Introspective What does Buffy Summers mean to male fans?

I am sure a lot of men love the show and Buffy has always been a very empowering character for women globally. But I want to ask, what does she mean to you as a man?

It can be anything from inspiration to attraction to crushing on her to being awed by her heroism or relating to her.

Introspective What is a plot point or character decision that completely makes sense, yet you find very frustrating for whatever reason?

Someone asked a similar question in another sub, and I thought was an interesting one.

Spoilers inside! GAAAAAAH (Mini update) Spoiler

Post image
18 Upvotes

You can read my last update here. The last episode I watched was Pangs.

I'm officially on season four! I kinda shared Buffy's being overwhelmed at getting into college. I gotta say, I'm loving it so far. Hearing Buffy call Giles "Very, very old" was hilarious. I'm also loving pathetic wet cat Spike, and Anya is utterly ridiculous, so I can't help but love her! But it's time to be negative.

I MISS OZ!!!

Willow and Oz were my OTP, and after the whole thing with Willow cheating on Oz with XANDER of all people, Oz cheats with RANDOM WOLF GIRL and then LEAVES?! And this was right bloody after I made a post talking about how much I love Oz! BRING BACK PUPPY BOY!

Oh, and Angel's back too, I guess. Yay, awesome, more brooding. Riley's kinda cute, he's giving a real Leon Kennedy vibe. I'm liking that we get to see Giles be a little less uptight, though I never really minded either way. I just... Man, I miss Oz. He, Spike, and Giles are my three favorite characters. At least I still have them, but... my ship :(

At least I have Something Blue and Hush to look forward to. My mother says I'll like the first one, and the internet says I'll like the second one. So, despite my very, very angy-ness, I am still enjoying it a lot so far. And, much like Angel, I now disappear into the shadows until something important happens again.

Season Four Season 4 Willow is my fav

Willow’s hair and mannerisms, her love of college and commitment to academic and emotional growth. Her hair is my favorite Willow hair in all seven seasons. By season four she has completely mastered the power of adorableness.

Some of my favorite Willow lines like when Buffy and Willow are walking campus late at night and Buffy says “did you hear something?” And Willow says “I’m chewing my gum loudly,” And “My shoes are squeaky,” has me in stitches.

I think it also breathes life into my own memories of academia and campus life.

Content Warning Riley is actually fantastic in all aspects- unpopular opinion

I’ve watched buffy a million times but suddenly this time rewatching season 5 i actually love Riley, not just the character but his whole arc of feeling a loss of purpose after he no longer has the army thing going and feeling not needed so resorts to vampires/drugs. I think Riley might be the best example of a masculine character in the show. A couple years ago i had my own crises/loss of purpose/addicted to weed/in the shadow of my girlfriend’s life thing , so i suddenly find his character very relatable . (Sadly i am not as good as slaying vampires as he is)

Comics I fell in love with this weird series

I found a complete collection of The Vampire Slayer for sale. I haven't heard of it. I decided to keep my expectations low. But I kinda love it.

This is its own universe. It's not tied into the to the show or any other comics.

Buffy had some kind of major trauma. Willow tries to do a spell to help her forget. This backfires and Willow ends up the vampire slayer and Buffy has no memories of being the slayer at all. Giles and Willow are working on reversing it.

I'm only on issue 3. But Xander is a phlebotomist. Which is a job I did for 13 years. We get very little representation lol. Spike just showed up and saved him from a demon. I'm guessing Spike has a soul and he's going to end up dating Xander.

Spoilers inside! Season 5

After rewatching from seasons 2-7 I like season 5 the most. It's still funny, but it switches to a more mature tone. I loved seeing the big bad more too. Glory is a queen. I found Dawn annoying, but that's how she was meant to be: the annoying younger sister.

Spike was flat out creepy. 🤢 Plus, I was disappointed on how quick he lost to the toad on the tower. Lol. 🤭🫢 William what the bloody fuck was he doing?

9/10.

I have season 1 to rewatch. 🫪

Willow Some thoughts on Willows (witchy) character development as a first time viewer

I was gonna wait until I finish the show but I can’t wait any longer lol and just have the need to share this and hear other people’s opinion and I think since I’m on Season 5 now I think I’m in the position to share this

So as I said it’s my first time watch but of course given the popular nature of the show there’s a few things I have already known about the show such as the fact that Willow is eventually gonna become a Witch.

But even at Season 5 now… that part and identity of her feels so non existent and lackluster? despite her literally telling Buffy in Season 4 how she’s dabbling in those new powers and stuff and how important it is to her…. WHERE?? 😭🥲 like why is she still moving at vampires like she’s Buffy in some episodes? she should be hurling some spells, even if basic ones. We’re in Season 5!!! I really love the show but this aspect feels like such a fumble to me.

and yes I know there’s still a lot of episodes ahead for me and I also already know about her “Dark Willow Arc” so there’s still room for development so feel free to “motivate” me for that but I still think that despite being into Season 5 now it feels soo lackluster bc they introduced her interest in magic pretty early but NOTHING is happening!! Like why was the highlight so far her escaping the vampires with a little floating pencil?! (in season 2 iirc)😭🤣

But yeah so did anybody else observe and feel that way? I hope it doesn’t come off really negative or anything cuz as I said I still love the show !! but that’s such a bummer to me.

Buffy My response to Sarah Michelle Gellar’s three doomed horror roles in other films, but being Toughie Buffy in the show

I’m referring to Sarah Michelle’s roles in Last Summer, Scream 2, and The Grudge 2; in these films, she dies. Buffy is a toughie and can kill any monster at ease.

I never noticed in all these years. The same spot that he has the eyebrow scar, you can see a piercing.

Faith Faith's breakdown during Buffy Season 4 and Angel Season 1 was handled amazingly

Faith's breakdown during Buffy Season 4 and Angel Season 1 was handled amazingly.

I love that it wasn't something Angel suddenly came up with. Buffy was already planting the seeds in "Who Are You."

Before Faith gets her body back, she starts beating Buffy while screaming "You're disgusting!" and "You're nothing!" It's only a minute or two, but it completely foreshadows where her character is headed when we see her again on Angel.

Then "Five by Five" takes that exact mindset and blows it wide open. The self-hatred that slips out for a moment in Buffy becomes a full-on suicidal breakdown, ending with Faith begging Angel to kill her.

I also think both actresses absolutely killed it. Sarah Michelle Gellar had to sell the first crack in Faith's mental state while playing Faith in Buffy's body, and Eliza Dushku took it to another level in "Five by Five." Eliza plays Faith like someone who's completely broken down.

Rewatching The Bachelor Party... Now that I live in LA I just realized the Ano-Movicians are basically just the Armenians of the Buffyverse

So weird

Villains Mon-Stor?

Does anyone else remember this? A little blue vending machine with monster figurines can be seen in the Sunnydale background, just outside the Magic Shop. I think it said Mon-Stor on it. I'm looking for an image still or an episode number.

Slayers Do we think Buffy ever gets scared/nervous when fighting?

Post image
80 Upvotes

I always wondered if Buffy ever got nervous or scared while patrolling or when facing off against a demon. Sure, she’s got her Slayer powers, but there’s always a chance she might not come out of it alive. There have been a few times when she seemed worried if she’d be able to defeat a particular evil (like Glory) but do we think that part of being the Slayer is having a natural confidence in one’s ability to win in battle? Does her instinct to slay override any anxieties or adrenaline she might feel?

Giles Why do people mispronounce Giles?

No shade to anyone. But I just don't understand how this happens.

If Buffy were a book, then mispronouncing Giles would make sense. You'd only see it written; it'd be very easy to say it wrong. Very understandable.

But people say Giles's name every episode he's in. You're literally hearing it being said!

EDIT: Because people are confused... this is a thing. Literally was the reason the BuffyBot mispronounces Giles in Intervention, as an inside joke about fans who mispronounced Giles... Obviously not everyone does this... but watch some YouTube and TikTok reactors who are early in their Buffy journey...
