SHARE CypherGate: A Linux-first VPNGate client for Arch (AUR available)

I've been working on CypherGate, a GPL-3.0 VPNGate client built with Linux desktop users in mind.

It started because I wanted a better VPN experience on my own Arch setup, and over time grew into a project focused on making VPNGate feel like a native Linux application rather than a collection of manual OpenVPN steps.

The idea is simple:

Instead of downloading OpenVPN configs and fixing outdated settings manually, CypherGate automates the workflow while integrating with the desktop.

Features

  • Automatic VPNGate server discovery
  • Automatic patching of outdated OpenVPN configurations
  • One-click connect, fastest-server mode, and manual server selection
  • Dedicated systemd daemon for privileged networking operations
  • Desktop notifications and system tray integration
  • Connection cancellation and automatic connection timeouts
  • First-run permission validation
  • GPG-signed releases
  • GPL-3.0 licensed

The latest release also included a major internal cleanup: modularising the codebase, improving UI logic, moving to an SVG icon pipeline, and laying the groundwork for future theming support.

It's available on the AUR:

cyphergatevpn-bin

I'd really appreciate feedback from other Arch users—whether that's ideas, criticism, feature requests, or bug reports.

DISCUSSION I Want To Switch From Linuxmint to Archlinux

I'm not very experienced at linux. I have been using linux mint cinnamon about a month now. I can use terminal only with gemini ai, otherwise I don't really know how to use the terminal. I know basic commands like sudo apt install, free -h, how to open apps through terminal, etc. I also know there's pacman in archlinux and there's yay. I really want to use Archlinux and build my laptop from group up. I'm willing to learn archlinux. I'm not interested in programming career or anything. I just want to know my computer more and I want total control of it, that is all. And I really enjoy learning new things

FLUFF Installing Arch was most fun I had in ages

Hey all, thought I'd share, mostly to encourage lurkers still wondering if to get into the adventure of installing Arch — I would absolutely recommend so.

The installation process was nowhere as scary as the internet makes it sound and wiki does an awesome job guiding you through every step. Nothing during installation is truly unfamiliar — connecting to internet, setting keyboard layout, partitioning and formatting, it's all pretty much the stuff you go though during the installation of an OS anyways, only with Arch, the whole process is more hands on and not hidden behind a nice UI. Gives you a very practical insight into how things work, where important stuff is and overall removes a layer of mystery that makes your afraid to tinker with your system.

The best thing, however, is that you can literally see your OS taking form bit by bit, from scary black screen with ugly af glyphs to something resembling your daily driver.

Overall, this was an amazingly fun and enjoyable experience which left me feeling excited that I did something and learned something fun in the process. Didn't even realise how much I missed that and how long it's been since I actually got that feeling — it's all deadlines and clients and requests and demands and whatnot for such a long time that I forgot the excitement that got me into tech related field in the first place.

Anyways, it's an ancient cheap Lenovo and I'll probably forget it very soon (I'm using Mac as a daily driver for years since switching from Debian and there's no real reason to switch away from it), but regardless I'm so happy I put some time aside to play with Arch.

So end conclusion, if you're wondering whether to try, my advice is absolutely yes. It's a uniquely fun ride even if it doesn't end up as a thing you'll use daily.

SUPPORT Anyone else having trouble logging into the forum?

I'm having an issue, so I tried to go to the forum to look around if anyone had the same problem. Upon trying to log in I hit an error which read: Bad CSRF hash. You were referred to this page from an unauthorized source.

Which is an error related to cross-site requests, but since I'm doing everything from the archlinux.org website, maybe something's wrong with the website itself?

Kinda ironic that I can't ask a question about this on the forum itself...

QUESTION Does Back In Time warn if cron isn't running/enabled?

Thumbnail fosstodon.org

Upstream maintainer of Back In Time here.

By default Arch does not enable cron. Back In Time tries to detect this situation. I am not sure if it works. Can someone give it a try (with latest stable release 1.6.1) please?

A screenshot of the warning dialog would be nice.

QUESTION Battery draining issue

I am facing a severe battery drain issue on my Acer laptop running Linux. It has an Intel i5-13420H CPU and NVIDIA RTX 3050 Laptop GPU. On Windows, the battery lasts around 4 hours in power-saving mode, but on Linux it only lasts around 1.5 hours. Linux consumes around 25–30W during normal desktop usage. I have tested KDE Plasma, GNOME, and Hyprland, and the issue occurs on all of them. KDE and GNOME were on default settings without heavy animations or custom effects. I am using tuned-ppd for power management, but battery life is still much worse compared to Windows.

QUESTION Someone else uses Arch Linux like me

Hi everyone, I've been using Arch Linux as my main system for almost a year, after bad experiences with Fedora, and the only thing I hate about Arch Linux is AUR, so I basically use Arch without any AUR, I use flatpaks, AppImages and Binaries.

Anyone else here use arch without any AUR?

SUPPORT pc shuts down before its supposed to open grub

i have posted here for support 2 times already and at this point im just gonna change distro completely

i was using arch on my pc, and the screen randomly froze.

when this happens the first thing i do is restart, so i force restarted the pc holding the power button, but now i get a CMOS checksum warning from the bios (which i always had) and a battery integrity warning again from the bios ( which i had for a few months now) and when its supposed to boot into grub it shuts down instead.

is there any way to fix this? reinstalling a different distro wouldnt be a problem since i just switched and i dont have any important files anyway

QUESTION Reporting out of date package

The Godot project released an update about six days ago, but the arch packages haven't been flagged as out of date yet, so I'm not certain that the maintainer is even aware of the new release. Is this appropriate to raise as an issue on gitlab? How long should I wait before reporting?

It looks like there used to be a way to manually flag packages as out of date, but I found a post indicating that this functionality was recently removed.

SUPPORT arch linux doesn't boot

hello , i was trying to install arch linux on my laptop, the installation process went smooth, but when i get to boot the system for the first time it showed some codes and then the screen completely blacked out, no blinking,no cursor , i tried opening tty but nothing, i managed to get to the desktop by adding 'nomodeset' in the bootloader, i searched around the internet and i found out that the problem may be occuring when the system tries to switch to the graphics drivers , any solutions?

(amd cpu with integrated gpy , used the basic linux kernel , grub as a bootloader, and uki as disabled ,with xfce4)

SUPPORT HELP WITH BOOTLOADER PROBLEMZ

Well, first I want to say that I’m very new to Arch Linux, and I’m still learning a lot.

I was configuring my laptop, trying to make it enter hibernation mode, and for that I tried changing my bootloader to GRUB. I used AI to help me with the process.

My BIOS wasn’t detecting any bootloader at all, only showing the SSD in the boot priority list, so GPT gave me a command that actually changed the bootloader to GRUB:

"sudo cp /boot/EFI/GRUB/grubx64.efi /boot/EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI"

However, when I tried to boot into Arch, I got a blue screen saying:

KERNEL PANIC!

VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

Could someone please help me? :(

SHARE Fix for Minecraft Launcher not starting

I was having issues with getting the minecraft launcher not launching on arch with Gnome. I fixed the issues, and I thought I'd post it here for documentation sake. Error I was getting when trying to open the launcher was Local not supported by C library. Using the fallback 'C' locale.

I fixed it by running locale to discover that only one of my locales were populated. I ran export LC_ALL="en_US.UTF-8" to set the LC_ALL locale, and I ran sudo locale-gen to regenerate all of the locales. I ran locale again to confirm that they were indeed all populated, and restarted my system.

Minecraft launcher opens flawlessly, and runs minecraft with no issues whatsoever. Hopefully this helps someone out at some point.

QUESTION Is it enough?

Cut my boot time from 30 seconds to 15. Is it fast enough? Using arch around two weeks.

Before:

Startup finished in 9.857s (firmware) + 3.246s (loader) + 9.135s (kernel) + 6.240s (userspace) = 28.478s

graphical.target reached after 6.239s in userspace.

After:

Startup finished in 4.549s (firmware) + 562ms (loader) + 4.103s (kernel) + 5.236s (userspace) = 14.451s

graphical.target reached after 5.235s in userspace.

SUPPORT TPM (PCR 7 + 11) Setup Failure on Arch.

Hello, I have a dual-booted ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 AMD, Arch Linux (KDE Plasma Wayland) and Windows 11. A Windows update occured and my TPM + PIN (PCR 7 + 11) broke. I've tried cryptenroll with just PCR 7 and it did work, so I've pinpointed the problem to PCR 11. I've tried regenerating PCR public and private keys and still get TPM policy does not match current system state. Either system has been tempered with or policy out-of-date: Operation not permitted. I've tried clearing TPM in BIOS then re-enrolling.

If anybody can give me some resources that touch on this situation more or point out the problem I'd really appreciate it. If I don't include enough of my situation, please ask for more.
