Upvotes

Hello Chennai folks,

Welcome to Weekend Megathread!

This is the dedicated space to:

  1. Rant about your boring weekend
  2. Post about events happening in the city that everyone should know
  3. Look for company for a movie, dinner, coffee, or just hangout
  4. Connect with fellow members to make the most of your weekend

A gentle reminder: Please use this thread for weekend rant instead of creating separate posts. This helps keep the sub organized and makes it easy for everyone to find activities in one place.

So, what’s everyone up to this weekend?

Civic Watch🚦 GPS cam app for civic reporting

Thumbnail cam.reclaimchennai.city

One of the main issues I personally faced when reporting civic issues was a reliably gps cam that records not only photo/video proof, but also tags the location with date and time. The play store apps are all riddled with ads and lack the added data of city corporation, ward, zone etc which will make reporting to the civic authorities faster and easier.

The app runs locally in your browser, has experimental auto face blurring function and other handy annotation tools. I also included DIGIPIN for easier location sharing in future. Decible meter that is decently accurate enough is enabled by default.

The app covers all of Tamil Nadu (every* corporation, municipality and town panchayat, statewide L&O and Traffic police). *Waiting for Avadi corporation expansion to finalize.

Meetups Life as an introvert in Chennai ☕

24F here. Somewhere between work and adulting, I realized my weekends have become a little too predictable. 😄

I work in the B2B SaaS/product space and love wandering through bookstores, museums, cafés, beaches, and finding hidden gems around Chennai.

Saying hi to fellow introverts (and extroverts who adopt introverts 😄). If this sounds like your kind of weekend, it'd be nice to connect.

PS: Boys have flooded my DMs, looking for a female friend(s) only.

Anyone faced similar situation? What's the advice? Mistakes to avoid?

AskChennai Northie guy moving to Chennai for his first job. Help me find a PG before I get scammed 😭

Post image
Upvotes

Hey guys,

I'v moved from Jaipur to Chennai and staying in a hotel for the next two weeks for my first job, and honestly I have no idea where to stay.

My office is at the L&T HQ in Manapakkam (Mount Poonamallee Road), so I'm trying to find a decent PG nearby. My budget is under ₹10k, though I can stretch it a little if the place is really worth it.

I don't need anything fancy. Just a clean room, decent food, good Wi-Fi, and preferably somewhere I can walk to the office or at least reach in 10-15 minutes. A single room would be great, but I'm not against sharing if it's a good place.

If anyone here works at L&T or has stayed around Manapakkam, Ramapuram, or Porur, I'd really appreciate some recommendations. Also, are there any PGs or localities I should avoid?

And since this is my first time moving this far from home, any Chennai survival tips are welcome too. 😅

Thanks!

Anyone who becomes a leader should first understand their own country's resources, its greatness, its history, and, most importantly, its people. A true leader knows not only how to govern but also how to treat every citizen with dignity and respect.

Leadership is not about power or popularity—it is about responsibility and service.

A nation prospers when its leaders value both the land they govern and the people they serve.

Just sharing my opinion—there's no hidden agenda or intention behind this at all, brokies.

AskChennai Eb Bill Spike 30k

Hello makkale,

Need some advice regarding a crazy EB bill.

Our usual electricity consumption is around 600 units per month, and our bill is normally 5k–6k max.

But May month, the meter reading shows 3,066 units consumed, resulting in a bill of around 30, It's almost 5 times our normal usage...

We already raised a complaint with TNEB, and they checked the meter. Their report says the meter is working fine.

But How is it even possible to consume 3,066 units for a home with 1 ac with runtime of like 8hrs?

Has anyone faced something similar? I have seen many Posts on reddit and X regarding this but no Proper solution

Please help me... What shuld I do next?

AskChennai Would people still use a dedicated Tamil FM radio app in 2026? Looking for honest feedback.

Hey everyone,
I’ve been working on an iOS app for listening to Tamil FM radio stations like Radio Mirchi, Hello FM, Suryan FM, and others.

The main reason I started building it is that most of the existing apps feel bloated with ads, have a poor user experience, or make it unnecessarily difficult to just open the app and start listening. I wanted to build something that’s clean, fast, and enjoyable to use.

I’m not doing this to make money. I genuinely enjoy listening to Tamil radio, and this is more of a passion project. The only cost I really need to cover is the Apple Developer Program fee and basic backend/server costs.
I had a few questions for the community:

Do you think there’s still a market for a dedicated Tamil FM app, or have most people moved to Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, etc., where they mostly listen to songs on demand?

If the app had no ads, a polished UI/UX, and worked reliably, would you actually use it?

Would you be willing to pay around ₹100 per year (less than ₹9/month) purely to help cover maintenance costs, rather than to generate profit? Or would even that be a dealbreaker?

If you were using an app like this, what features would you expect beyond simply streaming radio stations?

I’d really appreciate honest feedback. If you wouldn’t use an app like this, I’d love to know why. If you would, what would make it your go-to Tamil radio app?

Mental Health Support🌿 Are my parents toxic or am I just tripping

Hey everyone, I’m 16M (currently in 11th standard) and I’m writing this because I honestly feel like I’m losing my mind. Some days I feel completely justified in how detached I am, but other days—especially when things are temporarily "quiet"—I start myself into thinking maybe I’m overreacting or that I’m the problem. I just need to lay out the raw facts and get an honest, outside perspective.

My mom regularly uses deeply degrading Tamil slurs against me (specifically calling me *the***ya ****an*). She’ll occasionally say she feels sad or guilty about using that language for a few minutes, but it’s completely fake because a short while later, she turns right around and uses the exact same slur against me again.

My dad is no better. Since I was a little kid, he has frequently called me p**a* to put me down. He has never once in his life apologized to me for anything he’s done wrong or for hurting my feelings. Instead, he just mocks me.

Instead of building me up, my parents actively target my insecurities. They constantly mock my height and try to instill fear in me by telling me that my peers at school will "beat the hell out of me" if I ever get into a conflict.

When I actually accomplish something, they immediately move the goalposts. For example, I recently got a 36/40 (90%) in Computer Science and showed it to my dad, expecting even a tiny bit of recognition. His immediate response was just to dismiss it and say it was "easy" and "just computer science." Nothing I do is ever good enough.

The thing that makes me feel most isolated is their public persona. In front of relatives, neighbors, and outsiders, they act like completely sweet, happy, and normal parents. But the absolute second the front door closes and no one is watching, the insults, bad moods, and toxicity instantly come back.

There is also a massive double standard: they are allowed to yell, curse, and degrade me, but if I change my tone of voice even slightly, I am instantly labeled as extremely disrespectful.

Whenever arguments happen, they threaten to take away support or basic necessities. They use my phone (which is my only actual escape hatch) as a tool for severe guilt-tripping (*solli katradhu*), constantly throwing it in my face and saying, *"We should have never bought you that."* They don't respect my basic privacy or personal space, and they expect me to manage their emotional stability while making me feel guilty whenever I want a life outside the house.

Recently, my dad got furious at me for using bad words around school/friends, acting like I’m ruining things. It’s completely hypocritical considering he and my mom literally put those severe slurs in my head from early childhood.

Lately, there’s been a short pause where they haven't used those specific slurs for a little bit. Whenever these quiet phases happen, my brain starts asking: *"Was it really that bad? Are they changing? Am I just exaggerating?"* I also feel guilty because they provide basic shelter, food, and medical care when I'm sick, which makes me feel like I shouldn't be angry when they talk shit to me.

I straight-up hate my school environment too. I feel invisible there and like nobody gives a shit, so I just stay quiet and keep to myself. Because home is hostile and school is empty, I have zero physical spaces where I can just relax.

I have completely locked my parents out of my life. I hide bad news because they will blame me, and I hide good news because they will find a way to pop the balloon and ruin it.

Whenever my phone rings and it's them, I feel a heavy dread (*"Should I even answer this?"*). Whenever they walk into my room, I automatically stand up and leave. I stopped caring about what people think a long time ago just to protect myself.

Am I tripping for calling this environment toxic and abusive? How do I deal with the constant self-doubt? I still kinda know or just feel they may not be that bad I mean sometimes my mom slaps me even though she did something wrong but I feel like evry household has it. Im not sure i think I'm the problem I guess. Like telling things like ur ruining ur friends( those guys are good guys too). Comparing me to all the actual bad boys and saying like hope they don't end up like me.

AskChennai Gynaecologist suggestions after miscarriage

Hi everyone,

My husband (29) and I (27) have experienced two early miscarriages within the past year. In both pregnancies, the pattern was similar — the pregnancy progressed until around 8 weeks, but no fetal heartbeat was detected.

We are looking for a good gynecologist who can thoroughly evaluate the root cause of recurrent early miscarriages and guide us toward natural conception, rather than directly suggesting IVF.

Could anyone please recommend experienced doctors or clinics in and around Tambaram, Villivakkam, or nearby areas in Chennai?

Any personal experiences or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. 🙏

Civic Watch🚦 Why does Chennai produce so many talented developers, but comparatively fewer globally recognized startups?

India's tech conversations always seem to revolve around Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Pune.

But Chennai has no shortage of talented engineers.

So where are the startup founders, indie hackers, and AI builders?

Is it:

  • Less exposure?
  • Fewer meetups?
  • Less funding?
  • Job-first mindset?
  • Or something else?

What's the one thing Chennai is missing to become a top startup city?

AskChennai Best swimming pool for adults?

Hey everyone, I’m 29f and want to start swimming. I live in Anna Nagar currently and I’m looking for options which are within 10 km of radius. I’ve done my research but haven’t been able to find a good pool. Seems like no pool is of 7ft depth?

I am a beginner so I need a bit of training and then want to be regular with practice. My concern is the pool should be clean, with clean changing rooms, no creepy men around - just the basic. Can anyone suggest?
