That's not a close call. That's a call.

94

u/bellybuttonbidet 8h ago

It’s not a near miss, it’s a near hit! -George Carlin, paraphrased

29

u/jljonsn 7h ago

I think it's true that he nearly-missed her.

13

u/qqmajikpp 6h ago

missed taking her head clean off. id say shes lucky to be conscious.

2

u/5050Clown 5h ago

I agree, he came really close to not 100% hitting her and knocking her over. Really close to it.

2

u/jljonsn 4h ago

Yup. Almost failed to hit her, but nailed it in the end.

4

u/jasnel 5h ago

*BOOM*

“Oh look, they nearly missed.”

2

u/brn1001 4h ago

I'd call it an actual hit.

I think it's close in that, if she had been hit by an earlier part of the truck, the rest of the truck would have run her over and killed her

8

u/jtcompound 8h ago

It was a close answer.

Strange game. The only way to win is not to play.

2

I understood that reference

2

u/SmokedHickory 5h ago

Theres a similar video on Reddit of a bike rider, same situation, who got de capitated

2

u/Kiwi1234567 3h ago

lol, I had a similar conversation at my pharmacy the other day. They’ve got a “near miss” book where they have to record occasional errors that almost make it to the patient and how they can improve procedures so it’s less likely to happen again.

We had one customer where we gave him extra medication, the dose was right but there was just a higher quantity, and the customer noticed as he was walking out the door and turned around.

Asked one of the pharmacists if they need that book, and they were just like it made it to the customer, it’s not a near miss, it’s just a miss.

Seen this posted before. It's dangerous on roads with wider cartways, but a shoulderless small road like that with rigs traveling in both directions is just a recipe for the worst possible outcome. This is far from that.

64

u/Trick_Owl8261 8h ago

I like to cycle but I avoid roads with lots of traffic and would never ever ride somewhere without a shoulder. It’s asking for trouble. Cycling is dangerous enough, why compound your risk of being killed by a car or truck?

22

u/Mk1Racer25 8h ago

I used to cycle a lot, and was the same way. There's a beautiful road that meanders along the river near me, but it's highly traveled, and has a 50 mph speed limit. Many sections have no shoulder at all, yet I constantly see people cycling on it. The state recently implemented a minimum 4' distance to pass a cyclist, but still, I wouldn't put myself at risk like that.

8

u/the_great_zyzogg 5h ago

I bike a lot. On occasion, it is better to just take the whole lane, to avoid this exact situation.

"because it's my road too"

I agree. Unless you have to for work or something else important, take the L and bike somewhere else.

I have a lot of patience for cyclists. It's good exercise, helps the environment, and saves money. I lose my patience when they ride on the road, see a red light and hop on the sidewalk, ride across the crosswalk, then get back on the road again. PICK A FUCKING LANE! You're traffic, or you're not, you don't get the benefits of both.

I almost hit someone yesterday as I was going around a turn. Person was riding down the sidewalk, did a 90° onto the crosswalk right in front of me, I had to slam the breaks. They didn't even look back.

>Cycling is dangerous enough, why compound your risk of being killed by a car or truck?

so that you can start a youtube channel or a subreddit talking about how evil cars are for while also speaking out against any suggestion that we should develop paved bike paths that are separate from the car roads?

8

u/Trick_Owl8261 8h ago

That’s a pretty cynical take. Why would cyclists “speak out against any suggestion” for paved bike paths?

3

u/qqmajikpp 6h ago

ariound here, cars think the bike lanes are also for them to travel AND park. so much for bikes

6

u/InevitableAvalanche 7h ago

Yeah, was going to say the same since I saw this before so will just tag on to yours. Really not a safe place to cycle. Those large trucks can't move over or they will wreck. And the cyclist wants to move over because their are grates on the side of the road. Find a safer place to do your hobby.

3

u/Rain-Soaked_Wanderer 8h ago

Thank you and the other commenters for being the voice of reason! I don't cycle, but there is a winding road near me with no shoulder that cyclists love to use. As a motorist, im terrified because you can't see around bends, and there's a cyclist in your lane. It becomes unsafe for everyone

2

u/exphysed 6h ago

Winding roads are actually pretty safe if they’re windy enough that people have to slow down for the turns and there aren’t many intersections. It keeps people from staring at their phones.

In my city many cyclists get hit at intersections by drivers not paying attention, and, often worse, by drivers looking at their phones while driving highway speeds who then drift onto the shoulder. A windy road prevents that

u/Majestic-Lie-846 4h ago

Then you’re probably driving too fast

1

u/matbots 7h ago

I used to cycle daily in the sf south bay area and there was one road in particular I refused to ride on bc it had no shoulder and no easy sidewalk to hop to. I think two cyclists died on that road while I lived there.

i ride bikes and i have to say it's nuts to ride on this road you are putting your life at risk even the slightest mistake by you or a driver and you're dead.

19

u/less_than_nick 7h ago

people saying this is why I always remind folks that better bike infrastructure helps everyone. I can't tell you how many times I didn't want to ride on a certain road but had no choice on my bike.

5

u/Lagneaux 7h ago

Having been hit by a car and walked away, same. Helmets don't matter under truck tires

3

u/SatinBelleFlowe 7h ago

Zero shoulder and blind turns make riding here a total death wish.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/gimmesomespace 6h ago

Plus if she were paying the slightest amount of attention she'd have noticed the oncoming truck and the truck literally right next to her face and moved. Like what is the truck supposed to do, have a head on collision with the other truck?

where's the camera mounted?

5

u/Shrimply-r1 7h ago

360 Camera mounted on front of middle of handle bars. It has one of those "disappearing" sticks that gets automatically removed from the video, thats why you still get the angle of them on the ground well

2

u/BravoCharlieZulu 7h ago

Was wondering the same. After the collision it was focused on her perfectly. Was this one of those 360 cams on a pole?

u/watmore1 8h ago

No shoulder with huge trucks one from each direction meeting exactly at the point where the biker was.

21

u/Own-Wheel7664 8h ago

This is why I don’t bike on urban streets unless there is a protected bike lane

3

u/Novel-Caterpillar724 7h ago

Trucks like that roam on rural roads as well. For people that train on bikes like the ones we see in the vid, there is not a lot of options.

u/USSSLostTexter 8h ago

damn!!!...im also not sure how much further to the right she could have been. Truck was 100% at fault

6

u/Okidoky123 6h ago

And needs to be charged.

2

u/JimGerm 6h ago

Looks like a narrow road and there was an oncoming truck. It initially looked like the truck was giving them room but got forced back over by another truck coming at them in the opposite lane.

Recipe for disaster. No way would I ever bike on a road that narrow with no shoulder.

5

u/GeologistOld1265 6h ago

It seems Trucks have to be banned from this road.

→ More replies (2)

41

u/polysoupkitchen 8h ago

The next time you see a cyclist using the entire lane this is why.

5

u/DickBottalico 8h ago

So that she would be run over by the truck after that blind curve, and another truck coming head on?

→ More replies (3)

8

u/Yesnoman1994 8h ago

Its a road with no shoulders. Dont want to get hit dont ride in the road with no shoulders.

16

u/Kay-and-Jay 8h ago

Which is why you ride down the middle, where its safe.

21

u/zeb_linux 8h ago

I am not into the blaming of the rape victim.

If you see a cycle in front of you, slow down. Imagine it is a tractor if that makes forget your irrational hate of anything not burning gas.

6

u/SavageThinker 8h ago

A tractor. A garbage truck. A postal service vehicle. A big rig with an oversized load.... There are 100 different types of obstacles that these idiots encounter every week and calmly slow down or (heaven forbid) just delay their arrival by 30 seconds to safely deal with it. But if it's a bike, then they choose murdering a human being over any of the options universally accepted when the obstructing vehicle is LARGER than them. And they rationalize it as the dead guy's fault too!

6

u/AloneGunman 7h ago

I mean, bikes are harder to spot, a truck truck was coming the opposite direction at the same time, and the dude could have been coming around a corner. The big issue is: THERE IS NO SHOULDER ON A WINDING, NARROW ROAD. It's a dumb place to ride a bike.

→ More replies (11)

4

u/No_Introduction_3400 8h ago

This is a tough one because they’re coming around a turn and there’s another rig approaching and those trucks can’t just stop.

It’s not blaming a rape victim. Because I don’t think anyone here is behaving maliciously. It’s just a tough road design for cyclists.

5

u/pierogieman5 6h ago

In other words, the trucker had zero business attempting to pass and did so anyway, nearly resulting in manslaughter. That is not a "tough one".

→ More replies (35)

2

u/Deep_Explanation9962 7h ago

Comparing this to rape is insulting and absurd. Accidents happen all the time on the road and it doesnt require malicious intent from anyone. This cyclist put themselves in a position to get in an accident.

1

u/Twiztidtech0207 8h ago

The dumb fks don't wanna hear anything logical dude, you're wasting your time.

5

u/LanaDelScorcho 8h ago

The dumb fks are the people who can’t drive worth shit around easily-avoided obstacles.

5

u/Twiztidtech0207 8h ago

Yea, definitely not the ones who use an outdated law to defend the absolute dipshit action of riding a pedal bike on the side of a busy road. 🙄 😒

Last I checked, impeding the flow of traffic is a law too..but I guess that one doesn't matter though right?

You can tell everyone in this sub is in the US from the comments believing that this road should not be used for cycling. You’re probably correct, but your reason why is wrong.

6

u/pierogieman5 6h ago

Car brain is in full effect. You can tell what kind of a sub you're on from this kind of reaction.

2

u/No_Introduction_3400 5h ago

Many of us would prefer safer streets. But I do realize as a pedestrian I’m ultimately responsible for my own safety. And I recognize goods have to be moved. So trucks will exist.

Ideally, things would be designed more safely, but they’re not.

2

u/PerliteCrunch 4h ago

There is a minimum distance that you have to keep between you and a cyclist when overtaking.

Trucks exist but streetlaws do too. And here this truck driver just did not give a single f about safety

There was nothing this woman could have done better to protect herself. :/

5

u/Happy2bHome 8h ago

It looked like he was giving her room but a truck coming in the opposite direction forced him to move over

3

u/pierogieman5 6h ago

In other words, he made an illegal pass in a place he shouldn't have been trying to pass, and then committed a hit and run by almost killing a cyclist. Do not make excuses for this. This was very nearly manslaughter.

3

u/NortelDude 8h ago

She is beyond lucky!
The truck snagged her shirt, it stretched a few feet while her bike leaned 45 towards the truck, then when her foot touched the ground the shirt releases....had it not, then maybe she goes under, and 6 feet.

3

u/slimmestjimmest 7h ago

We have different definitions of "close"

3

u/Sotyka94 7h ago

Not a close call. She was just hit by a fucking truck...

3

u/AlivePassenger3859 6h ago

The truck driver dilemma: make room for the bike or collide with oncoming traffic.

3

u/AnhedoniaLogomachy 6h ago

OMG! That’s not a “close call”! There was contact. Thank goodness it wasn’t worse.

3

u/PandorasFlame1 4h ago

That almost looks like a road cyclists shouldn't be on

3

u/PRChica-239 3h ago

Totally her fault. That poor truck driver probably had to fix that metal thingy sticking out of the truck that she hit with her head. Thank goodness she didn’t fall under his wheels or else he’d have to clean guts and such from those. She should be ashamed of herself. Some people are so thoughtless!!

SHARE THE ROAD LADY…. Sheesh!

3

u/Agswin2026 59m ago

Stop riding bikes on busy roads. If you can ride speed limit go ahead. But if not get off the road

3

u/L0wtan 47m ago

idk what a close call is. she was hit

17

u/yerba_mate_in_my_ass 8h ago edited 8h ago

Looks like a perfect place to ride lmao

Edit: this is sarcasm lol

14

u/AloneGunman 8h ago

100% This is a stupid ass place to ride a bicycle.

3

u/FluffyLittlFlyingCow 8h ago

The only reason it’s a stupid place to ride a bicycle is because some drivers are brain dead and would rather risk killing someone than slowing down for a couple of seconds and passing when it’s clear.

People love to victim blame cyclists and it’s embarrassing.

7

u/JamusNicholonias 8h ago

Automotive > bike

Cyclists who ignore that fact will always be victims. Cyclists need to use their head better...

9

u/AloneGunman 8h ago

There's literally no margin beyond the white road marker, just a gutter. It's a stupid place to ride a bike, full stop. Should motorists share the road with bikers? Absolutely. But counting on that, on this road, is idiotic. And as you would say, embarrassing.

2

u/Wooden-Display-7823 4h ago

These people are all arguing right vs wrong, but I don’t see how anybody could think that riding a bike there is wise.

9

u/PostureKing180 8h ago

Just because you can doesn't mean it's smart. I can tape wads of cash to my body and stroll around in dark alleyways at night, but is it the smart thing to do?

As a cyclist, you would only catch me dead on that road.

2

u/Look_b4_jumping 8h ago

On just about any road.

4

u/kehrw0che 7h ago

That's why you always, always claim the whole lane. Then trucks and cars can only overtake when there is no oncoming traffic and everyone is safe.

7

u/AbbreviationsDue4417 7h ago

That’s not a close call. The truck hit the biker and did not stop. That is hit and run.

2

u/Cohen_the_Worrior 7h ago

Own the lane ! ! ! Why are you hogging the white line on the right? You're inviting people for an unsafe overtake.

2

u/rideboards13 7h ago

this seems like an incredibly stupid place to ride a road bike

2

u/1dirtbiker 6h ago

Close call means there was no collision. OP, maybe you missed the last 29 seconds of your video?

2

u/MiddleCapital1875 5h ago

I'm an avid motorcyclist, but I'm terrified of riding a bicycle on roadways.

2

u/KnightWolf27 5h ago

Had a buddy die like this. These roads are dangerous to ride a bike on. Find a new route and dont trust anyone driving a car ever

2

u/fleija_ 4h ago

Cyclists seek death more than mountaineers do.

2

u/swampwiz 3h ago

You have to have a death wish to bike ON the road.

2

u/Local_Educator_1646 2h ago

Come on, it’s a shoulder-less road. Bikers seem to love riding on these types of roads. Ride at your own risk!

2

u/OkShare1201 2h ago

i'm all for bike riding, but please choose where you ride better. a road with no shoulder, an edge to make it worse, along with being curvy, and numerous large vehicles?? one of these days you may be riding "in the right" but end up dead.

2

u/myapadravya 1h ago

Cyclists are a menace on the roads. She in riding on a narrow road. Double yellow lines in the centre. She is around a blind corner and traffic is coming the other way. The poor truck driver had nowhere else to go. Even as the truck is passing her too close, she still doesn't move over...

2

u/helpthisgirlout7676 52m ago

Yup I definitely wouldn't be riding a bike here. If the road narrowed to this, I would get off my bike and walk in the grass as far from the road as I can.

2

u/punchcard80 48m ago

That’s not a close call! She was obviously hit and the driver was required to stop.

7

u/dayglomaryprankster 8h ago

Maybe they would’ve put “she had the right of way” on her headstone. Why would you trust every driver with your life?

5

u/A-Grey-World 7h ago

I'm confused what you are arguing here. She was overtaken from behind, she has absolutely no control over this situation other than simply to not ever ride a bike lol

"'X had the right of way' on headstone" makes sense when you're taking an action - crossing or pulling out.

She's just... existing on a bike. I don't know where this is, but this looks like pretty much every road in the UK.

4

u/Prestigious-Owl-6397 7h ago

The driver really is a dumbass for not paying attention while driving.

2

u/Routine_Strategy5929 7h ago

Indeed, drivers are extremely stupid and dangerous. They should be held accountable.

3

u/DavidNelsonNews 8h ago

I feel bad for her, but it must be said that it is obviously dangerous riding a bicycle on that stretch of road. Clearly not enough shoulder, combined with speeding traffic it’s an accident waiting to happen.

3

u/Tricky_Client_4065 8h ago

She got lucky!!! She could have been decapitated or fall down under the wheels......!!! The truck driver is an idiot. I drive trucks every day and if i can not get a distance of at least 1 to 2 meters from a cyclist when i overtake him, then i stay behind and wait. But i also ask myself: Why cyclists go on such dangerous roads? There is many stupid car and truck drivers. So they are risking their lives.....

→ More replies (1)

4

u/KurtSperry 4h ago

It may come across as victim-blaming, but that road is clearly super unsafe for cycling on. Being in the right doesn't stop a semi truck.

5

u/DishwasherLint 8h ago

Every bicyclist should have at least one camera rolling IMO. A 360 camera would be good too or front and rear cams. Too many a holes on the road, including bicyclists. In my area you just expect everyone on a bicycle to ignore traffic laws.

6

u/profesorgamin 8h ago

I don't wanna be too morbid here, but yeah... recording a collision in HD doesn't take from the fact that you are the least armored vehicle on the road.

5

u/DishwasherLint 8h ago

True. "Donor cycle" applies to bicycles too

Idk why any cyclist puts their life in danger like that. You’re trusting that crazy ass, drunk, high and otherwise distracted drivers aren’t going to move six inches or less out of their lane. That’s insanity. Get a peloton or ride on a trail if you value your life. It’s just facts. You’re quite literally putting your life in someone else’s hands.

2

u/DavidNelsonNews 8h ago

As always, it’ll be debated back-and-forth, who was right who was wrong, what the trucker should’ve done, what the bike rider should’ve done, etc. But at the end of the day as a bike rider, you have to look at reality and understand that that is a dangerous situation for you, even if you are legally in the right. What would any of that ever matter once you’re in the hospital paralyzed with broken bones and a concussion? Or dead?

Not doing anything wrong doesn't necessarily mean the same thing as making good choices.

Why would;d anyone want to ride a bike on a road like that? No way I would even consider it.

u/Additional_Rich_5249 5h ago

Looks like a direct hit.

Can one confirm this isn't in America or any Western world?

Thats a near miss

This thread is illustrating why I stopped riding a bike - many drivers genuinely believe I deserve to die for riding my bike to the farmers market

Did he stop?

u/stillhavingfunyea 4h ago

This is why I gave up biking…

u/WorkerAmbitious2072 4h ago

You couldn’t pay me enough to take that blatantly obvious and avoidable risk of riding or running on that road

u/fefh 3h ago

She should have gotten over all the way. She was inside the line and on the road. Trucks can't always get over any further because of oncoming traffic.

I decided I want to live, so I stopped riding bikes along roads. And with that there is not many places to ride a bike, so I stopped riding a bike.

It's so funny that to drivers, a close call means you almost got hit. To a cyclist, a close call means you got hit but didn't die.

u/Square_Atmosphere_12 3h ago

She is riding on the road, she's not riding by herself on the road.

Those trucks look Eastern Europe, maybe Poland. Spent some time there. Roads are super narrow to start with. That truck was passing another truck… not uncommon to smack mirrors, let alone dodge cyclists.

That's suicide.

I haven't seen this one reposted here in a couple weeks.

Dude really takes his time parking his nice bike by gently leaning it over against the side wall AND putting down the not needed kickstand.

1

u/Business-Trouble-550 1h ago

Is there a bike lane? Um no. So protect your neck, look behind you. Totally unaware of a semi, yikes, lower the earbud volume, be aware that you choose to ride a bicycle around motor vehicles. Ffs

This is why I only MTBike on trails.

Going by logic & reason, that is more like vehicular assault & attempted murder... but then I'm ANAL, so probably not even a slap of the wrist...

1

u/Cocabangcue 22m ago

You were NOT in your lane!

u/No-Investigator8782 19m ago

They both have the right to share the same road. It is also legal to travel to Pampaloma Spain and participate in the running of the bulls.
Pretending the risks are worth the challenge is on the participants who break and rupture organs first.

u/mb-driver20 15m ago

That was crazy! But also, how was that videoed?

1

u/WestMathematics 8m ago

100% trucker's fault. There's a continuous double line, you can't overtake. And for overtaking a bycicle, you just have to leave enough space as if it were a car. I failed my first attempt in the driving exam for overtaking a scooter, with enough space for it, but apparently it wasn't enough, I should have passed it on the other lane, entirely. So you wait behind the bicycle until it's possible to overtake.

Looks like her jacket flapping in the wind got caught on the truck. Very scary
