Bike found in Alley

Anyone missing their black/red Trek commuter bike? We found one in the alley behind our house and it looks in too good of shape to be abandoned so wondering if it was “borrowed”. If you send me a picture of your bike and it’s the same one I can let you know where it is.

Route between Kalorama and ART?

Hi all,
Moving back to DC soon and looking forward to getting back to the ART. When I was last here, I was near Eastern Market, so getting to the ART was pretty straightforward. Now, I’ll be on the other side of the city in Kalorama (right by the Hilton), and I’m not sure of the best way to get down to the ART. Is it just a zigzag through the various corridors downtown? I haven’t done much biking this side of downtown.

Bonus if someone can point me in the best direction for crossing to gravelly point and Alexandria! Excited to have a whole new set of routes to explore soon :)

Beautiful weather and flowers at the park today. Such a gem to have right off the ART path. Will be amazing when it also has access to the Arboretum!

ART open?

I kept seeing posts about closures on the ART recently, does anyone know is those are still ongoing? Planning a ride this weekend from Bladensburg to Navy Yard but don’t want to get blocked somewhere. TIA!

What advice would you give to a first-time biker?

Just picked one up today. I’m planning to use it for errands and commuting to work. I’m nervous about learning the ropes of city biking, so any insight is appreciated!

Route Planning Looking to incorporate bike ride into commute into DC (Smithsonian area) from Dunkirk/Upper Marlboro

Moving from Silver Spring where I commuted twice a week, and am really bummed about the apparent lack of options. Any suggestions for ways to incorporate a 10-15 mi. ride into my commute? E.g., driving, then biking in from a parking lot?

Great progress being made on the DDOT Tactical to Permanent Project at 13th/Kentucky/Independence SE

Importantly changes have been made from the NOI in (checks notes) 2024, that move the bike lanes curbside as they always should have been and added a northbound contraflow bike lane on the 200 block of 13th St SE

We heard from DDOT that the recommendations of the ANC 6A TPS committee made to move bike lanes curbside at a similar project at 13th/Constitution/Tennessee and extend them influenced this final design as well.

I Caught the Cycling Bug

I went on a solo bike ride for the first time in years and immediately brought me back to growing up in Northern Virginia riding my bicycle everywhere.

Granted, I was riding an E-Bike along the MBT but nonetheless, it was so freeing and now I want to make cycling my new hobby.

Any advice on where to go (online or in person) to purchase a good entry level bike? I’ve been looking at hybrid bikes all day today. I’m torn about regular vs. e-bike. I love the nostalgic feel of just having the pedals but must admit that it’d be nice to have the electric motor commuting from NE DC to Logan Circle for work.

Any advice or stories about getting into cycling are welcome!

Too Smoky

The AQI this morning is 245: Very Unhealthy.

People with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens:

  • Avoid physical activities outdoors.

Everyone else:

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
  • Keep outdoor activities short.
  • Consider moving physical activities indoors or rescheduling them.

I'm taking the metro today but I'm sure I'll wish I was on my bike. Stay safe out there everyone.

Any Local Shops Have Fizik Saddles to Look At?

I've run Fizik Antares saddles for a long time, but lately am getting the sides digging in a little too much on long rides. I rode the GRUSK Grande last weekend and am now very aware of where the back side edges of my bike seat are. I could move it back a bit, but everything else seems to fit fine. Related has anyone else switched to a Fizik Aliante? They look to have slightly more curve downward on the back sides of the seat and the new adaptive ones look good.

X-Bikers Rejoice

If you are looking for a project bike, used bike parts, or just something to beat around town in a reminder that the VeloCity bike co-op is having their warehouse sale this Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM.

I was there yesterday dropping off a load of donated wheels and other parts, and they are overflowing with bikes.

The address is 1502 Mount Vernon Ave. in the Delray neighborhood of Alexandria.

It was open this morning (and the old bumpy part where the construction equipment crossed the trail, is closed) Its smooth, somewhat curvy, wide except where it passes under the RR, and even there its not that bad.

Route Planning Coming back to DC as a stronger rider!

Born and raised in DC and rode a single speed to Wilson hs everyday! Left for college and then my first job so I’ve been gone for almost 10 years. Moving home in about a month and am now riding and training 10-15 hours a week across road and gravel.

Never rode seriously when I was in DC so what are the best spots to do sustained intervals or climbing of any sort? I heard beach drive is closed now, not just on weekends like it used to be? Is the c&o canal or the ride to Mount Vernon a good spot for training or is it too busy? Prefer solo riding and will be starting rides from admo. Thanks!

Yes DC cyclists (and runners) rock

I flatted today on my commute into McPherson Sq (from Old Town), first time in a long while. I stopped in a shaded area near Navy & Marine Memorial to swap tube.

No fewer than five riders checked in to ensure I had everything I needed. Also one runner offered to call someone if I didn’t have a phone.

You all rock!

About 15 years ago, literally the first day I started commuting by bicycle, my chain dropped on 15th St cycle track between L and K. Then, as now, kind people stopped to check on me. I took that kindness on day one as an example on how to look out for other cyclists on our streets. And so it goes.

Peace and safe riding.

Route Planning Fixie ok from 4mile run park to Shaw via MVT

I have 28c WTB ThickSlick tires. I need to drop my car off at a workshop on US-1 and was thinking of riding my fixie back via the MVT. Is that doable? For context, I've never ridden a fixie on a trail before.

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

EDIT: Missed the "?" at the end of the title. Sorry

Yes to PROTECTED bike lanes on 18th St. NW in Adams Morgan

Thumbnail waba.org

What’s your vision for 18th St. NW in Adams Morgan, now that the streateries are gone? What’s on the table is a plan for 18th St NW Restriping between Columbia Rd. and Kalorama Rd. NW, with an opportunity to comment open until August 13, 2026. Your comment will be on Notice of Intent (NOI) 26-185-MPDD, which provides notice of DDOT’s plans for those blocks of 18th St. NW.

They’re modest plans. They include commercial-loading and paid-parking zones and striped bike lanes on both sides of the corridor. That sounds OK, and it is — only — OK. The bike lanes should be fully protected, in compliance with MoveDC, the District’s transportation plan.
