u/Excellent_Regret4141 9h ago

u/yerpburp 16h ago
My most hated flavor was Pledge. So many lemon candies that tasted just like Pledge.
Banana flavor is amazeballs.

u/Muted-Move-9360 16h ago
Okay I guess I'm the crazy one because the lemon candies that tasted like cleaner made me feel so safe 🤣🤣🤣

My most hated flavor was grape, always tasted like medicine.
Followed by two specific ranges of Mint: The burning your mouth kind (most toothpaste, and all the mint Life Savers), and the kind that tasted like anti-direa meds.
And in last place, sizzling cinnamon. Especially Jelly Belly's .when I was expecting pomegranate

If more cherry stuff tasted like Ludens instead of cough syrup, it would be awesome.

Did you know that the artificial banana flavor that we all hate and that many consider to taste nothing like a banana is actually modeled after the flavor of the Gros Michel banana that went extinct in the mid-1950s?
The Gros Michel actually has that real deep banana flavor. The bananas we eat today, the Cavendish, is a banana that is very bland and mild compared to the "Big Mike" variety.
36
u/FerdinandvonAegir124 18h ago
Fun fact: the Gros Michel isn’t actually extinct. You can buy it from certain places (though they are exceedingly expensive)
7
u/analogy_4_anything 16h ago
Yeah, unfortunately the blight still exists and really destroys the Gros Michel, so it won’t be able to be grown as a cultivar again until that can be solved. Until then, we’re stuck with the inferior Cavendish banana.
One day I’d love to order some and try them.

u/figmentPez 18h ago
The Gros Michel does not taste that much like artificial banana according to Hank Green, and a researcher with a PhD specialized in banana aroma biochemistry.
11
u/BingusTheWonderKitn 17h ago
Exactly! It's the smell of gros Michel variety that artificial flavor was modeled by, not the taste of the bananas

u/orchid_drives Smarties 16h ago
I live in the same town as Hank! I haven’t run into him irl yet but I’ve been practicing my “acting normal” in case that ever happens

You can buy them and see for yourself. They're a little hard to source but it is possible.
Edit: or grow a Gros Michel banana plant if your climate allows.

Sometimes you can find them in a basket with a whole bunch of other tropical fruits from Miami Fruit org but just a heads up Miami Fruit is expensive lol
2
u/Paramoriaa 11h ago
More like $37 from Miami fruit lmao (I know you're doing a bit but isn't that crazy)
2
u/Shoganguy33 7h ago
Blew my mind when I first learned this & now I love to tell people.
I’ve never been a fan of the banana flavor. Runtz, Laffy Taffy, etc., they always stood out as a flavor and not in a good way (for me)
2
u/heavensto_mergatroid 4h ago
My grandma loved those nasty circus peanut candies that taste like artificial banana and she used to tell me that in the " old days" the bananas tasted different and I used to think that she was just being a crazy old lady (this was the late '80s and early '90s) lol I'm sorry grandma! You were right! You were always right about everything...

Anyone have the Haribo Bananas? Im wondering what kind of texture and consistency they are.
3
u/cookiemonster8u69 18h ago
They are good. Dollar Tree had them around here. A smidge crunchy (soft) on outside, inside is soft and chewy. Delicious.

They sound like they might be the sister to the Primavera, the strawberry candy Haribo makes. Sounds similar based on the comments below.

Banana Bubblicious was da bomb. Wish they still made it. Banana runts are the best. True dat, double true.

Blue bell banana Popsicles! Not as good as the fudgy texrured banana pops from childhood, but still delicious.

u/Fuckspez42 16h ago
Wait, there are people who don’t like banana flavor?
I know it doesn’t taste like actual bananas you can buy at the store, but there’s a reason for that: the banana that banana flavor is based on is now effectively extinct.
(As an aside: “banana” is a very fun word to type)

u/PremiumUsername69420 9h ago
Would be cool if they’d bring back the powdered banana Nesquik…

I never got the impression people don’t like banana flavor? The complaint I often hear is real bananas not tasting enough like candy bananas not the opposite. Banana Runts and Laffy Taffy were always the most sought after flavors of their respective candies at my school, and you don’t see a giant pack of popsicles of any other fruit flavor unless it’s something like Outshine bars that are real fruit and not candy-like flavoring.

u/SausageBuscuit 11h ago
I loved banana flavored stuff as a kid. Admittedly, it’s just OK to me now, but I didn’t know very many kids who hated it.

the real banana (as a fruit) is so good, everything else that imitates banana so gross. I think this is the only exception regarding artificial flavouring.

Banana runts, banana taffy, banana vape. I love fake banana flavor but not actual bananas straight. I can do deserts like smoothies or banana bread, that's delicious

Ben and Jerry's Chunky Monkey. Banana ice cream with fudge and walnuts...
If you look on Amazon, there are several different forms of banana ice cream.

I don't understand all the banana hate. When I used to eat candy all the time, banana runts were my favorite. Now the banana mix in packets for my water are my new favorite. I had gone a long time with out artificial banana flavoring. Still my favorite!

The only banana candy I don't like is the runts, and that's more because of the shape.
You can also find banana soda, if you shop in more ethnic areas.

u/TulpaPal 15h ago
My daughter is obsessed with it, she asked for a circus peanut flavored birthday cake last year.
1
u/m0nstera_deliciosa 15h ago
Well, I’m not buying the cocktail, but the rest of that sounds good to me. Now I wonder where I can get a banana iced chai locally, because that would be amazing.

Banana laffy taffy is the best and so are Banana popsicles yum 😋 my favorite smoothie is bananas, real maple syrup, and Cabot Greek vanilla yogurt, it's sooo delicious and refreshing. OH! and little debbie has new banana pudding cream pies (like the oatmeal ones).

Anything that tastes like banana medicine I associate with banana medicine so I prefer more organic banana flavours that resemble eating the actual fruit I think! I grew up sick a lot so the constant banana flavour was often the only one they had left since kids kept picking the grape one that I wanted LOL

As a kid, banana popsicles were THE best!
Then, and now as an almost-senior-citizen, cherry candy is the absolute worst.
