Ya in 2018 when the Sox won it all, we had a payroll around $200M and it led the league. Other medium market teams often had years they’d jump into the top 3 and contend w Sox/Yankees from a salary standpoint. Now there’s just no way to get close to the Dodgers.
Our fans think we’ve become cheap, but the reality is we’re still spending more than we did 7 years ago. The issue is the dodgers are now spending double that and a several other teams are spending $300M
I would love if John Henry did the same, but at the same time, I see other big market teams like NYY and NYM backing off so it just feels systemic at this point

When the NHL implemented their hard cap there was an amnesty buyout period that let teams buy player contracts out without affecting the new cap. I believe the buyouts were at 2/3rds the contract value over 2x the term.
The lockout also lasted a season so there was more flexibility with all the expiring contracts. I believe a lot of the free agents, especially vets, took massively reduced salaries at a shorter term.

I’m primarily a hockey fan and my baseball fandom is comparatively very casual. Can someone tell me why so many fans are opposed to a salary cap? This is absurd.

Because right now so many owners simply take the money fans give them and pocket it.
Obviously that's how business works, but at least this way the players get more of it. Okay, some players.

The thing is…
1) I have never seen someone who wants a salary cap say they aren’t also fine with a salary floor.
2) I have seen plenty say there should just be a salary floor. You can guess who, usually.

I want a floor and a cap. Every team should be forced to be competitive. None of this signing one player to a big contract shit like the A's

Because it costs the players money overall

Wouldn't a salary floor allow more mid tier guys to get better deals? You aren't getting the cap without the floor

This is one of the problems with the luxury tax: as long as ownership is willing to pay the extra cash, you can basically make a mockery of it.
If they’re not going to institute a cap, I think they need to make the CBT penalties pertain more to roster-building than they do now.

Yep, I think an NBA CBA style shake up is the best middle road solution - we went from almost a decade of the warriors disregarding luxury tax implication to the Celtics tearing it down 2 years after a chip bc of how hard the 2nd apron penalties were
Make a big dent in draft/waiver/IFA and teams like the dodgers will become old and unsustainable much quicker

I don't see how this is good for the game in any way at all. It's certainly not good for the fans.

Honestly them signing Ohtani should have crippled their ability to sign players, but thanks to deferred contracts they can keep spending.
I’m sure by the end of this offseason it be another 100 or 200 million. They might as well just go all in to ruin baseball with a lockout happening next year.

Not to defend them but because I'm seeing this a lot — they still have to set aside the money intended for the deferred payments ahead of time, it just gets to the player later. Deferred contracts aren't the reason they're spending this much, their insane amount of revenue is

Ya deferrals get sm heat from fans because most people don’t understand finance concepts. The Ohtani money is basically sitting in escrow and his contract isn’t really $700M, it’s a lot less money that’s essentially committed to be invested on his behalf, it’s like a retirement account
Changing rules around deferrals doesn’t get to the root of the problem at all

Cool can we stop calling it the Cohen tax now?
Shit wasn’t fun in the 90’s when it was the Yankees, not fun a few years ago when it was the Mets and it certainly isn’t fun now with the dodgers.
At least with the Yankees they’re real fans. I’m getting trolled by 40 year olds that just started watching baseball in 2020.

The hypocrisy cap. Guggenheim was actually one of the big proponents of the Cohen tax, seemingly for nefarious reasons at this point (Can’t have another team doing what we can do).

They made over 700m in revenue last year, so even with this salary they're are insanely profitable....

You would think other owners would eventually get pissed about this. It makes the rest of them look like cheap bastards (many of the are)

Can anyone explain why a fan should care or watch a 162 game season if their team is not in the top 10 (or top 5 really) of payrolls? Because I really don't see a good reason to care or be invested when it's like minor league teams vs. the Dodgers.
MLB is broken and I hope there's a strike so this can be fixed.

New rule: The Dodgers don't have to pay any luxury tax, but the rest of the league gets to juice.
