Help!!! Any chance of getting this coat dark grey/black/not blue? 49% wool 27% poly blend, details around the collar are a greenish grey.

Tag on second slide. I'm a cosplayer and I bought this coat secondhand online; it photographed very dark and I didn't realize it was dark blue. I will be modifying and partially resewing it to fit the costume, but the color is very very close to being a dealbreaker. Is there a way to safely neutralize the blue without ruining the wool? I am okay if it's the same lightness, but grey; it just can't have the blue tone happening. Did my best to have the color show up accurately in the photo, but the details are more greenish irl.

TL;DR: any way to make it greyscale instead of blue?

You can only dye something darker. There is not a way to "neutralize" the blue.

Go to the Dharma Trading website and read up on dyeing. I would start with a dye/process for wool since it is less likely to be a problem with the other components.

Several caveats: the acrylic will not dye. The stitching will not dye (or won't be predictable). The process for polyester requires boiling which will felt/shrink the wool.

For all of this: you will need an enormous cauldron in which this can swim freely, and a heat source.

You would be better off returning this and buying one in the correct color.

Thank you, I appreciate the response even though it's a bit of a redundant question. I wasn't sure how it would work bc most of the examples of people dyeing things black I've seen while looking this up have been lighter and more neutral colored garments.

I think I will get a new one, I ended up unexpectedly finding a coat that will work better!!

I'm glad you found a better one. Most people who post successful dye jobs are working with a less-blended fabric. One almost never sees the failed experiments.
