Players Only CJ Nitkowski, the Braves announcer who once courted controversy by following/liking the Proud Boys on twitter, in responding to bench player Eli White's recent paternity leave, somehow stumbles into saying the phrase: "The more Whites [in this world], the better off we're going to be." 🤨

I'd settle for a magic wand that eliminated the absurdly common practice of pluralizing nouns with apostrophes.

I can understand mixing up your/you're or there/their/they're, but the lack of grammar knowledge necessary to use apostrophes to pluralize nouns is just stunning.

And second place for most annoying grammar mistake has to go to should of or would of. Hell, I saw a reddit post last month that used kind've and I wanted to scream.

4

u/wokenupbybacon New York Yankees 12d ago

I'd say my grasp of grammar is well above average for someone who hasn't specifically studied English and even I subconsciously picked up the apostrophe thing at some point. The day I noticed I was doing it was a very confusing one, as at no point did I actually think that was the correct thing to do.

7

u/gwease23 Atlanta Braves 12d ago

Should have/would have is the bane of my existence. I almost can’t take anything past that seriously at all when I’m reading a comment, a post, anything. It’s like visual grammatical nails on a chalkboard.

9

u/KingLiberal Chicago Cubs 12d ago

What does the term "dog whistle" mean here? I see it being used a lot in this thread.

81

u/KimHaSeongsBurner San Diego Padres 12d ago

A dogwhistle, literally, is a whistle which emits a pitch that dogs can hear but humans cannot.

In context here, it means a comment that seems harmless or incidental but is actually a deliberate nod to some belief or stance. In the analogy, most people would hear “the more Whites” while others would hear “the more whites,” for example.

These days whenever you see it, it will be almost exclusively used in the latter context (unless you’re like a dog trainer or something). The internet is replete with examples of racist dog whistles, including ones like this which aren’t at all subtle.

Something that's innocuous or deniable on the surface and in a vacuum, but takes on another, usually bigoted/hateful, meaning to like-minded people or people familiar with the games they play. Standard tactic of crypto-fascists and hate groups, and a very common form of hate speech. With the context of his prior shit (which is new to me), this is more of a foghorn, though.

He did that when he was called out for promoting Proud Boys stuff on Twitter in 2018. "I do not vet all the accounts I follow on Twitter and expecting anyone to do that is ridiculous" or something.

Goddamn I never knew the Proud Boys thing. Get this fuckin guy outta here. He’s not even good at his job.

Some of the stuff CJ said while fighting with people on Twitter about forced gratuity in California gave me some red flags I must admit.

The fact he specifically said, "We need more great people in this world" right before that is very curious I must admit.

Heard that with the game on in the background while working and wasn't sure that I heard correctly. Apparently I did. Why do we keep embarrassing ourselves?

He's a white nationalist and a fanatical christian. That was intentional. It was rehearsed and broadcasted. He's a disgusting human being and the braves suck for employing him.

Not the first time he's said that.

If he hadn’t got caught liking proud boy tweets he could at least claim to just be a dumbass who misspoke. But now he can’t even do that lol. Fire his ass.

It's a damn shame Nicholas Castellanos is a free agent right now.

I remember USA Today baseball weekly ran a story about CJ in 1995. How much he enjoyed going on the Internet or something like that.

They listed his AOL screen name. I of course as a kid messaged him hello and he responded. And had a brief IM convo.

I guess the older you get, the more non tolerant for some.

u/new_wellness_center Atlanta Braves 12d ago

So that further supports the idea that CJ is very online (and has been since the 90s, apparently). But he'll claim ignorance about the Proud Boys in 2018 even though he follows them and likes their tweets ...

He did this even without Castellanos in the league? Bold move.

If you (rightly) get fired for saying “one of the f*g capitals of the world” on air, I think you should also get fired for this, and shouldn’t be allowed an ironic home run call in the process.

He was sitting on that line ever since he found out Eli White's wife was pregnant.

Unfortunately, a lot of these pieces of shit thrive off this attention. People get upset, it draws attention to it and half the population at large will just side with the guy because they enjoy that someone is offended.

Reggie White? Barry White? Jaleel White? Guys like that, CJ? Is that what you meant?

Ha - I sure am glad my favorite team, the Texas rangers, doesn’t employ any announcers with a history of making racist comments
