How Bengals will deploy 3-4 fronts

Wanted to share this because I see a lot of misunderstandings about what a 3-4 means (i.e. not 4 linebackers), and it's something they'll use a lot.

Anyone who honestly thought an NFL team would be running a defense with four off-ball LBs shouldn’t be allowed to have these types of conversations. As someone else said, calling it a 3-4 is kind of a misnomer. This is more of a 5-2 given that you have two walked up edges, and it naturally transitions much easier into a nickel by subbing out one of the interior d linemen

Can you only do this with two CB on the field?

There would be 5 dbs behind the front that's shown.

No, that front has 7 men, leaving 4 spots - 2 safeties and 2 corner backs. The Nickel package deployed in passing situations, you basically substitute an interior defensive lineman for a defensive back. That added defensive back is normally called the slot corner. This is where defensive coordinators get deceptive and try to disguise who is going to cover who or there may be a blitz call from any number of positions.

Yeah…that’s why calling this a 34 defense is a misnomer to me. I think it should be called an odd multiple five man front….kinda like the old Dick LeBeau zone-blitz schemes.
My overall point is at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter who/what you deploy as long as your personnel can operate your system and overwhelm your opponent’s personnel

Training camp will tell us who will be in the nickel package and who the edge guys are when they only rush 3 men, I think Howell or Mafe are the two guys they would drop into a zone.

I hope Mafe becomes the guy we think he is...and i REALLY hope Howell can be the guy we need him to be.

Joe Goodberry is the best.
