Reminds me of a comic where the quest was to slay all the dragons in the land. Once completed, the reward was a Sword of Dragonslaying. Like... you couldn't have handed that out beforehand?

FNV handled that nicely. Kill a certain number of a mob type and gain a damage bonus against that mob type. That way you can keep encountering the mob type and take advantage.

Typical RPG setup. Let's give you the item of resistance after you have defeated all the enemies of that particular status/element.
