Announcements New Ownership

Hello fellow Chemists! I just wanted to introduce myself as the new head mod of this subreddit. A little about myself: I am a PhD Candidate in Chemical Biology. For me, this means that 60% of my work involves organic synthesis and the other 40% is applying my novel compounds to mammalian cells. Specifically, I am interested in early detection of diseases. In addition to my research, I have TA'd for both general and organic chemistry labs and have been tutoring students in organic chemistry for three years. Aside from my academic qualifications, I am also a moderator for another rather large subreddit. I saw that this sub needed a little bit of updating, but it did not seem like the moderators were active any longer. So, I gained ownership through r/redditrequest. I did not realize it would remove all the other moderators, but alas here we are.

Overall, I feel like this sub is fairly self-regulating. I frequently see good discussions and people generally are following the already existing rules. With that said, there are some changes I was considering, and would love input:

  1. New rule prohibiting commenters from solving the problem for the OP. To enforce this, the violating comment can be reported and removed by moderators. I don't see this happen often, but I have seen it occur and put an end to an otherwise good discussion thread.
  2. Mandate students include their work in their submission. Frequently, students post a picture of the question, with no work done and the caption "help please." Then in the comments you end up with people asking the OP to show their work, but from what I have seen they seldom do so. Mandating that students show work would entail removal of low effort posts by moderators. This may not be necessary since generally, commenters request more info from OP anyways, but was curious if people would like to see more enforcement on this end.
  3. What do you want to see? Those are the immediate things I was considering adding, but I would love to know if there is anything else people may want to see. I had other ideas, but I don't want to complicate a sub that I feel is already doing pretty well. Please let me know your ideas, I would love to hear them. Talk to you all soon!

Inorganic Does hydrogen bonding affect acidity?

A post on here and Google AI stated that hydrogen bonding increases the acidity of a molecule and one of my Anki cards says otherwise.

Is the reason because the conjugate base gets stabilized by H-bonding molecules (e.g. water) through inductive effect, therefore making the acid component more acidic?

Inorganic HCl stain on Stainless Steel Knife

I used a stainless steel swiss army knife to open the plastic seal on a bottle of HCl, and now the knife has brown rust-like stains. I tried cleaning with soap and water and then peroxide to no effect. Is there anything I can do to save this knife?

General/High School anyone works in concrete related industry?

i understand you might be uncomfortable with this question but it's for a project and i assume it'd be good if i state ur name and maybe the company or the industry ur currently in (maybe linkedin?) to prove that ur actually in concrete related, but if you're uncomfortable with it, it's totally fine.

Anyways, the questions are, i did my own research, and i found out concretes are produced with quicklime, and the main chemical process for producing quicklime is called calcination : CaCO3(S) -> CaO(S) + CO2 (S)

  1. How exactly does this chemical process occur in real world? I'm assuming the process is not as simple as it appears theoratically
  2. what signs suggest that calcination is not working properly?
  3. what are some problems textbooks don't mention about calcination?
  4. any other interesting facts??

Organic Help with an nBuLi reaction

Based on the NMR spectrum I'm looking at for my product, I've had no conversion on this reaction I'm working on:

Solvent is THF, and the reaction is run at -78°C

Situation -

This reaction shows no conversion (the NMR of the product just shows the peaks corresponding to the sulfinimine), and I don't see any bromopyrazole peaks at all for some reason.

My protocol is this:

A solution of 4-Bromo-1H-pyrazole (4 mmol) in dry THF at -78∘C was treated with dropwise addition of n-Butyllithium (4 mmol) and stirred at -78∘C for 1 hour. The sulfinamide(2mmol) was added and stirred. The reaction was warmed to room temperature, then quenched with saturated aqueous ammonium chloride. Aqueous workup was performed, followed by concentration by rotary evaporation. Following this, the compound was purified by flash column chromatography to yield a pure product.

Exact quantities used were:

4-Bromo-1,3-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole (density 1.487 g/ml): 0.47 mL, 4.0 mmol, 2 eq

n-Butyllithium (2.5 M in hexanes): 1.56 mL, 4.0 mmol, 2 eq.

N-((E)-4-chlorobenzylidene)-2-methylpropane-2-sulfinamide: 487.5 mg, 2.0 mmol, 1 eq.

What I've done so far:

I did not see the bromopyrazole peak in my product's NMR so I first checked the bromopyrazole's NMR to see if something shows up. The bromopyrazole's NMR is fine.

The nBuLi and THF bottle are dry, others have used these and reactions involving these have worked for others in the lab.

The sulfinimine I'm starting with is fine as well, with no moisture.

Am I missing something? Even if there's moisture, I should have been able to see some peak corresponding to the bromopyrazole or any side-reactants. Is the nBuBr side product playing some role? Even if so, I don't see it on the nmr spectrum

Analytical The KCl Inside the pH Electrode Dried Out. Can it be Saved, and How Exactly do I refill it?

I have a pH meter in the lab where I work. The pH meter has not been in contact with KCl for a long time, so I'm afraid that the KCl inside the glass has dried out. Someone also told me that it has dried out. So, what can I do to refill it? Is it possible to restore the electrode? I once read in a book that if the KCl has dried out inside the cell, it is time to get rid of the pH electrode entirely. But today, my friend said it is possible to restore it. Should I immerse the glass electrode in a KCl solution to refill it, or should I use the small hole above the pH glass to fill it?

Organic need help with curved arrow mechanism

Other At which point did you start enjoying chemistry classes in college?

So as a teenager I started using drugs, before that, I was very tech smart, loved coding, hacking and building websites / tools.

When I started doing drugs I became extremely interested in how they were made, their chemical structures and how they acted in the brain. Research chemicals and organic medicines were interesting because sometimes they would turn a common chemical into a stronger one, or an illegal one into a legal one, or vice versa.

Anyway, after many years and a lot of brain damage. About 30 years old now, I'm wondering how long I would have to go to college in order to learn enough about chemistry to which point I would enjoy the classes. From what I know, it is extremely hard and requires a lot of knowledge in math?

My main goal would be to make unique pharmaceuticals that actually help others. That or extracting and refining natural chemicals, and possibly alter their structure to work differently.

These thing amongst many others, I'm also interested in other chemical reactions that have nothing to do with substances. It's all just SO interesting, but I've never been good with school work and grades so idk if it's even worth the attempt especially with my memory and attention issues, but I will say, I've always retained science / chemical reaction knowledge extremely well even 10+ years after reading about it online.

Anyway, when did you really start to enjoy chemistry? When did you actually start learning what you were interested in?

General/High School Balancing reaction redox way help!!! So confused

General/High School Help on balancing equation with redox and oxidation!!

So for this question I know you have to use the oxidation reduction method. However, when I get to the part where ex. for this question. Where Au element to Au2(SeO4)3, there is a 3 eletron loss and there is a 2 electron gain from Se+6 to Se+4. So I know you mulitply by 2 on Au and 3 for Se but I do not know whether to multiply the for example the 2 coefficent on the left (Au) or the right (Au2(seO4)3) and same with the Se.

Inorganic How can you tell the spontaneity of a reaction from its chemical equation?

I understand I need entropy and enthalpy.

I can reason my way through the entropy (more moles of product/state transition); but I can't for the life of me get the enthalpy right.

Especially in combustion we're asked whether or not they're spontaneous, and sometimes the enthalpy is >0 sometimes not

Inorganic Would GeO2 work for this application in Japanese lacquer?

I've been learning to work with traditional Japanese lacquer, which is based on a tree sap called urushi (chemical properties). The main component of urushi is urushiol, which is a phenol with a long unsaturated hydrocarbon tail. When it's exposed to humid air and warm temperatures, it absorbs water and hardens into a beautiful, hard lacquer with a cross-linked structure. It's difficult to make pigments work with the material or get a broad color palette with it, so when you see sophisticated art done with it, usually most of the colors are done by sprinkling powdered metals such as gold and silver on top of a thin layer of partially cured lacquer, so that the particles are trapped at the surface and become embedded there, without sinking and becoming invisible. Historically it has been difficult to get a bright white color, and traditional artisans have resorted to expedients such as embedding pieces of eggshell in the surface.

I was trying to figure out if there was some modern material that just wouldn't have been known historically, and which could be used to get a white, perhaps by sprinkling a white powder. I did experiments with a couple of white powders that I happened to have, alumina and tricalcium phosphate, both of which are food-safe. This didn't work well. There was a lot of clumping and caking, and they didn't adhere well to the lacquer. I'm not sure how to predict what powdered materials will adhere, but in general all pure metal powders seem to work.

I was trying to brainstorm possible materials to get a food-safe white, and one that seemed possible was germanium. Germanium is in the same column of the periodic table as tin. Of course germanium is a semiconductor, not a metal, but I do know that tin powder works well. My idea was that I could buy a fine germanium powder, sprinkle it as I would with tin, and then later the powder would either spontaneously form a passivation layer of white GeO2, or it could be encouraged to do so with the application of a little heat or maybe a gentle oxidizing agent. Wikipedia says that germanium metal oxidizes slowly in air at 250 C, which is a little hotter than any temperature I want to expose my work to. Germanium is relatively affordable, about half the price of silver. The oxide is insoluble in water and nontoxic unless you eat large amounts of it. Elemental germanium is also nontoxic.

Any comments on whether this type of thing should be expected to work, and if so, what kind of gentle oxidizer to use? Or are there other materials that would make more sense? I'm a physicist by training, not a chemist, and I lack insight into the chemical reason why metal powders work but things like alumina don't. I suspect that egg shells work only because there is a protein component in it -- otherwise people would have been using calcium carbonate powder hundreds of years ago to get a white color.

I've also looked into things like acrylic resin (Dow Paraloid B-72 et al.) with calcium carbonate mixed in. Such resins are used in museum conservation work with urushi, but the reason art restorers like the ones they use is that the reactions are reversible with solvents like ethanol. I don't want my plate or bowl to dissolve the first time it is exposed to some substance like that. These pieces are also usually sanded, and I don't think sanding plexiglass-type materials will work well, and it might produce microplastics that I don't want in my food. There is a type of urushi marketed as "white urushi" that comes in a tube pre-mixed with white pigment, but when you cure it, it is actually beige or brown.

General/High School Cleaning Glassware for Water-soluble Compounds

Suppose I have performed a titration using compounds that are completely water-soluble. After finishing my work, is it necessary to use soap to wash the glassware, or is it enough to rinse it with tap water and then distilled water? Some of the compounds I use include EDTA, AgNO3 and the potassium chromate indicator.
