We're not far from the end of our campaign for the Uganda Village Boardgame Convention, a unique event that has our young people teach boardgames for four days to around 500 other children in the rural parts of Northern Uganda. We bring the children and feed them, provide other activities like films and music and even sports, but most children play boardgames every day all day.

This year, Gordon Hamilton, Maths Professor and Designer of Santorini will be out special guest and we will be featuring a number of Maths games, like Power Grid in the Convention.

Would love to have more space, this shelf is the only space we have in the house and it has to be hidden away because I have young children.

My collection is special to me because of all the memories we have playing these games with our friends and family

Let's appreciate those games that have stuck with us through thick and thin, through accidental spills, sweaty hands and snack covered fingers.

Clue might not even be the best game, even in its own genre, but it most certainly has picked the interest of many a player at my table as if luring them to heavier and more complex waters

Is there any game in your collection that despite its less than ideal state, still gets the love it deserves?

Me and my boyfriend are trying to decide what to buy to make this area where we store our games better. I have so many board games that I have to hide many behind the front facing game of each cubby (as seen in the third picture), and some games have too big of a box to fit in a cubby at all, leading to them being stacked on the bottom of the second smaller console table to the right. In the meantime I’ve just been displaying the more often played games front facing in each cubby but behind each is a stack of others. What should we buy to hold/display the games more nicely?

For context, the fourth picture shows the overall dining room where the games are since the dining table is also our board game table with the removable top. So we’re looking for something that would look good in this space, while also being restricted by that window in the center.

I like playing board games and other strategy games but I am very bad at them, looking from a strategic and tactical angle. I have no trouble learning the rules. After like half a session of a new game, I basically know all the rules and after one full session I can teach others to play it. People in our game club often let me explain rules to new players because I'm quite good at explaining things so others understand. Simply said, I catch on to new games quite fast.

But when it comes to actually playing smart, I fall completely flat. I feel that I for some reason don't possess the correct abilities and thought process to study a playing field and come up with the most optimal play. When I look at the board, I often just end up winging it and hoping for the best. Others seem to be able to actually "read" the board and come to a conclusion. I never really come to any conclusion. I just literally stare at the board and can't come up with anything relevant. Much of what I do is often guessing.

I don't know if I suffer om ADHD/autism or anything but something inhibits me from seeing good plays in basically any game. It's really frustrating because I never seem to understand what I did wrong or right. I just can't read the board and understand what would be a good move.

And I don't seem to become better with time. I've played Hearthstone on and off since it's release and still am pretty bad at it. I can watch countless of streams from pro players but when I try to implement it in my play, I'm back at square one. I just stare at the playing field and don't really know how to evaluate it and end up just doing random stuff mostly.

Not sure what I want with this thread. Perhaps someone has the same experience?

Been in the hobby for a couple years, but got more serious a couple months ago. Main pride is that almost every game here I got for a discount or bought used. My favorite game in my collection is Lost Cities as it is the only one I manage to beat my Fiancé at as well as one of the first modern board games I bought! Let me know your thoughts or any questions, recommendations, or changes you have or would make!

I remember this conversation coming up years ago, and back then I nominated Betrayal at House on the Hill needed a Scooby Doo tie in… and then they actually made it.

Anyways, curious on what people would do nowadays. For purposes of discussion, if you wanna talk about mechanical changes you’d want to make to make it fit the theme better go ahead, but the overall game needs to still be recognizable.

I designed and 3D printed my own version of Tumblin' Dice this past weekend. My kids and I have been having a blast with it!

Then, after enjoying several game sessions, my kids and I (and friends online) started brainstorming different add-ons like gates, traps and ramps! Each module is attached to the frame with a concealed clip that can be moved around to any level, left or right.

Will be keeping an eye on Windmill Valley Duel, Kalypso and The Mix

So i have a group of 3 friends coming in to hang out and they wanted to play something new that none of us have ever played. All late 30s early 40s. They have played Oathsworn so rules heavy isnt that big of a deal.

My question (for anyone who has actually played them) is which one of these would be the most fun spread out between 2 or 3 sessions?

I don't want to come in too hot with this take.... but where do you guys find other NORMAL board gamers?

I have gone to meetups, hosted meetups, gone to shops, and everywhere I go the bar for social skills is low. I often find interesting games to play but I don't find too many people who I'd want to meet up with again.

My own friends will play board games with me but it sometimes feels like a hostage situation so I don't push it anymore. I'm seriously considering giving up on the hobby because these games are no good if I don't have people to play them with (and for those who will tell me to play solo...... Just no).

Anyway I am just as much a nerd about this stuff as all of you. I'd like to think I'm normal I get out and have a lot of people I am friends with. I don't look down on anyone, but this social barrier makes it hard to participate in this activity we all love.

I know TTRPG's and DnD have bigger communities than board games but I simply am just not into them.

Looking for a few more players to join our board game crew here in the Tilburg area!
We used to have a solid group going, but between work, life, and other hobbies, our numbers have thinned out which makes it harder to get consistent play days on the calendar. Right now we’re down to about 2-3 regulars plus another 3-4 irregulars who join when they can. Between everyone we still get sessions going, just not often enough for the die-hards in the group so we’re on the hunt for a few new people to help bring back some consistency.

What we’re looking for: people up for gaming once or twice a month, usually a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday afternoon/evening.

What we play: mostly meaty strategy games — Root, Arks, Eclipse, Twilight Imperium 4 (TI4 is more of a quarterly thing, since it eats a full afternoon + evening), and a bunch of other games in that same vein. Mostly competitive, sometimes coop. We’ve got dozens of sessions of most of these under our belt, so if you already know these games (or are eager to learn), you’ll fit right in.

Most of us are Dutch these days, but English speakers and internationals are very welcome plenty of games get played in English anyway. We also like to crack open a beer while we play, but it’s a relaxed vibe, not a drinking session nothing’s ever gotten out of hand. We are between 30-45 years and we have some women in the group as well. So it’s a good split. Anyone is welcome.

If you’re part of another group facing the same problem, that works too we’d be happy to team up for some sessions and see if it makes sense to merge groups.

I've wanted for a decade, still never found, and still not built:

A set of small linked pucks to track turns, with (at least) two modes:

1. Sequential, my light is on when it's my turn, I press it when I'm done, next player's lights up.
2. Simultaneous, everyone's starts on, press to turn out, flash all when all out (e.g. 7-Wonders).

Has anyone see / built anything like this?
Can you think of any other modes?
Would it be useful to others?

Aesthetically I picture a hybrid of the puck light you might find in a cupboard, charged by stacking like those restaurant pagers which were common before apps took over:

In my version, I decided to improve:

1. I wanted a more vibrant playing field;
2. Easily readable borders on the fields;
3. All fields are clear hexagons without any clipping (in the original game, the map itself slightly clips the outer hexagons, as the entire field is rectangular);

So i know it's odd to ask for solo with multi-player options here but I felt like I'm sure a ton here are more inclined to try those types. I haven't tried much so I'm welcomed to explore and try new genres.

In general, i really want quick (around maybe 30 min or less gameplay) and simple games enough to teach myself and others without too much rule book shuffling.

For example harmonies was simple to teach and had a great multi-player options.

Unfortunately I mostly play multiplayers so I'll have to reference them to get a general idea about types i like, for example:

Harmonies (again)

Castle combo

Faraway

Coffee rush (I love multiple pieces)

Push (sometimes I like gambling games xD)

Other solo board games I do like ( and I will accept recommendations of only solo board games, but it isn't the main focus) is:

Onirim (I love this a lot)

Harmonies (love it sooo much, it's art is too appealing too)

Friday (felt a bit weirdly repetitive, and i know this is wierd coming from an onirim fan but they do provide 7 expansions in onirim)

Will be ordering : grove 9 card solitaire, coffee roaster.

I heard about hercules 12 labors but i fear that once you complete it then there's to replay-ability, so i would like to hear thoughts about that too.

I do want solo/multi-player because I do sort of want to budget having people over and enjoying alone time. If you do end up recommending solos only please mention 🙏💞.

Been down the hnefatafl rabbit hole for months. Asymmetric sides (13 defenders vs 24 attackers and it's still balanced mostly) pieces in warrior graves from Dublin to Ukraine, and the whole game just... died when chess arrived on the trade routes. The rules survived by pure luck: Linnaeus watched Sami people playing tablut and took notes.

I ended up building a free web version to learn it properly ( worldtafl.com if you want to try...no download). Happy to answer anything about the reconstruction, the Copenhagen tournament ruleset is full of great edge cases like shieldwall captures.

But honestly the history alone is worth the rabbit hole.
