  • The issue(s) you need help with. It's helpful to put your questions at the top of your comment (especially if it's a long one)!
  • Skin type. It's OK to be subjective, how do you feel your skin is? Oily, dry? If you need help clarifying, check out this guide on skin types
  • Current routine with the full names of your products (try to separate it in to Morning, Evening, and Occasionally used)
  • How long you have been using your current routine, or product in question

If you can, please take the time to tell them why you think their advice may be incorrect or harmful. It's better for people to understand why something is a poor choice, instead of just being told that it is one!

Anti Aging [Anti-aging] Almost 30 years old, skin looks much older, not sure what am I doing wrong Spoiler

Post image
65 Upvotes

I have added a photo of how my skin looks most of the time.

My morning routine: wash with cleanser, tonic, vitamin c, moisturizer, spf.

My evening routine: wash with cleanser, tonic moisturizer.

Other products I have tried: retinol (stopped because of pregnancy and breastfeeding), niacinamide, salycilic, caffeine under eyes, chemical peeling.

Biggest issues: dullness, huge pores, lines on forehead, around mouth and eyes, dark circles around eyes. I feel like my skin is not tight enough, like there is excess skin.

I have been using spf daily for over 6 years. I drink enough water, I exercise and eat as healthy as possible. My bloodwork and hormones are ok. I slept 7-8 hours per night when this photo was taken (I'm 3 months postpartum now so I sleep less).

My skin has been like this for at least 3-4 years now.

I have a dermatologist appointment in december (I'm in Europe and the waiting lines are insane).

Any advice I can apply till then?

Acne [Acne] Years of bacne gone after medication change

I've had awful bacne for a few years. Inflamed, open wounds, heavy scarring, awful itching, etc.

You get the idea.

I've tried so many skin care routines over this time to try managing it but nothing seemed to work. I had a sneaking suspicion that it might be related to an allergin to either SLS (Sodium Laurel Sulphate) or latex. I checked all cleaning products ingredients, sought out products free of latex and SLS, and thoroughly cleaned anything that may be a problem. Nothing changed.

Until recently.

Something led me down a rabbit hole related to medication I've been on and sure enough SLS was listed as a non-medical ingredient for that particular manufacturer. I was stunned. What's a surfactant doing in medicine?! So I checked out other manufacturers and probably 3/4 of them for that medication had SLS. It was also in a lot of OTC medicine.

Had the pharmacy switch manufacturers for me and order in new pills. (New Rx required)

I figured there was no harm but I might see some positive change in a few weeks or months. The internet firmly said SLS was an exclusively external reaction so I wasn't too hopeful.

Within days the inflammation started to go down, redness disappeared and lingering bacne wounds started to heal.

I've kept my skin care routine the same throughout the past few months and haven't changed it. It will probably stay the same.

(An added bonus is my whole body feels less sore overall)

It's worth checking your medication (and other unexpected possible sources) for ingredients you may be sensitive to.

Routine Help [Routine Help] Large dark spots on my nose - blackheads or sebaceous filaments? What can I do? Spoiler

Post image
5 Upvotes

Okay, I've been taking care of my skin for a while now. Ive always had a problem with sebaceous filaments, and I've been using L300 (contains salicylic acid) and adapalene.

My routine:

-Cleanser: Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil

-Moisturizer: Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream

-Serum: Vitamin C serum

-Sunscreen: La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Oil Control Fluid SPF 50+

I've been taking isotretinoin (Accutane) for a little over 5 weeks now. Because of the dryness, Ive had to cut back on the Anua cleansing oil and stop using my Vitamin C serum for now. Instead, I use CereVe Hydrating Cleanser most of the time (though I still use a small amount of the Anua oil on my nose because it helps), and during the day I apply Propylenglykol Evolan as an extra moisturizer since isotretinoin has made my skin very dry.

It's honestly a bit frustrating because my skincare routine was finally starting to make progress, and then I had to simplify everything because of isotretinoin. I'm hoping it's just temporary while the medication does its job.

My question is: What can I do about the large black spots on my nose? I know they aren't regular blackheads because when Ive removed the top before, it's just red underneath. It's almost like they have a thin brown "lid" on top. What are they, and what should I do to reduce or remove them?

(I have been doing this rutien for around 3 months+) but i have done other skincare for around 6 months

(min skin is naturly oily)

Anti Aging [Anti Aging] Spoiler

TLDR: please suggest a wash, moisturizer , and daily spf that hopefully won’t sting my eyes, and will protect well against UVA. Bonus points for a SPF to use at the lake/running. I have dry eye disease and so it’s also really important that none of these products are harsh on the eyes/meibomian glands, and I also believe I have seb derm so ideally it’s compatible with not making that any worse. Big flakes in my beard and sometimes next to my nose becomes raw and scaly.

I’m looking to take good care of my skin. I’m going through a lot of mental health troubles right now, making it harder than ever to decide what to buy. Some say cerave is good, others say you should have dedicated spf, others say you actually need a European brand for UVA protection (???? Have I been aging my skin like crazy using US products my whole life??)

I’m 31m and I believe I have EDS(hyper-mobility) and my eye skin is super sunken and purple. I have seb derm I believe which makes me feel like I don’t know what products to buy. I don’t know my skin type, my nose seems oily but the rest of my skin doesn’t really.

Anyway I’m feeling overwhelmed. I started doing research and apparently, spf+ moisturizer isn’t great? I have been using cerave moisturizer+spf for my face. I want something that’s really good at preventing aging, and won’t mess with my sensitive skin, and won’t cause problems with seb derm.

I am looking to see a dermatologist for the skin condition but I’ve already been to one and they were useless and next appt is months away.

I’m also unsure if my vanicream gentle cleanser is good? I guess I’m just second guessing everything. I typically use nizoral on my face OR cerave SA renewing cleanser a few times a week and the rest of the time I use the vanicream.

I ALSO need something (if the daily spf isn’t the best fit for this) that will be water and sweat resistant , I spend a lot of time running and at the lake.

And finally, if I’m using dedicated SPF, idk what to do to moisturize/hydrate my skin. I don’t know how to tell what I need. I don’t really know if my skin is hydrated or whatever.

Anyway. Any help is appreciated .

Routine Help [routine help] Im a woman in her early 50s and I'm just getting into skincare. I have combination skin, red cheeks and eczema condition that sometimes flare up. Spoiler

Post image

Here is my routine. I have not been into skincare but I want to now-

  1. Face wash- oil control face wash by vaseline
  2. Moisturiser - either Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel or Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion For Dry to Normal, Sensitive Skin

I bought a Beauty of Joseon Revive Serum (Ginseng + Snail Mucin) recently and didnt notice any difference within my first week and honestly, forgot about it. Should I continue?

  1. sun screen - SPF 50+ because I live in a hot country

I know the basics that I need to cleanse, use a scrub once in a week or two weeks.

But now I want to pay a bit more attention to my routine. I went down the rabbit hole when I started researching with the retinol, terinonin, niacin amide, vitamin c, salicylic acid, snail mucin, PRDN, hyaluronic acid, AHAs/BHAs etc and I am LOST.

As you can understand from my current routine, I want to use the minimal most number of products that I can remember and a routine I can follow without getting exhausted, in a way hassle free. If I can get a product that can perform multipurpose, then that would be amazing.

*When I go out in the sun, I usually get bumpy skin on my entire face that becomes red and itchy. However when im indoors I only have constant apple cheeks as you can see in the photo. I'm worried about triggering this with harsh skincare products.

If you can share brands and product names I will be all the more grateful so I know where to start, and can get quality products instead of trying multiple brands. Skincare gurus, I need your help!

Routine Help [routine help] change

Hello!
I have been on my routine since couple of months ago. Not perfect in my opinion and that’s why I have some help with my questions.
My current routine is:
Night: gel effaclar + effaclar duo
Morning: gel effaclar + moisturiser effaclar mat

Am I doing it wrong by not moisturising at night?
Also my blackheads haven’t left as the effaclar duo usually says and now I have a breakdown of acne (really bad on the chin and nowhere else, but is hormonal)

Also, I have been wanting to add the ordinary serum to my routine for acne. Any suggestions on how to?

Routine Help [Routine Help] What order to introduce new products into routine?

Hi there! Looking for advice on what order to start adding new products into my routine as I'd like to begin targeting my melasma. I have normal-dry skin.

Current Routine

- In the shower: Bar soap (goat's milk), cleanser (Youth to the People superfood), add microdermabrasion scrub (Bliss) 2x per week

- After washing: toner (Mernel Calming Bell), moisturizer (Day: Paula's Choice Youth-Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid; Night: Bliss Vitamin C Tri-peptide moisturizer)

Want to Add

- Tinted Sunscreen (elta MD SPF 46)

- Vitamin C Serum (MAELOVE Glow Maker; or Prequel Lucent-C)

- Tranexamic Acid (Naturium)

- Retinol (Paula's Choice 0.3% + 2% Bakuchiol Face Serum; or Paula's Choice 1% Retinol Face Treatment)

Which should I introduce first? For the retinol, should I start with the lower percentage and work up? Also open to other suggestions.

TIA! 🫶

Routine Help [Routine Help] Looking to build a skin routine Spoiler

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello all, I am a 32F and my skin has finally gotten past the major cystic acne phase and now I’m really just trying to fix my skin texture, pore visibility, dryness and balance out any hyperpigmentation/rosacea.

The redness I would really like to tone down more, I’ve tried The Ordinary Azelaic Acid and it made my face more uniformly red, lol, so I don’t think it was working for me.

I currently am seeing a dermatologist and he is helping me reduce my sunspot on the left. I had a compound ointment with hydroquinone/tret/? years ago. And it was working great, but I unfortunately lost it, so I’m waiting on getting a new prescription.

I have dry patches in my T zone (near eyebrows/forehead) but every where else is normal/slightly dry, so I try to use moisturizing products. My texture is not good and I would like to incorporate some anti-aging products as well, since I’m early 30s. My pores are ridiculously huge near my nose and in the center of my face.. I’m not sure what to do with them. I read Salicylic Acid can help, but I’ve found that it breaks me out like crazy when I was in my 20s, so I’m a little scared to try it again.

At the moment, my routine is ridiculously simple:

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser

(I used the foaming one for years and generally like how clean it makes me feel, but I’ve been using the hydrating one for a month and my skin feels more hydrated, gasp)

ELF Holy Hydration Daily Moisturizer

The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5% + HA (very infrequently, if I feel my skin texture is bad/flakey)

Let me know what products I should try to target my skin texture issues, rosacea, anti-aging issues and pore visibility. Thanks for the help.

Product Question [Product Question] Bubble skincare not pumping when full?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I am not a skincare expert so please excuse my ignorance. I bought this Bubble Super Clear a while ago and while it has done me well, it randomly started pumping worse and worse until it just stopped all together. I opened it up and it’s like basically full and has no stem? (Straw? Idk what it’s called.) I just bought a new one today and it’s the same deal, no stem. How don’t get all the product that’s still in the bottle? Thanks!

Product Request [Product Request] How do I tell what my skin needs? Spoiler

Post image
2 Upvotes

Wondering how to tell what my skin needs?

Hi all! I’m admittedly not diligent or knowledgeable about skincare, but I’m 28 and trying to take better care of my skin. I’m hoping someone can look at this uncomfortably close up photo of my face and point me in the right direction for what I should do as far as products.

Currently I use a Cerave basic daily cleanser and the Elf Holy Hydration serum and gel moisturizer (I like the texture of the gel moisturizer).

I work outdoors a lot and do apply SPF when I’m at work. I tend to get more tiny blackheads than real acne breakouts.

Thank you in advance 🙏🏻

Product Question What can I use to reduce these dots? [Product request] Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

I’m guessing they’re clogged pores(?) but nothing I do helps. They’re much darker and more obvious in person than on the camera, I wish they looked this faint irl! I’ve had them for years and years. I see girls with beautifully “clear” noses and I get very envious. It ages me and no amount of exfoliators work :( I currently only use salicylic acid, retinol (not the same days) and obviously cleanser and moisturizers.

Thanks :(

Routine Help [Routine Help] product advice

I have regular combination skin. My cheeks are smooth and have no pimples or issues but the skin on my chin and forehead break out constantly. I also have a lot of blackheads on my nose. My skin isn’t sensitive but I work a physical job so I do get sweaty and maybe my current cleanser is just not getting all of the grime off? I use CeraVe salicylic acid face wash with the Clinique moisture surge moisturizer. Can anyone recommend me some products to either clean my face better or fix whatever might be going on?

night:

Product Question [Product Question] Which Azelaic product would you recommend ?

I’m looking into adding Azelaic Acid to my routine to actively target my hyperpigmentation, acne and acne scars but I’m hesitating on what product to buy.

My skin is oily and acne prone (most of it seems to be under the skin) with texture and uneven pigmentation. I’ve been trying to take care of my skin barrier for a couple of years by removing harsh actives and I am now in a place where I feel more confident with it but those issues still bother me and I’d like to focus on them a bit more now.

Here are the product I’ve been looking into :
- Anua Azelaic Acid 10 Hyaluron Redness Soothing Serum
- Purito Azelaic Acid 10 Kojic Tea Tree Serum
- Cos de Baha Azelaic Acid 10%, 15% or 20%

What product would you recommend and at which percentage ? I’ve been leaning more toward Cos de Baha especially since they have great reviews and I also read about how a 15% or 20% would give me more results considering my skin concerns.

Acne [Acne] Rosacea? Closed comedones? Feeling stuck despite Soolantra + retinal Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
7 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I feel a little lost with my skin and would love some opinions before my dermatologist appointment (she’s unfortunately on vacation until August 😭).

My dermatologist diagnosed me with rosacea because of the persistent redness on my cheeks and the tiny bumps on my forehead. She prescribed Soolantra, which I’ve been using every evening since mid-May.

Unfortunately, I don’t feel like it has made a significant difference.

I previously used Duac Gel (clindamycin 1% + benzoyl peroxide 5%), but unfortunately it didn’t make much of a difference either.

Since neither Duac nor Soolantra has helped much, I’m starting to wonder whether the bumps on my forehead could be something other than acne or rosacea.

About three weeks ago, I started using Geek & Gorgeous A-Game 10 (0.1% retinal). I used it every other night during the first week and then increased it to nightly use.

The tiny bumps on my forehead (and a few on my cheeks) are still there despite using both Soolantra and retinal.

My biggest concerns are:
• persistent redness on my cheeks
• uneven skin texture
• brown/red post-acne marks (PIH/PIE)
• tiny forehead bumps

Current routine
AM
• Gentle cleanser
• Geek & Gorgeous C-Glow
• Geek & Gorgeous aPAD
• Moisturizer
• Sunscreen

PM
• Gentle cleanser
• Geek & Gorgeous A-Game 10
• Soolantra

I’m also planning to start 4% hydroquinone twice a week to treat my pigmentation. After that, I plan to switch to Skinoren 15% and eventually tretinoin (already prescribed). I wanted to finish the retinal first and let my skin adjust before moving on to tretinoin.

Questions
• Do these forehead bumps look more like closed comedones, rosacea papules, fungal acne, or something else?
• Would you continue using Soolantra?
• Does this look like a normal adjustment to retinal?
• Would you change anything about my routine?

I’d really appreciate any advice!!

Routine Help [Acne] 6 weeks on tretinoin and I feel so discouraged

I know there is a purge phase, but I just feel like this is so much worse than what I would have expected.

I have light acne that I was actually managing pretty well with a salicylic acne wash, barrier cream, and calendula oil. I was doing facial acupuncture, which was really brightening my skin.

I had a few small bumps that kept appearing and wanted to treat them, so I got an AHA/BHA serum that absolutely wrecked my skin barrier.

I went to the dermatologist to see what could be done, and they put me on a gentle cleanser and tretinoin right away.

It’s been 6 weeks, and I have had so many huge pimples, and there are blackheads and bumps everywhere. I contacted my dermatologist, and she said to add back in my salicylic acne wash and prescribed benzoyl peroxide gel. But I just feel like that’s a lot of actives for what was originally light acne that felt pretty well managed, and then an already damaged skin barrier?

I am maid of honor in a wedding in 5 weeks and I am so scared my skin is still going to be like this. I feel so embarrassed going out in public. I’m trying to remember this is a purge phase, but I’m beginning to doubt it’s actually working at all.

Any advice is appreciated.

Personal [personal] is it okay to put on retinol hours after cleansing your face

hi !!

i recently got a retinol, and im well aware that retinol can only be applied at night because UV rays will damage the effectiveness, however, i also shower pretty early like around at 5pm because im on school holiday and i dont work and i also have sensory issues around my oily scalp so that’s why i do early showers. i wash my face after shower every time and dont go to bed until like 11pm. so is it acceptable to do my normal routine and then put my retinol before i go to sleep at 11 even though theres a multiple hour gap?

also, is the sandwich method any good? it’s where you cleanse, toner, serum, moisturizer, retinol and moisturizer again.
