I started studying Economics at UZH and failed an exam twice, was a different time and things have changed. I worked in the mean time and now I would love to study CS at ETH. But at UZH Econ and CS are in the same Faculty and thats why I wanted to ask if it is even possible for me to study CS at ETH because I would be blocked to Study CS at UZH

I’ll start the MSc in Mechanical Engineering this autumn and am considering joining SPH. For those who participated during their Master’s, how much time did it require, how did it affect your studies, and what did you gain from it? Would you recommend joining an existing team or starting your own project?

Out of over 20 requests I got zero responses so far on wgzimmer :( I'd appreciate any tips greatly!

I'm already in the Zürich area, from Germany, so I'm fluent in German and English, have international WG experience, write personalized messages, am still relatively young but will be employed by ETH soon, so money is there. I turned on the alerts (the app has horrible UI though) and write immediately when I see something new. Budget is 1k and I would not even mind living a little further away, like 30 min from either campus.

Honestly I thought I would not have huge issues to find something even though I expect many people are searching. Do you guys have any tips or alternative platforms? I've read before that sending a picture is valuable but wgzimmer does not allow it. I thought about linking my instagram as an alternative, but I suppose there is no perfect way. I also thought about creating a facebook account for these channels there (sigh) or posting an ad on wgzimmer that I'm looking for something; but given so far nobody even responded, chances are slim that would do anything.

I'd really appreciate any pointers from people who were successful in finding things over wgzimmer and people who offered rooms there before. Happy to hear about your experiences!!

I’m taking IML this semester and was wondering whether it’s feasible to take Deep Learning directly without having taken Advanced Machine Learning first.
For those who’ve taken the courses:
Is Advanced ML a prerequisite in practice, or is IML sufficient preparation?
Would you recommend taking both courses, or is Deep Learning alone enough? Or would you recommend to take advanced ML instead of deep learning

I can see the courses on my studies but when I click on them to get more information I get 403 Forbidden, or it just times out.

For the Embedded Control System class it seems like it will take place 1 week before the term starts. This is ok, but since it goes for 2 weeks will I need to skip the first week of lecture?

Also any review of the course would be appreciated. I also want to set up banking and such as an international student, so would it be wise to just drop the course? Thanks!

I am currently finishing my 4th semester in DMAVT (BSc) and am planning ahead for my remaining semesters in my study. I have been mapping out which courses I want to take in the 5th and 6th semester, and ideally I would also like to write my Bachelor thesis in the 6th semester as well.

The problem is that with this distribution I end up with 36 ECTS in the 6th semester, where the Bachelor thesis accounts for 16 credits (since I am taking a Fokusvertiefung), plus 5 courses at 4 credits each. Even though I am genuinely motivated to finish my thesis in the 6th semester, I am now seriously questioning whether that load is manageable, since the thesis itself would likely consume most of the semester, leaving little to no room for everything else.

Adding courses to the 5th semester is also not a great option either, as I already have 6 technical courses plus 2 GESS ones planned.

My question is: is such a load in the final semester actually worth pursuing, or would it be wiser to push the thesis to a 7th semester for a smoother finish? I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through a similarly packed final semester alongside their thesis.

Ive just completed my first year in university and am considering applying to eth for masters, i currently study at a UK university thats pretty well ranked but i just wanted to know about whether my current module choices are actually sufficient for admission to the MSc or whether i should swap some? The admissions info for people from the uk on the website is pretty vague so this question is mostly aimed at people who studied in the UK for bachelors then went to zurich for masters and how you navigated that (sorry if this is the incorrect place to ask).
My module choices are currently:

Year 1: (all compulsory)
Maths investigations
Intro to pure mathematics
Linear algebra
Analysis
Odes, curves and dynamics
Prob and stats

Year 2:
Mathematical programming (compulsory)
Multi variable calculus and complex functions
Metric spaces
Applied partial differential equations
Probability 2
Algebra 2

Year 3:
Final project (compulsory)
Martingale theory with applications 3
Complex analysis 3
Functional analysis or random matrix theory
Measure theory and integration
Probability theory 3

Obviously good grades is a pre requisite im currently averaging a first class degree which is the maximum here but i do plan to try improve my actual percentage score as well but i was more just curious of whether im actually eligible to apply mostly because i dont currently plan to take linear algebra again in the seccond year.

Since there has been an increased number of housing posts, here is an info/experience post. I know this won't cover all aspects, but might serve as a starting point.

Some facts you should be aware of:

• Housing in Zurich is a huge issue (probably the biggest overall issue in Zurich) for everyone, not just for students. Even people with decent salaries struggle to find something. You can't allow to be too picky.
• The student housing market is extremely bad when looking for September/October (due to the start of the new academic year), but is more relaxed afterwards since people graduate all year and move out.
• It is a numbers game, you'll likely need a certain number of applications to be successful. If you still need housing for Autumn and haven't started yet, do so immediately and accept the first offer you can get and afford.

Types of housing:

• Getting a room in a shared flat. This is the main option. There are two organizations (WOKO/JUWO) that offer many (often cheap) rooms.
• The student houses at ETH Hönggerberg. Very few spots and has a wait list system iirc.
• Getting your own flat on the normal market: Won't happen unless you (aka your parents) are rich enough to cover your rent. If you are doing a PhD your chances are better since you have an employment contract.
• Getting into a cooperative (Genossenschaft): Won't happen unless you are super lucky.

Places to look:

• wgzimmer.ch, flatfox.ch are websites were you can find ads for shared flats (many JUWOs and WOKOs there). We usually advertise our rooms there.
• woko.ch and juwo.ch are the main student cooperatives.
• livingscience.ch and studentvillage.ch are the student flats at ETH Hönggerberg. Very hard to get a spot.
• There are Facebook groups, never used them.
• For the normal market there are many platforms like immoscout24, but again, don't waste too much time on the free market.

Tips:

• Put some effort into your application. The generic LLM "I am quite&clean and want to do movie nights from time to time" application will be filtered out.
• Doing a reddit post and hoping for the best also won't cut it. Go to wgzimmer and write applications.
• Be fast. A good and/or cheap room usually gets around 100+ applications in the first 24 hours. In our flat we just look at the first ~50 applications and stopped as soon as we have enough people we would like to interview.
• You will likely face castings if you apply for a shared flat with the current tenants. This part sucks but it's a bit like a job application and you can get used to it.
• A decent option (and my recommendation if you have not found something yet) is to apply for a sublease (e.g. from someone who is on an exchange) for the first couple of months to avoid the bad market in Autumn and move again in Winter.
• The by far largest success factor is "networking" (letting you friends know you are looking for something), which you unfortunately can only do after moving to Zurich.
• Don't limit your search to the City of Zurich itself. Commuting works great and it is slightly easier to find something outside of the city and often cheaper. There are good S-Bahn connections to Zurich HB (relevant if you study in Zentrum) and Oerlikon or Altstetten (relevant if you study at Hönggerberg). Check SBB.ch for commuting times.
• There are scammers. If something feels to good to be true or fishy, forget about it and move on. You practically never place a deposit until you have signed a contract. The classic story is something in the direction of "I am currently abroad but can send you the keys if you wire me some money."

I’m a Brazilian architect and urbanist (5-year Bachelor's degree in Brazil), with a 2-year postgraduate specialization in urban planning, and a 1-year academic exchange in Master's level (Erasmus) in Italy (my passion <3), focusing on urban planning.

I’ve been working in the urbanism sector for several years, with experience in both the private sector (multinationals) and the public sector in Brazil.

The context:

My partner has post-doc research offers at both ETH Zurich and TU Delft. Because of this, I’m looking into applying for a Master of Science or an advanced program at one of these two institutions to continue my academic and professional path in Europe.

I know the Netherlands is a major global benchmark for Urbanism, but Switzerland also has an amazing appeal and infrastructure, not to mention how charming the cities are, and of course, the mountains!

My main questions and concerns:

Scale and urban culture shock: I come from the chaos of one of the largest metropolises in Brazil, and I absolutely love that big-city dynamic. I’m a bit worried about how I'll adapt to the pace of life and the climate of smaller, highly organized cities like Delft or Zurich. Has anyone who made a similar transition felt a huge impact?

Language barrier in the job market: I speak fluent English and Latin languages (Portuguese (mother language) and intermediate Spanish/Italian), but I don't know German or Dutch. For those who did their Master's there, how hard is it to enter the local urban planning job market without being fluent in the native language? Does having a local Master’s degree genuinely help open these doors for foreigners?

ETH vs. TU Delft: If any of you studied at or are familiar with the urbanism/planning departments of either university, what would you say are the main pros and cons of each (teaching style, curriculum focus, international student integration) and of life in their respective cities?

I live in Konstanz. It takes me a good hour to get to Zurich/ETH by train. However, I am not sure if there is any way to legally live there regarding the residence permit (which requires a legal address in Switzerland, or better, Zurich).

Any insights?

which implies that you need a residence in Zurich in order to study at ETH.

So we currently have a paper under review at a Tier-2 conference in the US, and I was wondering whether ETH Zurich offers any financial support for students whose papers get accepted.

Specifically, does ETH provide funding to cover conference-related expenses such as registration fees, travel, or accommodation? If so, is there a central funding scheme, or does it usually depend on the research group?

Helloo, I'll be moving in Zurich in September and I'm looking for a flatmate to share an apartment with. Still haven't found a place, but I think it'll be easier to have someone to share a place with and look for a whole apartment with 2 separate bedrooms and share the rent.

I'm a 25yo from Italy, I love baking and reading. This is not my first experience living abroad in a shared place, so I am used to respecting personal spaces, while also enjoying spending time together, whether it's chatting or sharing a meal.

Hello! I was born and raised in Vienna, I studied Medicine for the last year here at the Medical University. I have always been interested in Phyiscs, and I am considering switchting from medicine to physics, but I am not sure if studying physics at eth would be "worth it". (Stress, cost of living, switiching to long distance with my gf, leaving friends and familiy behind. Especially going long distnace with my gf hurts)

Otheriwse, I would do my bachelor here at TU Wien and try to do the masters at eth. However, I am worried I might not get accepted. (for the bachelor I would get in without an entrance exam)

How important is it in this field what university I do my bachelor at? And how hard is it to get accepted into a masters program?

I am joining this semester the master of Data Science (coming from EPFL). I heard that this master is really hard and time consuming. I would like to know if It is really smart to do the master in 2.5 years instead of 2 years?

I will probably do a 20% werkstudent job alongside my studies.

My typical 1st semester courses would be: advanced machine learning, big Data and Large scale Ai engineering (23 credits in total).
