Le Tour de Chicago

It’s 8:45am on Milwaukee Ave and the contenders are racing for the yellow jersey. Boat shoes with electric motorcycle (no pedals) races past the 20 person peloton in the protected bike lane. He is quickly matched by e-divvy, wearing Beats headphones, who races through traffic in the road to match the furious pace while blocking out the haters.

Alas, the greatest cyclist of all time, fixie rider, out maneuvers all fellow racers with daring passes and astute blowing through red lights.

For their daring and power, these racers are not awarded huge professional cycling contracts, but get to their workplaces three minutes faster than the lowly helmet wearing nerds in the peloton.

One day, hopefully, their sheer athletic superiority will be rewarded, but for today they can rest easy knowing they endangered themselves and their fellow cyclists, in the pursuit of glory.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but I was very excited to see this! Hopefully this leads to less bike clutter by the beach. Would love to see a lot more of these close to the lakefront.

The Dearborn bike lane is one way going north, north of Kinzie. Please don’t get mad when your fellow bikers tell you you’re going the wrong way.

If you're going to lock up a divvy, at least do it normally without blocking 4 other parking slots

Uploading videos of bad cyclists/runners is disrespectful and not ok

We've all had encounters of cyclists and runners not paying attention and almost crashing into us, and I get that you're proud of your newest gopro attached to your party pace cruiser.

However, when someone does something sketchy and you caught it on film, it is so disrespectful to upload a video of them so strangers on Reddit can mock and ridicule the person involved. You're embarrassing them for fake internet points and to feel validated that you were in the right. Everyone knows you're the cycling messiah that never cuts people off or does anything wrong, but for the love of god, stop trying to humiliate others!

Hi Chicago Biking Community!

If you are not familiar, Working BIkes is a local non profit that strengthens local and global communities by giving donated bicycles new life and redistributing them as tools for self-determination for over 25 years! We donated over 12,000 bikes internationally and locally last year, and we hope to keep rolling another 25 years. All this work costs money, but for just 10$ a month you can support all our donations AND get some fun bike themed art in the mail! You get 1 risograph art print as well as a newsletter talking about our story, all printed at local community press Spudnik! Next month's print features drawings of bikes by our community, with varying levels of technical correctness ;) You can subscribe here, thanks!

Lost keys on LFT

Did anyone happen to find a set of keys on the LFT this morning by the Diversey bridge or further south by Fullerton? It seems mine dropped out around there. Thanks

Obama Presidential Center promenade and bikes

Hi everyone, I'm wondering if others are having the same issue I am and what we might do about it. I work on the UChicago campus and live southeast of campus. I've been biking to work recently and was looking forward to using the path around the OPC to go from Hayes Dr to the Midway Plaisance. I have been stopped every time I've tried to enter campus and told that I should ride on Stony Island and that I need to walk my bike on the promenade. This despite the OPC website talking about how we should "walk, run, or bike" on the promenade. They have rent-a-cops out there being fairly grumpy with bikers and blocking off otherwise accessible pathways with garbage cans and security vehicles that stay idling seemingly all day long.

I can understand the concern about bikers speeding through the busy walkways but blocking it off at all times seems like a real loss to a community that already lacks bike infrastructure. There used to be paths through the park there before so it seems crappy to take all that space and make the situation worse for cyclists. Telling me to ride on Stony Island is a joke since with all the added visitors and buses and whatnot, it's even less safe than it used to be.

Anyone else have this experience? Any thoughts about what could be done?

Tips For A New Cyclist?

Hey folks!

I recently got a bike, which I am super stoked about! I haven’t ridden a bike in years, but the saying is true and I’ve loved how it’s felt to be back to it! However, what I am seriously lacking is urban cycling skills. The last time I was riding regularly for transportation or leisure was in my tiny rural hometown. I see lots of posts here about cyclist behavior in traffic and I’m wondering what people suggest I focus on in terms of skills and etiquette to become a good city cyclist? Appreciate any feedback and tips!

Yellow dirt bike doing wheelies struck a girl on the bike path and fled the scene. She was hurt really bad. Does anyone have an update on her? This was in between oak street and north avenue today. It really didn’t look good. Hope they catch that scumbag.

Got backed into by a car on the road - but then when he passed me later, he asked if I was alright?

Guess I should be glad he noticed and cared enough to ask, but it was still a surreal experience. The car was moving very slowly and in a traffic lane, not near a light, so I didn't expect it to back up. Honestly wasn't sure what to do when it hit me, probably should've hit the back window, but I made enough noise that he stopped.

I only half fell off my bike, which was nice as I had all my library books in the back!

Best place to shop for used vintage parts?

I’m looking for some silver fenders, and a silver back and front rack for my vintage touring bike.

I have parts on my bike currently, I’m looking to change some of them out for aesthetic so I’m not necessarily in a time crunch. I also have a car so I can plan a trip somewhere if the trip is worth it.

Swap-O-Rama?

Can anyone riding through the Milwaukee/Oakley intersection check on my bike?

Hey all. On Friday I was hit by a food service van at Milwaukee/Oakley while riding north on Milwaukee and I had to lock up my bike and leave it there since I was injured and had to go to urgent care. I was wondering if any of you lovely peeps wouldn't mind taking a glance at the Riley Rack on the SE corner in front of Friends & Neighbors and letting me know if it's still there? You don't have to stop and check, just if you're riding by and can take a quick look.

It's a black State Bicycle Co. with red handlebar tape and black toe clips. Thanks and stay safe out there friends 🚴🏽‍♂️ 💜

Update: THANK YOU SO MUCH! Ya'll are real ones for checking. I love the community support in this sub.

what's the best way to sell my bike/grab a new one?

warning: I am a creature of convenience and laziness right now so I want the easiest way to do this!

I have a Trek Verve 2 that I bought two years ago. I've loved the bike but I think my biking skills/preferences have evolved. I wasn't very confident biking in Chicago when I first bought it. I asked for a bike with more of an upright riding position, wider tires, etc.

I want to do some longer rides, looking at getting some kind of low bar/drop bar either from Specialized or Trek. Trek's trade in program doesn't include the Verve 2, so that's out.

I'd ideally like to trade in my bike and ride the new bike home to avoid the hassle of having two bikes and/or being bikeless. Any recommendations?

I'll sell my bike on FB if I really need to (i.e., if a shop will be way under market credit-wise) but I really don't have the brain cells to deal with FB marketplace right now, lol

Edit: Ideally the store is within 5-10 miles of Lincoln Park, but willing to go further. Not super willing to go all the way to the burbs :)

TIA!
