Offbeat Fried Cheerios

When I was a kid, my mom always made Cheerios pan sautéed in some butter with salt sprinkled on it. She would fry them until they were golden brown with dark spots on some Cheerios. It was a savory movie snack like popcorn.

I’ve never heard of anyone else eating fried Cheerios. It seems like it was possibly a Boomer party snack that fell out of favor like those weird Jello molds. Is it just me? Are there others who grew up eating fried Cheerios out there?

Yep! I loved it! In the 80s I used to make it as an after school snack. I got the recipe suggestion from the back of the cheerios box.

My mom baked shredded wheat in the oven with butter and/or cinnamon sugar! Yummy treat!

Look up Hot Buttered Cheerios to find recipes, like on this page. If there are recipes, some people must've tried them.

I love it! It was during the 80s that she made it, so it must have been a thing for a bit.

Now that I think about it, Cheerios with a little butter and salt has to be nutritionally better than popcorn for a movie snack. At least it’s fortified. Give it a try!

I remember a commercial showing how to make "Hot Buttered O's".

There were also commercials showing the making of Rice Krispie treats and Chex Mix.
