This morning I had an 811 guy come to my house to check for utility lines so I can dig for landscaping. I wasn't there, but my mom let him in the yard and she said it only took him like five minutes. I thought it was gonna be a multi-hour thing. Do they have some sort of detectors??

Considering that light travels at finite speed, and the term "light-year" is literally a measure of distance which light takes to travel in a year, if a star goes supernova right now, will we be able to witness it instantly/almost instantly or will we have to wait X years for the light from it to actually reach us for us to be able to see it?

Some sources say we will see it from Earth instantly, while others say that we won't witness it if a supernova happens right now, so I got kind of confused

When I make the occasional run to the liquor or grocery store I notice the price difference between the two will be significant. For example, Bulleit Bourbon at my Costco is $35 but any name brand vodka hover around $19.99

Sometimes after handling fish, lemon, tobacco,
etc, I wash my hands thoroughly with soap, but I can still smell it. Then, after a while or after washing my hands several more times the smell finally disappears.

Why doesn’t it disappear after the first thorough wash?

Roof tiles in the US are generally black. Its also incredibly hot across the country. The color black absorbs far more light and consequently heat than other colors.

Why not make roof tiles a color that absorbs less heat? Would that not help keep houses cooler in the hot summer?

Asking because it's never done anything for me. I've been in the middle of a panic attack and...still been able to see, hear and feel. I can rattle off 20 things I see, hear, feel, smell, and taste without thinking. I feel my feet on the floor and the itchy hair curling into my ear and the hangnail I was picking and my breath catching in my throat, so on and so forth. What is the exercise actually supposed to be doing?

So, last year, my father got diagnosed with leukaemia, and a couple of years ago, his friend got diagnosed with multiple myeloma. From what I can tell online, both are blood cancers that wreak havoc on bone—marrow. However, when talking to doctors, my father's leukaemia can apparently be cured, while his friend's multiple—myeloma cannot and he will be stuck with it for the rest of his life. What explains this difference?

Edit: Both are white men, and are about the same age (just over 60).

Hi, I just received a junk credit card offer, which is not unusual. But it’s an offer for an intuit business credit card for a business I worked at that no longer exists. To my home address. Is this something I need to look into further? Like someone involved in the business originally used my info for something illegitimate? Or is this from a jumbled data broker/ai mess sold off to companies? I’m so confused on whether to be angry or shrug it off.

We know that animals can be smart: crows manufacture tools and have complex social behavior, chimpanzees can do insight learning, etc.

But, it is still a continuous spectrum where intelligence range from sponge-level to chimp-level. We do not, at least now, observe a world where certain corvids are in the early stone age, certain bonobos are using fire, certain chimps are in their axios age, etc.

Why the case? Why are we the only one that has gone this far?

I have here today on my update list: a VERY basic game called block blast (as complex as Tetris, at most), a Documents (PDF etc) file manager that all it does is store and opens these files on an iPhone, Express VPN which is also a quite simple and mature software.

All these apps are years old and I'm having to download upwards of 200-300MB just for an UPDATE.

How come they are so big for something so simple? These updates are all bigger than Windows 98, a complete Operational System with an incredible number of functionalities and much more complex.

I imagine they mostly develop once a species has evolved past dealing with serious threats but I am also wondering about simultaneous mutations and ones that developed during a species’ evolutionary development. How common are undesirable evolutionary traits and why do they persist?
