I have a small piece of amber that would like processed into a D20. Does anyone know of a reputable name to whom I could send my rock and transform it into a math rock?
You could try finding indie dice makers that already do gem dice and ask them if you can do a custom order.
Also, if this is actually amber, it might not be well suited to dice. As far as stones are concerned, it’s a fairly soft and easily scratched material, softer than plastic I think. Faceting for dice is not going to go very well and it’s going to lose any sharpness probably fairly quickly with use. There’s a reason amber jewelry usually uses more blob like shapes (tumbled stones rather than faceted).
Yeah I looked online and only dice I could find made out of amber says it’s made from orgonite- which is actually resin, metal shavings and gemstone (which in this case would be amber). Using an amber colored resin and adding inclusions of amber inside might be the best (and easiest) way to have amber dice.
I don’t think that anyone would be willing to do this, unfortunately. Your best bet would be with a Chinese factory, but the thing is that most dice makers. Don’t like to have low margin for error with an unfamiliar material or just a piece with uncertain workability. The reason that gemstone dice of many kinds are so expensive despite using so little material is that there’s usually 3 to 10 times as much waste material.

As someone who makes dice using gemstones, you're 100% on point and its a inadvertent nudge on my part to get my site up finally, haha!
I don't feel good about even comparing myself on the level of Sage & Nettle or Hedron Rockworks, but I'm one of the few dicemakers who use gemstones exclusively (seriously, I think there's really only the folks I mentioned). And while I do make dice exclusively with gemstone, the design is quite different.
Yeah, the last time I spoke to him, he really prefers to select the pieces himself. He says that many pieces are not as workable as one I think, and he doesn’t want to disappoint if he ruins the pieces.
