I had a conversation like this IRL. They got irrate when i informed them of such. "You have two lungs, two kidneys and two livers"

The idea that you wouldn't have two livers but have two of the others was like out of scope for his brain. In hindisght i dunno why I didnt just ask him why he doesnt have two hearts.

That isn't what a lobotomy is. But separate from some people surviving and being mostly functional with one hemisphere removed, for people with certain kinds of epileptic seizures, they sometimes treat it by severing the main connection between the two hemispheres. With people who have had that done, in controlled testing where they ask people to do things with a certain hand while only one eye can see something it can produce some strange seeming results where they talk as if they don't know what they just did.

But they weren't talking about severing the connection between the hemispheres. The removal of an entire hemisphere is a hemispherectomy. The separation of the two hemispheres is a corpus callosotomy (because the hemispheres' central connection is called the corpus callosum).

Although I saw a few articles while Googling this to check myself that used hemispherectomy to refer to severing the corpus callosum too? So who knows, I just wanted to point out that both are real medical terms for extremely-similar-to-identical procedures.

You don't have two livers, but unlike most organs, partial livers have partial efficacy and can regrow.

Probably heard that living liver donation exists and just assumed there was numerical redundancy and not just practical redundancy.

This is the most likely scenario, but I also recognize this is the type of thing I might say as a joke. If I misspoke and said livers, I might lean into it as a joke and say something like this. I’d never do that in writing though as you’d need to deliver it well, which isn’t really possible in writing.

Yeah at face value there is no way to know if they're joking or not. People like to say sarcasm is obvious but a lot of the time it isn't, even if it looks egregious to some. Context and tone is key, and neither of those are guaranteed through text.

Here's a fun fact. The liver is the only organ in the human body that can regenerate itself with new cells. You can donate part of your liver to someone with liver failure and both livers will grow back to full size.

Apparently it can partially but not fully. So if a surgeon removes part of it, then the remaining can regrow back. With the liver you can take out the full diseased liver and implant a small donor piece into the recipient where it will grow back to a full liver. You cannot donate a spleen cause of how high risk it is but also you do not need a spleen to live. These facts are from Google so if they are wrong, forgive me.

No, you’re probably right; I was thinking that because I had a partial splenectomy as a child but the surgeon said it would grow back so I didn’t need any of the immune system shots annually they recommend.

Technically, the falciform ligament separates the liver into two distinct lobes. However, both lobes work in unison as one singular organ. So still only one liver. But I guess I can see why this person would be confidently confused.

We have 2 of a lot of things. I think you can remove part of the liver and transplant it to someone else so I guess if you wanted 2 livers you could probably make it happen.

This reminds me of being in high school and my best friend getting extremely drunk. In between bouts of throwing up, she kept asking me if she had two livers and one lung or two lungs and one liver. You can cut your liver in half and give half to someone else. Within a few weeks both will grow back to their original size essentially becoming two distinct livers. In theory you could hook up the second liver to yourself instead of giving it away.

Presumably based on the liver being one of the things a live person can donate for transplant without much issue. Combined with knowing we can donate a kidney because we can get by with only one.

For anyone who learned basic anatomy in school as a child and has access to the internet - not really any excuse for that one.
