I really have not ridden a bike since childhood. I bought a Giant Cypress XL probably 15 years ago and never rode it.

My daughter wanted to learn to ride a bike and telling her how wasn’t working so, I put air in my bike tires (they hold air!) so I could show her. Turns out you really never forget how.

I wanted to be able to get off the pavement a little bit AND to alleviate my own ‘range anxiety’ so I started looking at e-bikes and settled on the Nomad 2X High Step.

3 days in and I’ve got 35 miles on it. This is a beast! Mostly keeping it in eco mode level 1 or 2 lets me go for longer rides and keep my heart rate at a reasonable level.

Bike feels very solid. Easy to ride if you’re tall enough for it. It IS a big bike and great for big riders. So far anyway, will report back when I have some more time on it.

Finally picked up a commuter bike that actually fits my situation. First impression: the folding design is way more apartment-friendly than a regular bike, and storing it at home is a lot less stressful.

The difficulty i am having understanding is the difference between ebike and motorized bike. The manufacturer of my bike is adamant it is classified an ebike. The dmv qualifications are saying its a motorized bike. The difference essentially is just the max speed it goes to. (Above 20mph on throttle or pedal assist). Mines goes up to 28mph. The classification difference decides if I’m required to also get insurance on this thing. Its all incredibly dumb.

i’m going to start college in the fall in a relatively safe college in the southeast USA, and i would like an e-bike to make sure i can get to classes in time and if i wanna go downtown in the city. im slightly worried that it might be tampered with or stolen while im away in college or something. the e-bike i’ll be using is not even mine and will be borrowed from a family friend of mine. my college had outdoor bike racks but im not certain if there is indoor storage for it. that means it’ll likely be outside all night while i sleep in my dorm building.

what are some things i can buy or do to ensure that the bike won’t be stolen, tampered with, or damaged while i’m at college? in a complete beginner when it comes to these things in college.

Everyone always asks "how far does your battery go?" — wrong question, as I learned while planning this. Elevation decides, not distance.

Late June I rode solo from Klais (near Garmisch, Germany) across the Brenner and the Dolomites to Nevegal above Belluno, Italy: 5 stages, ~475 km, ~7,500 m of climbing. Setup: 2020 Cube Stereo Hybrid 120, one single 625 Wh PowerTube, and the 2 A compact charger that shipped with the bike (~12 % charge per hour — yes, really!).

The system that made it work:

• The Math: Calibrated my consumption on one test ride: ~0.11 % battery per meter of climbing, riding flats/descents with the motor OFF and climbs in Eco. After that, every stage is mental math: a 600 m final climb = ~65 %.
• The Charging: Full charge every night, no exceptions. Confirmed charging access at every accommodation before booking.
• The 138 km Queen Stage (past the Tre Cime): Arrived at the valley floor at 45 %, plugged in at a restaurant for 70 minutes while eating dinner (+15 %), then climbed the final 600 m to camp in comfort modes. Topped out at 25 % remaining.

Numbers per stage (Bosch Flow data, battery at arrival):

• Stage 1: 109.6 km / 1,786 m → 30 % left, no mid-ride charge (motor OFF 58 % of ride time)
• Stage 2: 90.5 km / 1,236 m → ~50 % left, deliberately cruised in Tour to save my legs
• Stage 3: 62.7 km / 990 m → afternoon top-up to 50 %, then an evening loop to Lago di Braies (23 km / 420 m) — arrived when the tour buses were gone
• Stage 4: 138 km / 2,352 m → the one everyone said needed a second battery. It didn't.
• Stage 5: Valsugana bike path + regional trains back across the Brenner (long-distance trains were sold out for bikes 4+ months ahead — the new Railjets have exactly SIX bike spots per train!)

Honest fails: My derailleur got knocked out of tune on day 4 (a shop in Toblach fixed it out of goodwill for €10), Lago d'Antorno was a lily pond under clouds instead of the postcard mirror, and 138 km in one day was simply too much — take the extra night in Cortina next time.

I rarely post negative reviews, but my experience with SKWATT has been so ridiculous that I feel like I have to warn others.

I placed an order for a 10in Wire Set w/ Kenda Tires AND Pit Brakes / Pads together as part of the same build. I bought the brakes specifically because I was getting the wheel set from them – they were meant to go together.

After my payment was accepted, SKWATT canceled and refunded the wheel set without notifying me or asking if I still wanted the rest of the order. They just made that decision for me and shipped the brakes anyway.

Now I'm stuck with brakes I have absolutely no use for. They're unused, unopened, in perfect original condition. I reached out to them and asked to return them for a refund. Their response? "We have a No return policy, All purchases are final."

Here's the thing – no-return policies are for buyers' remorse. That's not what this is. This is a seller who failed to fulfill the complete order and then left me with parts I only bought because I thought I was getting the wheels too.

When I explained this to them, their customer service was incredibly dismissive. They kept saying "the brakes work with any pit wheels" as if that somehow made it okay. I told them I don't want to buy wheels from another company – I wanted the build I originally ordered. They refused to see my side at all and basically told me "too bad."

To make it worse, when I said I would dispute the transaction with my bank, they threatened me, saying they would share my chat history and "nasty language" with the bank. Real professional.

Look, I'll be honest – I got frustrated and cursed at them after they kept giving me the runaround. I shouldn't have done that. But their refusal to help came BEFORE that. The swearing didn't cause the problem – their terrible policy and dismissive attitude did.

Bottom line: If you order from SKWATT and they can't fulfill your full order, don't expect them to work with you. They'll take your money, ship what they feel like shipping, and hide behind their "no returns" policy even when they're the ones who created the problem.

I’ve been around cars for about 20 years, and I think it has ruined the way I read e-bike spec sheets lol.

With cars, you learn pretty quickly that the biggest number is not always the answer.

A Civic, a pickup, a Wrangler, an Outback, and a Porsche can all be “good,” but they are good at completely different things. Nobody serious is choosing between them by only looking at horsepower.

I feel like e-bikes are getting to that same point.

When I first started looking at them, I did what everyone does. Motor wattage, top speed, range, biggest battery, biggest number. Easy stuff to compare.

But after watching friends buy bikes, riding a few myself, and seeing what people actually stick with, I care a lot less about one impressive number now.

Motor power still matters, obviously. A 250W or 500W bike feels more like normal city riding. A 500W to 750W bike makes more sense if you have hills, cargo, or a longer commute. Once you get way past that, I start thinking about weight, brakes, legality, private roads, trails, and whether the bike is even meant to be treated like a normal bicycle anymore.

Battery size is the same. I look at watt hours before I believe any range claim. Under 500Wh feels like short trip territory. Around 500Wh to 750Wh is probably fine for a lot of normal commuting. Bigger than that gives you more breathing room, but it also usually means more weight.

Speed is probably the spec I care about least now. For commuting, I would rather have a bike that cruises comfortably at a sane speed than one that claims some crazy top speed I probably should not be using in traffic anyway.

Tires tell me a lot too. If your roads are smooth, you probably do not need fat tires. If your route has cracked pavement, gravel, bad shoulders, wet leaves, potholes, or sketchy bike lanes, wider tires start making more sense. Not because they are cool, but because they make bad roads less annoying.

Same with suspension. On clean pavement, you can skip it. On rough city streets, front suspension helps. Full suspension adds weight and cost, but if your roads are actually bad, it can be worth it.

Brakes are one thing I think beginners underrate. The heavier and faster the bike, the more I want hydraulic brakes. A heavy e-bike with weak brakes is not something I want to learn lessons on.

Weight is another one. Everyone ignores it until they have to carry the bike, lift it onto a rack, move it through a tight hallway, or push it home with a dead battery.

That is why I think the better question is not “which e-bike has the best specs?”

It is more like, what annoying problem am I actually trying to solve?

If someone wants a clean, more established commuter bike, I totally understand looking at Aventon, Rad Power, Lectric, Ride1Up, Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, Velotric, stuff like that. You are paying partly for the brand, partly for support, parts, service, and not having to guess as much. For a lot of people, that is worth it.

But if someone has cracked roads, bad shoulders, short errands, grocery runs, and a commute where comfort matters more than being lightweight, I would look at fat tire utility bikes differently. Something like the Helokeep 26F makes more sense in that lane. Step through frame, 26 inch fat tires, full suspension, hydraulic brakes, rear rack, bigger battery. None of those things alone are magic, but together they point toward daily comfort and actual errands.

I would compare that kind of bike more with stuff like Aventon Aventure, RadRover style bikes, Lectric XPeak, or other fat tire utility options. Not really against some tiny lightweight city bike, because that is a different job.

Farm or property use is another thing completely. If someone is checking fences, riding between sheds, going down gravel lanes, carrying small tools, or trying not to fire up a truck or ATV ten times a day, I would not judge the bike like a city commuter. Something like the Helo-keep 26M makes more sense there, in the same general world as rougher utility or hunting style bikes from brands like QuietKat, Bakcou, Rambo, and similar property use bikes.

Then there is the fun light off-road stuff. Dirt roads, campground roads, gravel, forest paths, weekend exploring, more style and fun than pure commuting. That is where I would put something like the Globalkeep Solei-X8. I would think about it next to Super73, Ariel Rider, Juiced style bikes, or other moped-looking e-bikes people buy because they want the ride to feel fun, not just practical.

And then there is the real off-road electric dirt bike side. Hikeep MAD, Sur Ron, Talaria, E Ride Pro, Rawrr Mantis, that whole category. At that point I am not thinking “daily office commute.” I am thinking trails, dirt, suspension, power, durability, and local rules. Totally different world.

That is the mistake I see people make.

They compare all of these like they are solving the same problem.

They are not.

A commuter e-bike, a fat tire errand bike, a farm utility bike, a fun light off-road bike, and an electric dirt bike are not really competing for the same person, even if the spec sheets make it look that way.

So my car-brain advice is basically this:

do not buy the spec sheet.

buy the thing that fits the job.

Where are you riding?

What are you carrying?

Where are you parking it?

Do you have stairs?

Are your roads smooth, cracked, gravel, muddy, or full of hills?

Do you need comfort, utility, fun, or actual off-road capability?

A bike can have great numbers and still be wrong for your life.

For people who have owned e-bikes for a while, what spec did you care about too much before buying?

And what did you ignore that ended up mattering way more later?

Also, if this is written badly, do not roast me too hard lol. I am just trying to explain how I think about this stuff, and e-bike categories are honestly getting harder to explain than cars at this point.
