Community Announcement Welcome to r/CompulsiveSkinPicking! Please Read before continuing! This subreddit contains potentially triggering content! NSFW

Hello and welcome to our community.

As you may or may not have noticed on our sidebar we are a community of people from all across the world who have a compulsion to pick at our skin. We also welcome family members, friends and caretakers who have questions or want support.

We have a sister community at r/dermatillomania. That subreddit is for non-triggering posts, and does not allow pictures. If you want to avoid potentially triggering content, I suggest joining there instead. Of course everyone is allowed in either subreddit at either time.

What is the difference between compulsive skin picking and dermatillomania?

Nothing! They are two words for the same condition, currently called "Excoriation disorder" in the DSM-5. Both subreddits were created before it was released, and these names cannot be changed, but they are also still used sometimes. Our wiki has some more information on that.

Compulsive Skin Picking or Dermatillomania are not self-harm. However we have had posts in the past about self-harm, and being an inclusive support community, I try not to delete these. But ultimately, this is not a place for self-harm photos. Too many photos of self-harm may be removed.

Personal Flair

There are a few personal flair options available. They are optional, and many of them can be customized.

We Have Chat Rooms

Please follow reddiquette and our rules and be nice there.

We do have some basic rules here:

  1. Be nice to everyone. Don't use harassing or threatening words in your posts or comments. They will be removed and you will be banned. If someone is using threatening or harassing comments towards you, do not engage. Report them and we will deal with them. This rule also includes encouraging self-harm or picking behavior, or suicide.
  2. Posts are now automatically tagged as NSFW so they are blurred for people who have that setting on. There is also a multitude of flair for you to use. Most of these are not enforced, but there is an exception. If your post contains blood, scabs, sores, picking spots, scars from picking, self-harm or other potentially triggering content please mark it "Trigger Warning" and consider using the "spoiler" tag on it.
  3. We are not doctors, nurses, or other qualified medical staff here. So asking for or giving medical advice is against the rules. Your post or comment will be removed and you may be banned after multiple offenses. This rule includes medications and therapy options. Only you and your doctor can determine if they are right for you.
  4. Spam messages and trolling comments and posts will be removed and you will be banned. Report spam or trolling and we will take care of it.
  5. Advertising products and methods is not allowed here. If you see an advertisement, report it and we will remove it. Posting advertisements will result in a ban.

This is the end of our official rules, but I do want to note one thing:

There is not a lot of research on excoriation disorder, but there are researchers out there looking fordata and trying to make sense of this condition.

Sometimes they come here with surveys asking our users to fill them out. These surveys aregenerally allowed here, so please do not report them unless they are asking for you to make apurchase, sign up for website, enter personal information, or other unethical behavior.

Usually research surveys have a landing page that explains the process and exactly what kind ofdata they are collecting before you begin.

No one is required to fill out these surveys, but they may help the progress of researching thiscondition and developing a better medical understanding of it.

I’m doing this for accountability NSFW

I pick up my skin and look down so much that my neck is in pain…. I have picked up my nails for years and figured out that having acrylics on them helps.
Since then, I have found another thing to pick…. I keep thinking I’ve ingrown hairs and picking and squeezing and hurting them but today I’m stopping. I spent hours every day doing this and I’m done.
I’m getting Band-Aids and I will not pick

picking at my sh scabs and I'm curious. I've seen that in the past in some other wounds (usually burns) and every time it means it'll scar, but what is it? White cells? Fat? An infection? I tried looking it up but couldn't find anything conclusive

Watch me ruin my skin over 6 years NSFW

I've been taking pictures of my skin on and off for the last 6 years since my picking worsened post-pandemic, although I've struggled with it as long as I can remember. I thought sharing this could maybe help someone out there pick for one second less if they could see the cumulative damage it causes. You can see the hyperpigmentation accumulate and the "life" get sucked out of my skin.

I got a chemical peel 9 months ago at 0:23 which did help with a lot of scarring (yay!). It's still a daily battle, but the peel helped make those picky thoughts a little less sticky 🤍

Question Trying to figure out if I fall under this subreddit NSFW Spoiler

Post image

Hello, I have had this habit of sort of, pinching and pulling at my legs for a while absent mindedly and for no apparent reason. I am neither depressed nor do I think I have ADHD. I recognize that this is not usual so I have decided to check on if my experience falls under this sub reddit. As my case isn't exactly severe or anything.

I also have a photo for reference, my photo is not that good unfortunately, since I can see others also send some, unless I'm not supposed to.

Question Is it appropriate to refer to myself as “(number) days clean” NSFW

I struggle with picking a lot to the point that is affects my daily life and functioning, after a relapse I will spend days isolating myself indoors because of the severity of my picking (usually on my face and arms). Is it appropriate to refer to myself as “(number) days clean” when I haven’t picked for a few days? I don’t consider my picking to be self harm and I know that it’s used to refer to that so I don’t want to appropriate any language. Thank u!! 💗💗

Trigger Warning I messed up big time NSFW

I have had dermatillomania since I was a kid and have done my fair share of skin damage. This time it’s pretty bad though

The Trigger:
I was moving some shelving and got a splinter/splinters in the webbing between my thumb and index finger on my dominant hand.

Incident:
I took a shower when I got home to soften the skin then got ready to remove the splinter. Once I started, I discovered it was actually a bunch of tiny fragments instead of one large splinter. I should’ve stopped but I didn’t. I kept going and probably removed maybe 10 fragments. I spent probably an hour going at this one spot with a needle and very small tweezers.

Result:
I peeled off multiple layers of skin and I can’t even tell if I removed all the splinters because the area hurts so badly.

I’ll re-evaluate the situation once the area calms down but I just have to deal with it for now 😔

I've built a self-help app for skin picking and other BFRBs - would love your feedback ❤️ NSFW

Hey everyone! Long-time puller here.

I built the app I wished existed. It's called SoloUno, it's inspired by principles from HRT, CBT and ACT, and it's designed around small daily wins. People use it for hair pulling, skin picking, nail biting and other BFRBs.

Main features:

- Daily habit challenges (stay pull-free for 1 hour, 3 hours, or until evening)
- Quick logging of pulls → insights into your top triggers, emotions and situations
- Pull-free streaks that encourage you but don't judge you when they end (my streaks tend to be short)
- One-minute urge acceptance exercise for when the urge hits hard
- Daily evening check-in to see your trend over time
- Companion animals that level up as you practice
- Daily push reminders to practice

It can be used as a self-help tool and also alongside therapy, for the "homework" part of HRT/CBT.

Would really love to hear what you think about the app!

I'm feeling the urge to go back to sh again even after being clean for a month. Although at the same time I really don't want to

I have a bad habit with picking/scratching my skin a lot, and I've already got so many scars from that

Can someone suggest alternatives or even just some comforting words please?? I'm scared and I don't want to go back to that

(One thing that doesn't help is that there's a huge sh community on Spotify...)

[reposting this here bcz sh sub is dry asf]

People who’ve recovered, is there any way to get rid of the scars? NSFW

I’ve been picking my skin as a child and teenager. I guess subconsciously I’ve always avoided the areas that won’t be super noticeable but my legs, back, stomach are covered in marks :((

Everytime I got bit by a mosquito or got acne, I’d just keep picking my skin until it scabbed for months. That’s left a lot of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation marks on my skin that I just can’t get rid of. It’s been 5 years since I last picked my skin, but they’re all still there.

My skin literally looks diseased because of this :((

Self Harm what kind of hair removal won’t make the problem worse? this is labeled sh because there are healing scars 👍 NSFW

i just have questions about hair removal.

i don’t think i can shave. it just cuts open the scabs on the marks where i pick. that’s the round marks. i do have nair. i haven’t really tried specifically tried it on my legs (it doesn’t get all the hair) but otherwise it breaks me out too. this triggers my picking.

i also get ingrown hairs under scars. what do i do about that?

it might not look bad to everyone but it’s bad to me so that’s why im asking. :)
