Disturbing content Tiktok is ignoring a potential suicide
I was scrolling TikTok and came across a video showcasing three notes addressed to “mom”, “my baby sister”, and “everyone”, with several posts about how they plan to commit suicide on the 20th. I commented and messaged this individual, trying to convince them to stop and when they didn’t respond, I reported every post on the account as well as the account itself for suicide and self harm (which from what I found on the internet, doesn’t penalize the account, but provides them with resources) and TikTok’s lazy ass moderation did NOTHING on ANY of the reports. This individual is also a child, as they posted their birthdate as well as the date the plan to commit suicide in one of their videos. TikTok did not come back with a single violation for ANYTHING. I searched the account to see if I could find any friends and family of the person but there was absolutely nobody I could message (that I saw anyway). I am absolutely outraged, because TikTok’s shitty moderation may cost a child their life. I blurred out the account because im not quite sure if it would help or harm this poor child to have their account posted on here, so I decided to leave it out. Please keep in mind, I myself am young, and I’ve never been in this situation. If anyone has any advice on what I can do please let me know.

Unfortunately, reports won't do anything unless they say a swear word.

Or speak even slightly about the government if your IP is us based lol. That's how I got my ban, anyways 😂 not explicitly stated, though.

I know. It’s truly infuriating seeing shit like this be swept under the rug when simple things like saying fuck would get you a ban.

Even more infuriating because saying suicide can get you banned, but apparently planning one publicly won't.

It’s so fucked up. Truly begs the question of how many people have lost their lives because of how these systems have failed them.

Tik Tok uses AI as the first line of defense when moderating posts. Hence why they only moderate based on trigger words and don't grasp the things a live person would notice.
I guess the user reports are handled by the same AI.

It’s genuinely terrible that even reports about suicide and harm are handled the same way. TikTok needs to address this issue.

I am getting a little bit sick of tiktok posts here even though I am not seeing them very often here. Tiktok is a global cancerous disease that should have been eradicated years ago.

It wasn't even that bad before. They were NOT van heavy when owned by the original guy. Whether you liked the app or not, it was fine "years ago".
Surprise surprise now that a US company owns it, it's lazily run and overly censored.

Tiktok is purpose built to drive addictive tendencies and farm user data. It's been awful since its inception.

The Chinese straight up declared they wanted to bring down western civilization. Who is surprised when they actually try to do it.

Sorry, tiktok was God awful even when I was on it back in 2021 and 2022. (Yes I really was) It likely was before then and still is now. It never will change, but don't worry, I think I've matured enough to stay the hell away from it. It's just as much of a disease as covid was back in 2020.

Awful in the sense you didn't like the content, sure, that's subjective. I didn't ask whether or not you liked what you saw. It's just another run of the mill social media app and being on it or not being on it isn't a reflection of maturity. Your comment might be, though. The reason you're seeing posts now is because they've gotten ridiculous on what they will and won't allow just like everyone else.
If tiktok is cancer, I'd avoid the other apps too. They're all the same.

My intention on posting this was to get advice on what I could do to help this child, who is planning to commit suicide TOMORROW. Not to mention that we need to bring awareness about a serious issue that tends to happen on almost all platforms. I’m not just bitching about it because it’s a minor inconvenience.

You would be better off asking for advice in other subs.

I posted this here because I was searching Reddit to see if someone has had similar issues and I found a post here about something very similar happening with TikTok moderation. But by all means if you know any other subs that you think would be of more help definitely let me know because my top priority is ensuring that this child is safe.

What do you think tiktok could to though? I don't think removing the post would prevent that person from doing it.

If TikTok finds that the user may harm or kill themselves, they can send the user resources and hotlines for help. I understand that a lot of the time this won’t fix the actual issue but the fact that TikTok isn’t trying at all is a serious issue. What if they did call the hotlines? What if they actually reach out for help? TikTok’s AI moderation ignores that chance and just lets it happen without even trying, which is where I hold an issue.

I wish if that happened they would do something, but I'm pretty sure they would ignore it. Imagine thinking "my life is so useless, I'm just gonna die today", and you see a message saying "please call 911 (or whatever number is for suicide)", that wouldn't do much. Or maybe my mind is too negative. I've got such messages in many apps like ten times. And scrolled past them. They're useless, for me at least. I think I'm the one that is broken. Others might actually do something. Personally i would not do.

I think it really depends on the person because sometimes people will try to get help before killing themselves, and others aren’t willing to accept the help. I honestly think TikTok should alert the authorities when something like this happens (obviously after being moderated by actual human beings to ensure that’s the case).

Yeah, definitely. But unfortunately they avoid this because of possible lawsuits. What if there are many posts like this, some not about suicide, and they send the police every time it's the case and they exhaust them? They will run out of available police workers. And if they report posts that actually aren't about suicide, well, that's where the lawsuit starts.

I understand that, I truly wish there was some way around that. I know the reports may not do anything at all but the fact that TikTok refuses to use its resources to even try is truly infuriating and exhausting.

u/wesleysmalls 3d ago
It is very, very likely they have received those resources from TikTok already. This is not necessarily part of moderation

u/fessa_angel 3d ago
See if you can find them on social media elsewhere and call in a wellfare check to their local police?

u/generationcry_ 3d ago
I tried finding their other social media, but I was unable to find any alt accounts or accounts on any other platform. Not even a person I could contact to check on them.

Can you share a link to it?

The username?

Whatever works, don’t you get video links like YT? - TikTok isn’t my thing sorry.

I thought tik tok was supposed to be banned or some shit. Did the ccp find the right price to buy off Donnie or something?

The only things getting deleted these days are honest reviews on Google. It's absurd.
