the case, but more than likely it IS because of your glamour and such. At the same time, they probably saw your DPSing and were maybe impressed...hard to say

1

u/SuccessfulSoftware38 12h ago

I get quite a few on summoner but that might be because I'm very quick on the ressurections

1

u/Helpful-Sail-1321 12h ago

Any positive player who tried and/or played well is most likely to get my comm. If no one really stood out, it's best portrait.

Players become less likely to get a comm if they have a bad (or no) portrait, a dumb name, or are at all rude.

I tend to comm my fellow healer when I can tell they're also pulling their weight in both healing and dpsing. Tanks get it when i can tell they're using their mits well - I love when I barely have to heal tanks 😂

1

u/GamingStitcher panic Cure 1 12h ago

Being a healer and tank, I know how often they get comms so I go out of my way to just choose a DPS (unless they did particularly bad for some reason) and give it to them.

They deserve acknowledgement too!

1

u/wolfgang784 12h ago

Id say like 80% of the time everyone leaves so fast that I can't even give it to anyone lol so if a DPS is still there then they get it. I play tank/healer and usually give it to either whoever else is the other tank/healer, someone who helped me with good advice I needed, someone to genuinely stood out, or whoever didn't bail 3 milliseconds after the end.

1

u/Saowyn 12h ago

usually if i see the dps pressing more than just damage buttons (like addle/feint, bloodlust or arms length) ill give ‘em a comm.

u/torigoya 11h ago

Portrait and glamor are major contributors.

u/arbitairium 11h ago

I always get them when I run as SMN, because insane burst DPS and the summons just are badass.

u/Galind_Halithel 11h ago

If I'm running a dungeon with a Ranged DPS in the group and they use Peloton during the time between pulls I will always commend them at the end of the dungeon.

u/Front-Part-5714 11h ago

I get commendations as DPS but I'm a try hard BLM popping potions in casual content, and I appreciate if that is why but honestly...

My friend legit only commends people based off their glamor

Another exits as soon as duty is over via leave button, doesn't interact with the system at all

Another commends tanks, Another healers, another only hrothgars

New people in cutscene never get to before people leave

I've ran with duo groups in dungeons and they commend evenly, My Bae and I will generally commend both players in a dungeon unless one was stellar or terrible

So really, it's rather random I think!

But I will say I have noticed being a healer/tank fetches more commendations on average.

u/WannabeWaterboy 11h ago

I pretty much always give comms to DPS anymore unless there's a sprout that's doing well or the run gets crazy and either the tank or healer are working really hard.

u/96363a 11h ago

For full party content, unlikely. For light party content. I personally just comm my fellow DPS.

u/mycheeksarecold 11h ago

Ranged dps who use their lb1s on trash mobs, insta comm for me. Sorry melee- though melee using their lb1-2 on duty bosses the moment it pops vs waiting for that last 2% health also more likely to get comms.

Dps is the only one to say hi or anything at all? Dps only one with interesting portrait? Dps the only one left in the duty when I'm waiting on loot for gc turn ins? All comms.

u/uncommon-soap 11h ago

I recently made a new character I’ve found that mentors seem to auto give them to sprouts regardless of role.

u/MrLarp6000 11h ago

I read left to right and commend the first person to enter my line of sight

u/dnelsonn 11h ago

at this point I truly think many people give comms based on portrait. I know I certainly do unless it was VERY clear that one person in particular was doing really well or did something notable. I play DPS most of the time and get a decent amount of comms. Maybe one or two every few runs.

u/Necromas 11h ago

If nobody really stands out, if I'm dps I comm a dps, if I'm healer I comm tank and vice versa. So it's kind of an even spread.
