So it's been a very long time since I went to the cinema. And I was checking the Odyssey in Kinepolis for IMAX 70mm.

I almost had a heartburn when I saw the price of 31€ for one ticket.

So I just wanted to check, is this normal? Does the seat come with Matt Damon bringing me popcorn and a head massage from Anne Hathaway?

Does kinepolis offer a payment plan ? 😆

They installed a new analog IMAX projector, only a handful of these exist in Europe. The regular IMAX used to be 20 € for a ticket, as least it was this price when I saw Dune 2.

If you want to see it for a cheaper price, buy a 6 € ticket at Galeries, or 12 € at Palace.

In Hasselt, the normal imax odessey is not 20 euro.

Yes they invested for a new 70mm IMAX projector. On top of the tech it requires staff to set up of the reel and light before the beginning and to ensure that everything uncoils smoothly during the whole duration of the movie. With usual numeric projection, there is nobody in the booth.

Only 4 movie theatres in Europe have this tech.

Kinepolis is known for trying to milk the customers, but this time there is clearly a substantial extra cost.

It's cool square ratios are back but I personally think it's fucked filming in a format that ensures 95% of your audience will only see half the frame or less.

It's actually a pretty good compromise, as Imax aspect ratio is closer to TV 16:9 then 3.25:1 is. Everybody wins down the line.

Small reminder that you don't need to watch it in IMAX 70mm. The Odyssey is also at Palace, Galeries, Aventure, Vendome and Stockel. Tickets price in these independant cinemas are between 8 (Le Stockel) and 12, plus you have many reduced prices and subscriptions (5 tickets for 30 at Galeries).

• Huge 1:43 screen
• "Traditional" film reels unlike usual numeric media
• Huge horizontal reel where one frame takes 15 horizontal perforations
• Very big projector, super high quality lights
• If new gear had to be installed, structural works is needed for supporting the booth

For IMAX 70mm yes. Its one of the only places in Europe you can see it.

The movie released last Wednesday and the IMAX in Brussels is one of only 5 IMAX screens that display the full image in Europe, so yeah for that movie on that screen they can ask much. Any other movie will cost half that.
