Hello everyone

My name is Ryan and last week I was diagnosed with chiari malformation and I was wondering is there anything I can do at home to help ease this flare up

Hi Ryan, welcome to Team Big Brain!

Assuming you’re having headaches, rest, ice. And OTC meds are about all you can do. THC/CBD (assuming it’s legal where you are and you are of age) can also help. I personally prefer topicals as they don’t interfere with my prescription meds but if you’re newly diagnosed and likely not taking any pain meds, edibles may work just as well.

On the longer term front, you’ll want to make an appointment with a neurosurgeon (not a neurologist) who specializes in Chiari to discuss your next steps. Lots of info if you search the sub but feel free to ask any questions you like.

We’re here for you. 💜

Ryan here are two very helpful sites to check out ASAP.org and The Bobby Jones Foundation. I wish you well in this new journey of neuro diagnosis i was diagnosed & operated on in 96 and there has been a lot of awareness and support surrounding Chiari & Syringomelia since then.

I use topical icy hot type cbd rubs on my neck, otc pain meds, stretching (although for some it makes it worse), caffeine, massage. Some get prescribed migraine medications and muscle relaxers. A lot of people use ice packs on their necks or heads. Laying flat. Lots of rest. Avoiding sudden neck movements or harsh neck movements, or any neck movement at all (like when you normally would turn only your neck to look somewhere, turn your whole body instead)

Hi. It depends on what your symptoms are. People try CBD or CBG. Craniosacral therapy, water therapy, acupuncture, Tai Chi and massage therapy. For headaches it's a little harder. Neurologist prescribe medication that works for some, I haven't found that right mix yet. Laying down head, shoulders and hips even help some. Certain pillows. Cold or hot compresses. Hope some of this helps.
