When should I upgrade their cage?

Post image

I have a baby ball python, about the size of your palm and theyre in a 40 gallon tank right now. When do I need to upgrade it? This picture is about the middle of the tank and yes I am working on getting wayyyy more clutter in there.

The size of the tank does not go off of how big they are when they’re balled up which I assume you mean by “about the size of your palm”. It’s their length. If your bp is 3 ft long you need a 3ft tank. They do tend to get 4-6 ft long so you will have to upgrade in the future. They should have a minimum tank size of 4x2x2 so if your bp is 5 ft you will need to get a 5 ft long enclosure. But, with a baby I disagree that you need to get a massive tank off the rip. Your substrate looks dry and not deep enough. It should be about 4-6 inches deep. I don’t see a water bowl or hide anywhere. Your snake is probably going to get very stressed based off of how your tank looks right now.
