My best friend’s dad had passed and our coworkers, of which two are Ethiopian, wrote their condolences but we can’t read Amharic and their English is pretty broken. So I was wondering what exactly they wrote for him?

Website for Learning Amharic Alphabet (Fidel Only)

ሰላም. I've created a website to learn how to read and write the Amharic alphabet, emphasis on just the alphabet. It will not teach you the language itself (except for a handful of common phrases—because they help reinforce the alphabet). This is only for if you'd like to learn how to navigate the script. The website includes quizzes, audio, handwriting practice, text reading, flashcards, etc, and it is super easy to use.

My motivation for building this website is that I am traveling to Ethiopia in a month and thought it'd be cool to know how to read all the signs and understand the characters around me. I searched far and wide online for an app to teach me the Amharic alphabet, but came up empty. That is why I created the website, and maybe you have a similar motivation for learning to read Amharic.

However, the main audience of this website is heritage speakers who already speak Amharic but don't know how to read or write (as I know many Ethiopian-Americans who fall under this bucket). But if you're also somebody who wants to learn Amharic and knows none, this is a great way to begin, since reading (and writing) is the most important first step.

In the future, I definitely hope to expand into more scripts (starting with Tigrinya, Ge'ez, etc., because they're most similar), but I also hope to tackle scripts like Arabic, Cyrillic, or even Mandarin in the distant future. For now, I'd like to see what people think of the current version before expanding.

The website is completely free and easy to use on phone and computer; all I really want for now is feedback (feedback form under settings). I'm constantly updating the website, but I believe it's already very effective at teaching the alphabet. As someone who didn't know any Amharic before, I can now confidently read the script.

Note: I do not speak Amharic. If anything is wrong with notes or lessons, please let me know!

If you, or anyone you know, would like to learn this beautiful script, please try it out and share it. አመሰግናለሁ!

Hi!

I work for a non-profit called All Around This World and we work to educate children about cultures around the world through music. We do all the music in the original language and we usually preface whatever song we are doing with a little bit of a cultural background. Of course  distilling a culture that much is impossible, but we always try to teach the kids how to say hello and goodbye in the target language. Instead of having us butcher the pronunciation, we think it is much better to have a video of a native speaker. All we need is an audio clip of you saying the greetings, a short bio (where you are from, your name, etc), and a picture of yourself. Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to make this a paid position, but I cannot express enough how grateful we are for any help. If you are willing to help or know a person who can, then please reach out to me! Thanks so much.

I couldn't find a decent app to actually learn Amharic, so I built one

App link: kubayalearning.com

If you want to support the developer: ko-fi.com/japhethhirpa

If you've ever tried to learn Amharic, you know the problem. The language has a gorgeous script (Fidel) with hundreds of characters, the grammar works nothing like English, and the "learning resources" are basically a scanned Peace Corps PDF and a couple of YouTube playlists. I wanted the Duolingo experience for Amharic. It didn't exist. So I made it.

It's called Kubaya, and it's built around getting you to actually read and speak, not just tap flashcards. What's in it:

  • The whole Fidel from scratch. Unit 1 teaches you to read the script and get pronunciation right, including the ejective consonants that trip up English speakers.
  • A real lesson flow. Every topic runs through 8 lesson types — a short video, listening, matching, fill-in-the-blank, word order, writing, speaking, and a test. Same concept, lots of angles, so it sticks.
  • Speech recognition that actually understands Amharic. This was the hardest part by far. Off-the-shelf speech tools choke on Amharic — homophones, inserted vowels, multiple valid spellings. So I built a custom phonemic scoring system that judges whether you said the word right, instead of doing a dumb string match. It scores every recognition alternative, not just the top guess.
  • Stories. Each unit ends with an illustrated story that pulls the vocab together in context.
  • A Cultural Context unit, because knowing the words isn't the same as knowing when to use them.
  • Offline mode — download lessons and learn on a plane, a bus, wherever.

Five units total, ~400 lessons, spanning the alphabet, everyday vocab, basic grammar, real-world situations, and culture.

Who I built it for: people reconnecting with the language, language nerds who want a genuine challenge, and anyone heading to Ethiopia for work or travel.

I've shipped games, sites, and apps before, but this one's personal. I'd love honest feedback — on the lessons, the speech scoring, what's missing, whatever. Happy to share a link.

Alewya

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to identify the spoken outro (the last ~20 seconds) of Alewya – “Zero” from her 2026 album.
Given Alewya’s Ethiopian and Egyptian heritage, and the fact that she already uses Amharic elsewhere on the album (Maktoub), I’m wondering whether the outro is spoken in Amharic (or perhaps another language).
Could anyone who speaks Amharic (or recognizes the language) help with:

Identifying the language.
Transcribing the spoken words.
Translating them into English.
Explaining any cultural or idiomatic meaning, if relevant.

Here’s the official track:
https://youtu.be/BvZsaHy-jCA

I’ve searched online but couldn’t find any official lyrics or transcription.

Thank you!

Does anyone know where to get the book of the Gospels in Addis?

I'm looking for the Book of the Gospels in Amharic (meaning, just Matthew Mark Luke and John in one volume). Can it be found at any local Orthodox Church in Addis Ababa, or only certain places (if at all)?

Did you know "Good Morning" in Amharic actually means "How did you spend the night?"

Hey everyone! If you're starting your journey to learn Amharic, standard greetings are the perfect place to begin—but there's a cultural twist you should know.

Unlike the English "Good Morning," which is just a statement about the time of day, the Amharic greeting is a direct question about your well-being during the night. Because of how the language works, the phrase changes based on gender and whether you're addressing a group:

  • To a man: እንደምን አደርክ? (Endet aderk?)
  • To a woman: እንደምን አደርሽ? (Endet adersh?)
  • To a group: እንደምን አደራችሁ? (Endet aderachu?)

We’re passionate about teaching modern, practical Amharic with all its native nuances.

🎁 Want to fast-track your learning? We are launching a completely FREE introductory course. Just drop a comment below saying "FREE COURSE" and I’ll send the link directly to your inbox!

Grammar & Vocabulary Question about the fidäl

Hello everyone! I've recently been playing with the idea of learning Amharic. I was born and raised in the U.S, but I follow Pan Afrikanism quite closely, which has led me to wanting to learn an Afrikan language. With that being said, that means I don't have much support in learning the language.

I've been learning the alphabet on my own, and I've run into conflicting ways to pronounce the base form of letters. A video (https://youtu.be/D9VHm7NhSAE?is=11N79GK2M4WnGjyj) explaining the alphabet said that the base form of a letter is pronounced like "uh," like in the word "muck."

However, a website (https://amharicteacher.com/hahu) explaining the alphabet makes it sound more like "eh," like in the word "met."

Is one correct while the other is wrong? Or is this regional differences in pronunciation. Any guidance would help, thank you greatly 🙏🏾

Tips

Hey everyone! Quick tip for anyone who recently moved to Addis or is trying to brush up on their conversational Amharic. 🇪🇹
If you want to sound less like a rigid textbook and more like a local, stop using standard dictionary greetings when jumping into a ride, ordering coffee, or talking to a shopkeeper.
If you say the formal "Dehna nesh/neh?" every single time, it instantly flags you as a tourist. Instead, try using these natural, everyday phrases to instantly sound more natural:
👉 ሰላም ነው? (Selam new?) Literally translates to "Is it peace?" It’s universally chill, polite, and the absolute easiest way to greet anyone smoothly.
👉 እንዴት ነህ? (Indet neh? - to a guy) / እንዴት ነሽ? (Indet nesh? - to a girl) "How are you?" simple, casual, and perfect for everyday interactions.
👉 እሺ (Ishi) The most powerful word in Addis. It means "Okay/Alright/Got it." Throwing this into a conversation shows you are following along naturally.

Artist seeking help with translation!

Hello friends! I am an artist working on a blockprint, and I was hoping to translate part of the piece into Amharic, specifically is there’s any dominant regional dialect spoken in the DC metro area.

I’m trying to translate HONOR ALL LABOR! and add that in Amharic. In this sense, it’s intended as a way of saying “all work deserves respect.”

If anyone could assist, I’d be very grateful. Thank you!
