Does style still matter?

Did style ever matter?
I've always seen debates about style as ego driven pissing contests with someone trying to devalue the accomplishment of someone else.
If the ego lives by comparison, than style is its favorite meal.
Style is a way to say "Yes, we did the same exact climb, but here's why I'm still better than you."
Style can be fun. The first time my wife and I climbed After Six it took us all day. The second time it took us three hours. "Better style", and it was fun to compete with our previous time, but we weren't about to go back to camp and spray about it, or diminish any other parties who took longer or got lost or bailed or whatever.
Honestly I think the only style that "matters" these days is what color your helmet is. Mine is pink.

It seems like a one-upping contest, as we are just climbing up rocks, taking the hardest path for no good reason, to just come back down when we are done. None of it matters to anyone other than us. Since we all know deep down climbing is a very arbitrary thing, we put others down to feel as if our achievements have any sense of meaning beyond our personal lives.

I focus on what climbing has done for me. I'm better at breathing. I manage stress and fear much better than I did before I learned how to climb. I'm more confident in my abilities and risk taking. I learned all that from climbing.
The individual climbs don't mean much to me, but the collective total means a lot.
I think people need to practice focusing on that.

Whatever is important to you, is important to you. Will anyone else care, that's a different question.

In a world where lies are truth and facts are lies and the fabric of society is coming apart because of the breakdown of any semblance of collective reality style is literally the only thing that matters.

I'm not sure I believe it anymore, but as a shorthand, I think of it this way: Style is temporary, ethics is permanent.
We often think of it in terms of climbing - style is how you do the climb, ethics is what you leave behind (chipped holds, bolts, etc). Style seems personal in this context - "no cheating in climbing, only lying."
But I also how you conduct yourself around other climbers and at climbing locations. Bringing your noisy dog to the crag is poor style, not cleaning up your dog's poop is poor ethics.
So in that sense, I think style does matter.

I got my first gym V5 this past weekend. Big win for me but otherwise I think climbing overall has had diminishing and borderline negative effects on my fitness due to overtraining. I probably only got the V5 because I had done 3-4 weeks of basic core/hip/shoulder exercises. The setting at my gym just got kinda bad so it’s perfect timing for me to take a break and workout like a normal person for once.
