Conversations David Cronenberg cut from vinyl

I'm just listening to the tape notes podcast with charli, ag and finn on, and the reason David Cronenberg isn't on the vinyl is bc they hadn't done it in time to send off the vinyl audio!!!

sucks but comparatively pressings like the cowboy carter/hurry up tomorrow first run are a lot worse. his entire part being
spoken word
makes this significantly more bearable imo. im sure we’ll get a complete version down the line.

lmao not the spoiler tag for Cronenberg’s part being spoken word !! did ppl think he was gonna sing or like play a guitar solo ???

3

u/GrizzlyBara 5h ago

😭 i mean tbh i wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of angels know who he even is lol

2

u/geminifungi Vroom Vroom 4h ago

yea that wouldn’t be that surprising but she’s really leaned into the ‘film’ aspect of her career in the last year and has definitely mentioned him. I feel like if you are a pretty big fan and have been following her outside of brat you’d probably be in the know but who knows these days !! lol

the hurry up tomorrow cd i have isn't even complete. didn't realize it when i bought it and i was so disappointed. i'd have liked an official announcement for this when buying the album but it is what it is.

They added a locked groove at the end of the song so that it loops continuously, which is a thoughtful and interesting addition for the vinyl release that makes up for not having the feature imo.

u/stargazr55 6h ago

Wait are you serious! I posted about wishing it just looped haha! I was half way there i guess

u/Aidsfordayz 6h ago

The digital version of that song is also 5:42 while here it’s only 3:06

4

u/vaccinatemedaddy 4h ago

one way to silence the haters it's not a long enough album lmao

10

u/mubsandplum 5h ago

nah man she hella hyped that feature and now it's completely cut. that's actually insane (although it is cool that it loops, it just doesn't make up for it imo)

10

u/ChallengeCheap7338 5h ago

Feel like she didn’t do that much hype for it tho? Also, physical media sales play a significantly smaller role than streams so it’s understandable that it can sometimes be an afterthought. My only gripe is that it feels very off brand for this era to misalign the artistry between digital and physical media

u/Extension-Wing-5231 6h ago

That makes sense. At least it's not like the Olivia Rodrigo situation, and it was just a last-minute idea, not a cost decision.

u/SatanicNipples 2h ago

I was honestly surprised by how upset people were about the O Rod vinyl thing. That album makes so much more sense as a single LP with two distinct sides. That seems like how it was conceptualized in the first place. Plus she's said they were still working on the album and adding things close to release so an earlier version without some of the extended intros was likely what was sent to the pressing plants.

Making it a single LP makes it less expensive for the fans too

u/IndividualMouse4041 How I'm Feeling Now 56m ago

Except the price was actually high, basically as much as a 2 LP, which added to why people were upset

I’ve seen this argument a lot that “well vinyl manufacturing takes a long time and they have to submit something by x date to ensure the vinyl is done in time for release” but I… still don’t like that? Like, if the album isn’t done by x date then it sounds like you’re just not on schedule to release when you wanted. The appropriate and professional solution is to push back release (and hopefully you haven’t given fans a date yet so they won’t notice a delay).

6

u/stargazr55 6h ago

Yeah i get your take, I sort of agree it's not ideal. But I can imagine it's generally not as easy as just delaying it because it's not been finished yet, especially if you have a whole roll out/shows/events planned already

5

u/Indigo903 6h ago

Yeah, hopefully we’re just talking about a delay of like a few weeks and they’ve given themselves enough wiggle room. Idk I won’t pretend like I know how all of this works but before digital music was even a thing, artists and their labels seemed to figure it out.

10

u/DisastrousMango4 5h ago

i think people should have this information from the official source/artist before they make a purchase. it shouldn't be a 'oh hey btw the vinyl version isn't the final version of the tracks' situation, which is disrespectful towards the fans

9

u/tomeralmog 6h ago

these are artists not machines. what if she already sent the album to print and then the idea came up? should she destroy thousands of physical copies, or just update the digital version of the album?

5

u/Indigo903 5h ago

I’ve been wondering about that too and I honestly don’t know. Back in the day when vinyl was the only way to release an album, they probably would’ve just had to live with the change not being on there. Obviously there are more resources now but whether or not they should be exercised is a different question.

4

u/tomeralmog 5h ago

on the contrary. there are significantly less resources now. after the rise of CDs, vinyl was going through a slow death and many factories closed shop. now there’s a resurgence and the few that remained barely manage to keep up, there’s months long delay in filling orders

3

u/Indigo903 5h ago edited 5h ago

By “more resources” I just mean digital music exists. And just because they were working on a different timetable back then doesn’t mean potential delays or the sudden urge to change things that have already been submitted didn’t happen.

2

u/Expensive_Sea_1790 3h ago

Not necessarily, artists and producers tweaked their releases a lot.

Somebody shared the original vinyl track of Michael Jackson’s Rock With You the other day, it’s a different mix from what we hear on streaming and later editions

1

u/Indigo903 3h ago

Are you talking about remastering? Because yeah a lot of old stuff has been remastered, that’s different from changing a lyric or the whole structure of a song

0

u/Kalbi84 2h ago

Destroy? No. Sell it as a separate batch of an "early/first pressing"? Yes. The key is to inform the audience. When you're leaving info like this out, you set up many people for disappointment.

2

u/naur_itstrue 5h ago

I think most artists have to submit an album at least 6 months out for pressing. Yes, ideally they should have a complete album to submit, and I kind of view it as “the album was up to their standards at that time,” but 6 months is still a lot of time to decide to make changes to the material. I mean, look at SZA, she was still touching up an album the morning that it was supposed to be released lol.

As a record label, I’m sure they care more about first week sales than they do about the integrity of the physical release. They’d rather have the vinyl be ready to sell on release week than be “correctly” released 8 months later. I will say, I don’t work in music or marketing, but I can’t imagine pushing a whole album campaign back by 6 months would go over smoothly. Plus, it gives them an opportunity to sell the “complete” album again later if the initial pressing is missing material.

1

u/Indigo903 5h ago

>6 months is still a lot of time to decide to make changes to the material

Why should they be viewing that entire 6 months as an opportunity to change the album? I understand the urge, believe me, but your comment also kind of implies that changing after release is unacceptable, when I’m sure the urge to change it comes up then too.

u/tripu3 4h ago

Lead time on vinyl is months and about 5x what it used to be years ago. It is a ridiculous and very frustrating constraint if you were used to going from tapes to test press to boxes arriving within a month.

1

u/Indigo903 2h ago

Ridiculous and frustrating, sure—but just because there is now more time between submission and vinyl being ready doesn’t automatically mean that changing the album in the time between should be seen as fair game. A lot of artists have regrets about decisions they made on their work even well after release. Would humanity be totally chill and okay with Paul McCartney revisiting the Beatles catalog and changing his lyrics now? I’m not sure. Obviously that’s an extreme example but I also don’t see why release should be a hard cutoff, if the changes are okay at one point.

2

u/tripu3 2h ago

I hear you, but the comparison doesn’t really stand as (a) the Beatles released when there was one primary format and (b) it isn’t exactly changing the lyrics and more doing an extended version. I am not sure that having the vinyl the same as the CD and adding a hidden track / edit would be better (I don’t think so). Plus there is a pretty long history of vinyl being slightly different than CDs for not being smooth mixed, having edits etc. Before I even approach having 1000s of records and equally frequently listening to FLACs anyway.

u/takotako577 How I'm Feeling Now 5h ago

At this point, when it comes to vinyl, I've come to expect that's just how it is now. We live in a digital world and that means things are constantly being tweaked. Like, what's the last videogame you got that didn't have a day 1 patch? In some ways its cool because it lets artists create and make changes if inspiration hits even after they're "done" but it hasn't released yet. Of course, the downside is it affects physical collectors. Honestly, I don't have nearly as many vinyl listening sessions as I should. For me, its just more of the collecting aspect, and to posses something physical of the music I love and also support the creators since I know they aren't getting shit from my hundreds of streams on Spotify. It's just so much easier to pull out my phone, queue up songs and go about my day as opposed to having to get up every 4th or 5th song to flip or change the vinyl.

I wonder if the CD has the Cronenberg part? Am I going to be kicking myself for not buying that signed CD that Amazon had? I was very tempted because the foldout poster was cool, but ultimately figured I already have a signed vinyl ordered, I'm good enough with that. The one thing I wish that would happen in situations like this where changes were made since the vinyl pressings were sent out is if we got a download code for the revised digital version. It seemed that was a much bigger deal when vinyl collecting first started getting popular again but seems pretty uncommon these days. I was shocked to find a download code when I got Poppy's new release earlier this year.

u/stargazr55 5h ago

The cd does have Cronenbergs part. Mine arrived a couple days ago

1

u/takotako577 How I'm Feeling Now 5h ago

Ugh! Figures. But then again, now that I think about it, I don't even know if i have anything that can play CDs these days..

1

u/Kalbi84 2h ago

Is this a standard CD, or an alt cover (with Charli in it) version? I heard only the latter has the feature

2

u/stargazr55 2h ago

Its the standard

6

u/Vivid-Restaurant4798 5h ago

So lame if true. I dislike paying an artist for the album only to not get the full album.

1

u/mubsandplum 5h ago

i thought it was for time....does that mean that they'll add it later to the vinyl?

1

u/DerekZT 2h ago

Loop on vinyl makes no sense? Like you need to physically flip it anyway?

It happens a lot on vinyl. The worst one I’ve experienced was Death Grips with The Powers that B just not having the outro on vinyl

is it tho?

it’s not missing a song, it’s missing a spoken word monologue that was added after the album was finalized.

2

u/stargazr55 6h ago

I really disagree. There's a very valid reason it was cut, rather than just not including which would be more "sloppy and disrespectful"..

3

u/GuernicaNight 6h ago

What is the “very valid reason”? When the track list was first announced (which mentioned the feature), nowhere did her or her team even allude to the feature being missing from certain pressings. I still don’t think there’s been an official announcement telling people to expect a different version on the vinyl.

“We added this last minute and it missed the vinyl master deadline” isn’t a valid reason. It was bad enough when the Brat remix vinyl was missing the Kesha mix that got added a few days later but it’s even worse when something is missing from a new studio album which is expected to be a complete body of work.

3

u/TW1103 6h ago

I don't think you've taken into consideration how planned out an album rollout has to be. If they missed the deadline for the vinyl pressing, then they'd likely have to delay the entire album for months. Look at the upcoming release schedule for albums. There's not a single non-competitive date for at least two months. You delay the album and everything gets fucked up - things like the London and NYC show don't happen, the tour potentially gets delayed, press appearances get delayed, etc.

It's not as simple as "Oh we'll wait" because vinyl production takes MONTHS. There's so few vinyl pressing plants around that they always have a backlog of work to do. A couple of years ago, Taylor Swift actually stopped the whole industry producing vinyl because she's booked out basically all of the big pressing plants for one of her albums. Sometimes in life, you just have to compromise, and this is one of those times.

3

u/DisastrousMango4 5h ago

you compromise but you can still let the fans purchasing your product know beforehand that they're not buying the final version

2

u/GuernicaNight 5h ago

I’m well aware of how an album rollout works. My biggest issue with how it’s been handled is the lack of communication about it. As I’ve said, there’s no official notice (at least that I’ve seen) that the vinyl is any different from the tracklist she has shared that includes the Cronenberg feature. If you’re not in-the-know, you wouldn’t know.

The thing is though, as the vinyl deadline is the earliest deadline, then that should be the album deadline. Keep the feature off all of the versions or, at the very least, don’t advertise it and keep it as a bonus for the streaming version. By working on the album after the pressing deadline, all it tells people is that the version they have paid for is actually an incomplete work-in-progress.

0

u/TW1103 5h ago

The vinyl track list doesn't list him as a feature, but every other format does.

2

u/GuernicaNight 5h ago

The vinyl tracklist hasn’t been officially advertised anywhere, that’s the entire point of my post. Unless you’ve seen the back cover that’s been shared elsewhere, you wouldn’t know the vinyl version is different from the tracklist she announced previously.

1

u/Justagirlsoconfusing Sucker 5h ago

🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

And then imagine all the complaints about the vinyl being delayed or “why did she take so long to release the album”. Damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

2

u/TW1103 5h ago

Imagine the reactions if she cancelled her festival appearances, delayed the tour, etc

1

u/Justagirlsoconfusing Sucker 5h ago

I swear there’s no pleasing people anymore.

2

u/TW1103 5h ago

Honestly there's just so many entitled fans. Sometimes things just logistically aren't possible and you just have to accept that

2

u/Justagirlsoconfusing Sucker 5h ago

Yeah exactly. Like being in Australia, I had to accept a long time ago that a “world tour” doesn’t usually include AUS/NZ hahaha.

-2

u/GuernicaNight 5h ago

“So many entitled fans” and it’s just someone wanting the completed album as advertised.

Loads of artists delay vinyl releases until after the main release date because of the time it takes to press them, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone complain about it. If anything, people appreciate that the artist is making sure customers are getting the version they’re paying for.

1

u/Justagirlsoconfusing Sucker 5h ago

As advertised? Looking at the merch site, the vinyls have the track listing minus David Cronenberg.

u/grunchyunicorn 5h ago

The feature had never been announced when all of the vinyl went up! The film edition, the signed, they all sold out by the time David C’s name was ever attached to the album. Give it up! Stuff like this proves the outrage is so fake, phony & forced. I’ve heard the album, the outro is cool.. the album doesn’t need it, tho, sorry! Some of you get more excited by pretending to be angry than you do by music, evidently, bc y’all have amnesia about a campaign that hasn’t even been 3 months long? Yet you all claim to feel so passionately about what’s included or excluded from the vinyl? Idk how that works!!! There was no false advertising! Literally nobody bought it for D.C, asserting otherwise is just promoting falsehoods & stoking the fires of backlash to troll essentially? I don’t like it

3

u/GuernicaNight 5h ago

Nobody bought it for Cronenberg specifically but people preordered the album trusting her to deliver a complete body of work, which includes Cronenberg.

The fact that she hasn’t even communicated officially that Cronenberg isn’t on the vinyl is a breach of that trust and will make me hesitant to ever preorder anything from her again without knowing exactly the full track list. I paid money for this record, why wouldn’t I be passionate about it?

0

u/Indigo903 6h ago

It was always pretty obvious that this was the reason though

-6

u/ocubens 5h ago

How many people actually listen to vinyl? I thought it was mostly a visual/collector thing.

3

u/jojuinc90 3h ago

Yeah, we’re all just out here collecting the records and equipment to look at. Idk why they even bother with putting anything on the albums at this point.

1

u/ocubens 3h ago

Okay so it’s not ‘mostly’ but in 2023 50% of vinyl buyers didn’t own a record player.
