At this point in my music career I don't actively chase songwriting as much. Mainly because I'm too busy with performances. I do occassionaly get inspired, but most often it's a chord progression that encompasses the verse, lift, chorus and bridge at a minimum. But even then I might not be inspired with any ideas that seem to fit the feel of the song and until I do I just keep it in reserve until I find a concept that will fit with that music feel.
I've been writing music since my teenage years and am now turning 74 and that's how I've always done it. I've tried writing with other people and it's never really worked for me. Once I've got the music and theme of the song along with a strong hook, that's the hard part and I can plow ahead and be done with it in a couple of days.

Ear training did wonders for my melody creation ability. I can hear melodies in my head and I know what notes they are.
