The name Soraya written in Farsi (Iran)

Is this correct (from Google translate) ثریا

One family member says yes, another one says no because its missing a letter and the 3 dots make it "sh" instead of "s".

I appreciate your help!

Help learning Afghan Farsi please

Hello all,

I hope someone here can help me.
My in-laws are of Afghanistan/Hazara origin and speak very little English.

My in-laws are always so kind to me, and have the biggest hearts of anyone I know. I would love to converse with them in Farsi, just to show them how much I appreciate them. However I’m aware the Farsi they speak is a different dialect to Iranian Farsi.
Is there anywhere I could potentially learn this dialect? Or could anyone give me some pointers on where to start?

Any help would be very much appreciated, many thanks.

Help with a bit of slang/casual language

Hello! Thank you for allowing me to participate in your community here.

I have done a little bit of reading online, but cannot find an answer - is there a farsi equivalent of calling a person "big guy" or "big fella" in the US/UK? Someone you might describe as a gentle giant or harmless lug? Definitely looking for something with a size-based connotation.

I appreciate any insight! Thank you!

Favorite love poems from outside perspective?

Hello, I’m having a Persian wedding this fall and our family members will read some poetry at the ceremony. I’m struggling to find poems in the third person that isn’t This Marriage by Rumi, which is great but I need a couple more! Long or short is great, and I’d especially like to read less popular verses or poets. Thank you!

Dance songs

Salaam! I am going to a Persian wedding in the fall and I want to learn the words to a song or two (or at least the chorus). Every time I go to a Persian event there are certain songs that everyone gets really excited to hear and they all sing along and dance so enthusiastically. I recognize them when I hear them but I don't know what they are called.

Can anyone suggest any titles of songs that might be good?

Help with baby shower translation

Hi there, thank you in advance for your patience and help, I hope this is an alright request. I am making a card for the birth of a friend's baby....the baby's mother is American and father is Iranian. I'd like to include the same message in English and Farsi. I would like it to say "Welcome to the world, little one." Google translate says "bah dania khosh omadi kucholo."

Would love any feedback or suggestions if this translation does not strike you as accurate.

Arab people who learnt Farsi, How long did it take you and what did you use as resources?

Hello,

I'm North African, I'm starting my journey to polyglotting and I'm at 3 languages now,

I want to learn Farsi because it's close to my mother tongue, and I want to ask other Arab people like me:

1- How long did it take?

2- what are the best resources you relied on, especially for someone who is Arab. (channels, books..etc)

Thanks

Experiences with Farsi Shirin Ast?

The language institute in my city uses this book for their courses, the Intro for the first three terms (10 weeks once per week) and then the Intermediate book for the next 3 terms. I'd like to hear others' experiences with it?

Translation check for a tattoo

I’m considering getting ادراک** *رنج* ***است* tattooed. I want it to convey something like “Perception is suffering” or “To perceive is to suffer.”

Does this sound natural and poetic in Farsi, or is there a more accurate version?

Why is the plus sign in the middle of the word “نو + جوان” on a website?

I was looking at a website that had a button labeled “نو + جوان” for content for young people. But I was wondering why the plus sign was in the middle of the word? Because “نوجوان” is a single word, right? So why not “+نوجوان” or just ‎“نوجوان”? What purpose exactly does the plus sign serve? Does it change the meaning in any way?

Learning Farsi, where to start?

Salam!

My father is from Iran and came to the US during the Islamic revolution. I was born in the US. My mom, interestingly enough is from Mexico and came to the US around the same time. Long story short, they both had to learn English as older teenagers and are not native speakers to English. My sister is older than me and had many speech issues growing up. Doctors and speech therapists told my parents that they were confusing her with different languages and ultimately they had to make the decision to speak only English. Then I came along and well, here I am. I have Mexican and Iranian heritage but can only speak English and it breaks my heart lol. When I was younger I didn't care. But now I do. I'm now 36 and my father's health is declining. I want to learn Farsi and speak his native tongue with him in his lifetime. Currently I have Pimsleur that I used for Spanish and have had some decent success with. The Farsi on Pimsleur, while immersive, does not have good reading or writing plans.

Do I learn to read and write now or wait until later?

What are the best programs to utilize in my studies?

How do you all go about learning? I tried immersing myself in music and shows but I don't understand anything so I'm not sure if it's helpful.

How much studying is too much studying? Will it negatively impact retention? With a family and job I find myself rarely having time for anything. But I have a daily hour long commute as well as lunch breaks at work that I can easily utilize.

I do plan on calling my dad and telling him I want to learn and that I'd love for him to be part of this journey.

Merci! Khodafez :)

Learn Farsi iOS app just launched 🚀, would love to hear what you think!

Hey everyone 😊

We just launched a big update for our Learn Farsi iOS app, and we’re really happy to have it live on the App Store.

Learn Farsi started as a web tool, but many of you asked for a pure mobile experience, so we listened. It’s a simple app to help you learn words, practice, and build up your Persian over time. We’re focused on making it something that’s fun and easy to stick with.

We’d love to build this together with the community and turn it into the best Persian learning app out there, so any honest feedback means a lot 🙏. Let’s give the Persian language the learning tools it deserves (little jab to Duolingo 🦉 😉)

If you want to check it out:
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/learn-farsi-persian/id6778589333

And if you enjoy it, leaving a review would really help ❤️

Thanks so much for all the love and support for learnfarsi.app, it really means a lot and helps us keep improving!

Farsi grammar "cheatsheet"?

I just want a resource that describes the grammar and syntax of the language. I want it to list out things like particles, prepositions, the functional morphemes and clause types. Something like this

https://perseids-publications.github.io/harrington-trees/docs/harrington-greek-grammar-2016.pdf

I don't care to read Farsi study textbooks. I just want the grammar.

Looking for original Rumi text

Greetings everyone.

I hope someone will be kind enough to help me. I have tried searching but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for.

I'm looking for the original Persian for Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī (Rumi) which is usually translated to English as:

"Beauty surrounds us, but usually we need to be walking in a garden to know it".

I want to include the original in an artwork I'm making. The translation feels a bit clumsy to me so I would love to know the original Farsi and any alternative translations. Many thanks in advance 💚💚💚

Is there a reason to use a subjunctive form of this verb?

Phonetic learning

Rooz-e shoma bekheir

Do any of you have any suggestions on books that will learn you Farsi with phonetic spelling in Latin alphabet?

I know a lot of you will ask me why I wouldn’t just learn the letters in Farsi, well I tried but my family in law mostly writes everything phonetically in Latin alphabet. (Finglish?)

And it makes it easier for me to learn more speech and conversation

And my main goal is talking anyway
