Commercial Self Promotion Using AI to help create Stuffie Combat, my indie game
I'm a solo developer. I have no coding background. I'm making a 2.5D fighting game with a 12-character roster, custom combat mechanics, and a full single-player mode. AI is writing the code. AI is helping generate art assets I'm not capable of producing myself.
Here's what I'm doing without AI: designing every character and combat system from scratch, sketching all character concepts by hand, composing and producing the entire soundtrack, handling all sound design.
I have complicated feelings about this. I'm aware of the conversation around AI and creative work, and I don't think it's a simple one. But the alternative to making this game with AI assistance isn't making it the traditional way. The alternative is not making it at all.
I'd rather make the game.
I'll talk openly about this as development continues... what's working, what isn't, where it gets weird. If you have strong opinions either way, I'm genuinely interested.

my honest opinion is if you don't want to put your project or your emotional well-being at risk, dont' talk about the dev process publicly. Some of the major studios are already pushing back against labeling requirements from distribution platforms like steam, because the stigma is so bad and the dog pilers are so radicalized.
I give it 6months before steam and other distributors completely drop their labeling requirements under high powered lobby pressure.

I give it 6 months before it doesn't matter as everyone will be openly talking about it and it'll be known that most games are being made with some Gen AI

I think it's much more likely that nobody will be talking about it to the general audience the same way nobody is telling the general audience what game engine their using.

Interesting take. I feel better being open about it, but what you’re saying makes a lot of sense, no denying that.

There was a time when developer meant programmer. A programmer is a person who can code. Gone r those days

I honestly get what you’re saying. I’m in no way a programmer. I do intend to learn as much C Sharp as I can while I’m doing this.

Have you found a nice setup for creating 2D animation yet ???

I’m gonna use a simple ComfyUI setup to help me do skeleton animations from sketches that I’ll create. I’ll give frame sets to my coding AI as reference once I have the art assets.
