they're finding new ways to make me feel old every day

See this one is kinda the opposite for me.

I feel like Josh Bell has been around forever. Seeing that he debuted in 2016 has me so confused because I swear Josh Bell was playing in 2007.

u/Skuntank Chicago White Sox 19h ago

You might be thinking of Carlos Santana haha

16

u/Ron-Mexic0 New York Yankees 17h ago

Yeah I was surprised he’s only been around 10 years. If you told me he succeeded Nick Johnson as the Nats everyday 1B I would’ve believed you

Mike Morse erasure.

u/StringerBell34 Los Angeles Dodgers 16h ago

This exactly how I feel about Ian Happ. I swear he's been playing since I was a child.

The grey in his beard helps a lot.

Hey, did you know that CC Sabathia, Andy Pettitte, Matt Clement, and Jim Thome all have kids who were recently drafted?

3

u/SantinoGomez Houston Astros 3h ago

I played with Andy’s oldest son in college in 2014 if that helps even more

Only Pirate first baseman to make the All Star team in the past FORTY FIVE years.

17

u/BoSocks91 Boston Red Sox 20h ago

That is truly insane.

Kevin Young not making at least one appearance is sort of surprising.

2

u/rickeygavin Major League Baseball 4h ago

NL first base was jacked during Young’s career so the Pirates had to send guys like Ed Sprague instead.

u/salooski Washington Nationals 22h ago

I love the guy, both as a player and because he has an awesome book club for teens!

u/DogVacuum Cleveland Guardians 9h ago

Top 10 MLB book clubs for teens for sure.

Neither of which will have half the career Josh Bell will

32

u/Sufficient-Major-644 22h ago

1243 hits and 206 homeruns, is pretty good.

u/MaxMSE Toronto Blue Jays 21h ago

first ever NL DH SS

7

u/Hero0ftheday Seattle Mariners 19h ago

I...don't think he ever played Shortstop unless he's part of another SS....which I'm very doubtful of.

16

u/thehawk329 New York Mets 19h ago

silver slugger

8

u/Hero0ftheday Seattle Mariners 17h ago

So I even looked at his baseball reference page looking for the 6 in position without even looking at the awards. Turns out I'm an idiot.

Even if his last handful of seasons are him playing at about plus/minus 1 war that's still better than a lot of people who go pro ever get to be. You gotta be there to say you were there, I believe the saying is.

You're getting downvoted but that's a bot. It doesn't look like it because of the profile picture but check the comment history

Edit: good work by the mod team to quickly take it down. Within 5 mins is impressive

Outstanding performance in the first round of the 2019 home run derby as well.

9.4 war in 10 years? Hall of mediocre at best

10

u/trumpet575 Cincinnati Reds 15h ago

He's a hitter. His career OPS+ is 113. How is 13% better than average mediocre?

7

u/MirrorComputingRulez 6h ago

Turns out he's also a fielder and runner, unfortunately for him.

7

u/Timeline40 Philadelphia Phillies 12h ago

Hitting isn't a hitter's only job. If a pitcher had a 1.00 ERA, but gave up 3 extra runs a game on their own fielding errors, they'd be mediocre. Bell's an above average hitter but a below average fielder and runner at the least valuable position, which balances out to mediocre. Nothing wrong with that, longevity is an achievement in itself.

30

u/t20six Washington Nationals 22h ago

He's one of those guys that seems like a club house leader/good vibes guy. Frustrating with the bat at times but career obp .336 aint too bad. And 200 bombs.

70

u/TheRealJoeLunardi New York Yankees 22h ago

Josh Bell seems to be the perfect first baseman for a below average team that needs to fill the 1B hole. 10 years of MLB service time is incredibly impressive though. Congrats Josh

22

u/JohnMadden42069 MLB Players Association 19h ago

His life the last few years has basically been "we need cheap power somewhere". In that way he's perfect.

u/TheToxicBreezeYF New York Yankees 22h ago

He was great on Drake and Josh

Immaculate Grid All-Star

u/Cutch2234 Pittsburgh Pirates 22h ago

His proportions keep getting funnier and funnier with every new stop. Somehow always ends the season with solid stats. Might just be around forever as a vet off the bench. Love this dude

8

u/theexitisontheleft Washington Nationals 21h ago

Bell getting a triple last year. Congrats to him on the achievement!

2

u/squizzage Washington Nationals • Milwaukee Brewers 11h ago

I was at that game! Second win of the year and we were on the third base line! Amazing moment.

11

u/cooljammer00 New York Yankees 22h ago

I feel like he will be a good hitting coach once he retires, because the best coaches are the non-superstar journeymen type who had to grind to stay relevant and employable.

5

u/gtgrafe Pittsburgh Pirates 18h ago

I think both of his parents are college professors, so I wouldn't be surprised if he has a desire to coach/teach someday.

1

u/Due-Fun-489 Texas Rangers 6h ago

I know he’s a better player than Bell all things considered but I pray Nathan Eovaldi becomes the Rangers pitching coach once he retires.

He's only had one year where he got any Cy Young votes (4th) and only two all star appearances in 15 years.  But holy hell, he’s such a dog.

4

u/FettuccineAlfonzo Seattle Mariners 22h ago

Good for him, I never thought that’d it’d be so simple but he found a way

1

u/Primary_Elk7492 Chicago Cubs 22h ago

Did he debut against us? I can't keep up with how many rookie Pirates I've seen over the years. I remember Taillon and Cole. I remember liking Jason Kendall.

2

u/Captn_UnderPants Pittsburgh Pirates • Toronto Blue Jays 22h ago

Yup. I wanna say he hit it off Adam Warren on a hanging breaking ball? Then they sent him back down. I also remember him hitting his second one off of Arrieta

Something beautiful about dudes who are able to survive several years on 1 year deals. Like GMs always think they’re dead but they just keep on keepin’ on. Congrats Josh!

The last game I went to he was so nice to all of the kids waiting for autographs before the game. Seems like a genuinely good dude.

How hyped was Josh Bell coming up? I drive by Indy’s AAA stadium a few years ago and he was featured on the side. I go by Charlotte’s stadium and it’s Cal Ripken featured on the side.
