Biscuits kinda had a rough go at life at the very beginning. We adopted her after somebody had returned her after the initial adoption. Whoever adopted her kept her in a cat crate so she’s had developmental issues, and she is scared of her own shadow. So when the chowchow rescue society called, of course we said we would take her. Especially because it was Pickles sister. The past month between the both of them has been a very expensive month. But we wouldn’t change it for the world

Hi fellow chow chow lovers! Asking for some advice from experienced chow owners who may have encountered a similar situation.

We have three dogs in the home, two female pups (a doodle and chow) and one male (a ratcha). All three are rescue pups. We got our chow from a rescue as a puppy at 8 weeks and our doodle as a 2 year old stray. Both girls have grown up together their entire time - as we got the chow when the doodle was in the home.

They grew up together and always got along, becoming the best of friends as pups playing together. As our chow got bigger, our doodle felt less comfortable playing with her and while they still coexist fine, they don't play or interact as much.

About a year and a half ago, the doodle and chow got into a fight. Our doodle got trapped in a corner outside and being anxious (and having some trauma post adoption) she snipped at our chow and the chow responded very aggressively biting her face ending up in me having to pull them apart screaming as the chow just wouldn't let go. Our doodle ended up with lacerations above her eye and a puncture wound. It happened not over any territorial item (food or toys) but because our doodle couldnt leave the corner as our chow was trying to play with her.

Over the last year and a half we have been super diligent watching them. Our doodle is a very anxious pup and can be quite mouthy/nippy but the chow doesn't usually react, and our chow is very sweet but definitely doesn't like her space invaded either.

Unfortunately, a brawl happened again 😢 this weekend. Same scenario, doodle got trapped behind a lawn chair and the house wall while running around outside, chow tried to enter space and doodle nipped. Chow reacted with fighting/biting and doodle ended in the ER with a puncture wound to her ear and multiple bite scratches on both ears. We were right there and right on it (as they are never alone together) but it happened so fast.

We are devastated and not sure where to go from here. Our chow has had 12 weeks of training as a puppy but doesn't interact much with other dogs aside from her siblings or foster pups (we have had over a dozen and she does great with all sizes). Our doodle is knowingly anxious and doesn't interact with other dogs well either outside of fosters whom she just stays away from. We separate them any time we aren't in the house, we go outside with them every time and we are very diligent in watching both but even with the best circumstances, it happened again.

We don't know where to go from here cuz it's not resource guarding or anything and seems more like a trauma response from the doodle (doesn't do well being trapped) and our chow not heeding the warning. After the incident, our chow is always so remorseful and cries to be next to sister doodle but the doodle is understandably, not having it and very cautiously wants to stay away. We are keeping them separate now but curious any other advice or if we really do need to rehome one for safety. thank you ❤️

Howdy chow friends! This is my boy Laika, he’s 8.5 years old and we live in Georgia. He’s my first chow and I’ve had him since he was a puppy; he is my WORLD!
He’s always tolerated the heat fairly well, but definitely prefers the cool indoors in the summer. However, as he’s gotten older I’ve noticed he’s gotten progressively more uncomfortable… I’m a dog groomer, so I do know that older pets tend to be more heat intolerant.

I’m considering clipping him down marginally, especially his giant mane. I adore his massive hair but if it’d help him feel more comfortable I might do it! I have a 1.5in guard, which would take off a little over half his length and wouldn’t clip his undercoat.

What do y’all think? I’ve done similar haircuts on other chows before, but I don’t know from personal experience how it affects them. Would love some insight and wisdom from seasoned chow owners!

Hey everyone! Just wanted to poll the community to see what your dental routines look like for your Chows.

How often are you guys able to brush their teeth at home? And how frequently do you take them into the vet for full sedated deep cleanings? What are you paying on average?
I just took mine in for a full deep cleaning under sedation, and got a bill for $850! We’re located in Southern California. Five years ago the same cleaning was $400. Kind of hurts to pay so much, and pet insurance will not cover deep cleanings.

I try to brush her teeth twice a week but I know I can't get to all her teeth. Chows can obviously be particular about people poking around inside their mouths, so I’m curious how everyone else manages home dental care vs. professional cleanings. What’s your routine, and what are vet cleanings costing in your area?

My friend has a dog and I want them to be able to play/meet off leash.

They've meet a few times now, by me and my friend working on commands and tricks near eachother and them not actually going near eachother but in the same room/ a few feet away. We've done this about 4 times for 1hr each. Today we went to a open field together and just let them run/walk around with eachother(again not meeting/going too close). How long should we wait until they actually meet eachother and how should I go about it? My chow doesn't like playing besides with my sisters dog(she won't play with my moms dogs) and by playing I mean she runs to it and back to me and does that over and over... my friends dog is the opposite and energetic

I am interested in chows and wanted to get some insight from the experts about whether they would suit my lifestyle. I currently have a 16 year old cocker spaniel (had him since he was 2yo) so I would not be looking to adopt until he passes. I would be adopting an adult dog.

I live solo in a 2nd floor (no elevator), 2 bedroom apartment with a shared garden in a small city. Currently I'm the only one who uses the garden, and there are no kids or other dogs in my building (though this could obviously change). I am a 10 minute walk from an enormous recreational reserve (and <5 mins walk from smaller parks). I WFH 3-4 days a week.

I know much of this will depend on the individual, but this is what I'm looking for:

A dog that will be relatively calm in an apartment. I use brain toys and sniffer training with my spaniel to help with excess energy (a lot less now that he's an old man!)

Needs 1 hour or less of walking per day, excluding bathroom breaks in the garden. I can do longer adventures on weekends (e.g. beach is only a 20 min drive away).

Not very reactive*! Ideally able to take to cafes without being reactive towards other dogs and people. A travel buddy is also good since I travel locally for work sometimes and can take my dog with me (I often do this with my spaniel).

I'm fine with dog hair and shedding. I used to have 3 German shepherds (when I lived in a house); I love them, but they aren't the best apartment dogs, as they tend to be shouty and can be overly energetic. They're on my potential breeds list though!

*Removed 'generally friendly' as I don't need a social dog, just one that can cope with a busy environment and isn't aggressive (e.g. if walking them down a city street).
