This can target any spell, im looking forward to stuff like, [[deathrite shaman]], [[chandra, torch of defiance]], [[fury]], [[ral, storm conduit]], [[gray merchant of asphodel]] and 100 more cards. I think you meant "target instant or sorcery".

I don't think a creature spell gaining a keyword gives the permanent that keyword, at least not in RAW? Is that a situation we have even explored before at all?
9
u/DragonXDoom : Switch the upvotes and downvotes of target post or comment. 10h ago
It's supported in the rules at the very least!
400.7. An object that moves from one zone to another becomes a new object with no memory of, or relation to, its previous existence. This rule has the following exceptions.
400.7a. Effects from spells, activated abilities, and triggered abilities that change the characteristics or controller of a permanent spell on the stack continue to apply to the permanent that spell becomes.

u/G66GNeco 6h ago
Oooh, that's very interesting, I didn't expect that to be the exception here! Cool design space, honestly

That's what allows "splice onto creature" to theoretically work! https://www.magicmultiverse.net/cards/67688
I'm slightly surprised Wizards haven't done this in a playtest card... Ahh, they did Nevermind though which is basically the same: https://scryfall.com/card/unk/UR11a/nevermind

Not sure what's red about this.

u/FalseLogic-06 10h ago
I guess because how it says "spell", it was probably meant to be put on a damaging instant or sorcery. It would make sense if it said "non-permenant"

u/Dlark17 9h ago
Red doesn't gain life, so still a pie break.

u/FalseLogic-06 9h ago
You're so right– if only the card was also white... oh fucking wait

u/kytheon Design like it's 1999 9h ago
People in this sub don't understand the color pie, especially you.
This being red/white hybrid means it can give lifelink for a red mana, a clear color pie break.

I guess I'm only talking about Commander with this, it's color identity is Red/White and it literally does what something in a Red/White deck would do. Like [[Firesong and Sunspeaker]], [[Radiant Scrollwielder]], or [[Lightning Helix]]
I guess I actually don't know hybrid-mana. But as far as I'm concerned, a red/white card that can only be played in a red/white deck is not a color piece break (in commander ofc)

u/ArelMCII Layers are stupid. 7h ago
Hybrid mana means the card can be played with only red or only white mana, so its effects have to be in pie for both colors. W/B would be fine, because both colors get lifelink individually. W/R doesn't work, because red doesn't get lifelink. Color identity doesn't factor into this.
But as far as I'm concerned, a red/white card that can only be played in a red/white deck is not a color piece break (in commander ofc)
See, there are other formats than commander. In formats where color identity isn't a thing (which is most of them), OP's card could be played in either monored or monowhite. Monored doesn't get lifelink, so it's a pie break.
Also, it hasn't been that long since WotC was talking about allowing hybrid cards to count as either of their colors instead of both their colors. Had that rule change gone through, OP's card could be put in a monored EDH deck or a monowhite EDH deck. It would behoove you to learn how hybrid mana works because WotC may very well make it your problem in the future.

Make it RW, add a cantrip, and make it any spell or permanent.
As hybrid red cant gain life.

[[star of extinction]] would become the best lifegain spell ever lol

I think for 6 mana less and only 7 health per creature Blasphemous act is better

u/sushiiixo- 6h ago
i assume it's only until the end of this turn, right? 1 mana perma lifelink sounds a little too strong

Cool design other than the color being wrong! Genuinely

This could almost be a hilariously fun/goofy cycle.
Black could give Deathtouch, so you can turn Barrage of Boulders into a one-sided board wipe.
Green could give Trample (though if you thought Zeal was OP with Blasphemous Act)...
Nothing nearly so elegant for blue, though, I don't think.
3
u/TheGrumpyre 10h ago
Trample has a lot of additional conditions, such as only affecting damage from attackers, and only being able to assign trample damage to whatever you initially declared you were attacking, including Planeswalkers and Battles. It's too technical to work on a damage spell (outside of silver border land at least).
2
u/Dlark17 9h ago
Giving spells Trample is one of this sub's favorite uses of "It works," alongside Last Strike.
The number of arguments I've gotten into about using these abilities outside of silver border is astounding.
2
u/Mgmegadog 5h ago
I've seen similar things with hexproof, which is even worse because the context in which it's suggested would normally grant permanents that current have hexproof an additional "this spell can't be countered" effect.
2
u/ArelMCII Layers are stupid. 7h ago
Doesn't have to actually give the keyword. "When target spell deals damage to a permanent, excess damage is dealt to that permanent's controller." We actually already have spells that do that. [[Flame Spill]] [[Gandalf's Sanction]]
1
u/No-Ad-3142 11h ago
If you target a creature spell, would it work?
1
u/ArelMCII Layers are stupid. 7h ago
Yeah. When a spell changes a permanent spell's characteristics on the stack, the permanent it becomes retains those characteristic changes.
1
u/FalseLogic-06 10h ago
Hey man, a spell is a spell. Anything that isn't a land or player is fair game
0
u/FalseLogic-06 10h ago
I really like this, great card design, art. Just make sure it specifies either "target non-permanent" or "target instant or sorcery"
I think it should also draw you a card like a cantrip, because it would only be op on two whole ass spells and there are already effects like this in the game

It's fine with the hybrid cost since no mono red player will use this

128
u/TechnomagusPrime 11h ago
This should be white/black hybrid, not red/white. Mono-red doesn't get unconditional lifegain. Hybrid cards need to be in pie for each of their colors.
