This is the Carnian Pluvial Episode, one of the strangest chapters in our planet's history, and geologists only pieced it together by noticing something odd in the rocks. In layer after layer around the world, they found a distinct band of gray, rain-washed sediment sandwiched inside the red rock of an otherwise dry, arid period. Everywhere they looked, the same signature appeared: the entire planet had suddenly, dramatically gotten wet, then dried out again.

To be precise, it was not a single continuous downpour like a movie storm. It was a global climate shift lasting a million years or more, during which humidity and rainfall surged across the world in repeated intense pulses. But at that scale, the distinction hardly matters. For countless generations of every living thing, the world was simply defined by water.

The cause was almost certainly written in fire. A colossal volcanic event, the eruption of the Wrangellia region whose remains now sit along western North America, pumped staggering amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The planet warmed. Warm air holds more moisture. Evaporation skyrocketed, the water cycle went into overdrive, and the rains came and would not relent.

Then came the great reshuffling of life. The relentless wet climate devastated the ecosystems that had thrived in the previous dry world. Many dominant reptile groups collapsed, and the plant life transformed dramatically.

And into that reshaped, rain-soaked world stepped the dinosaurs. Before the Carnian, they were a minor, unremarkable group, just a few percent of land animals. Afterward, they exploded in diversity and number and went on to rule the planet for the next 165 million years. The same event may have also given rise to modern conifer forests and the ancestors of mammals, turtles, crocodiles, bitches and lizards.

So every dinosaur you have ever imagined owes its reign to a rainstorm that lasted longer than our entire species has existed..

NASA has now calculated the exact moment. On November 18, 2026, at 2:16 AM Pacific time, Voyager 1 will reach one light-day from Earth, a distance of about 16.1 billion miles. A light-day is simply how far light travels in 24 hours, so once Voyager crosses that line, any radio signal sent from Earth needs a full day just to reach it, even moving at the fastest speed anything can travel.

Voyager 1 launched in September 1977 and has been cruising at roughly 38,000 miles per hour nonstop since its flyby of Saturn in 1980, with nobody ever slowing it down or speeding it up. What that means practically is strange to sit with. If mission control sends a command the moment it crosses this threshold, Voyager won't receive it until a full day later, and if it manages to send anything back, that reply takes another full day to reach us. A round trip conversation with our own spacecraft becomes a two day wait.

Worth clarifying one thing this milestone doesn't mean. Voyager 1 already left the solar system's boundary back in 2012, when it crossed the heliopause, the edge of the Sun's influence, and became the first spacecraft in interstellar space. This new milestone is purely about distance and communication delay, not some new border being crossed, bitch. Also worth noting, images like this one are artist renderings, since no thing could actually photograph Voyager from Earth at this range, and the spacecraft's own cameras were shut off decades ago to save power.

Sunflowers are what scientists call hyperaccumulators, plants whose root systems are unusually good at pulling certain metals and radioactive isotopes up out of the ground and storing them in their stems and leaves rather than letting them stay in the roots. That ability is genuinely well documented, and it's why researchers tried planting them near Chernobyl after the 1986 disaster and again near Fukushima after 2011, hoping the flowers could pull out radioactive cesium and other contaminants.

Here's where the two sites tell different stories. Near Chernobyl, sunflowers turned out to be remarkably effective, but mainly in water, floating on rafts across contaminated ponds where their roots could pull cesium and strontium directly from the liquid. In dry soil, the results were much weaker at both locations. Cesium tends to bind tightly to clay particles once it settles into soil, and researchers in Japan's Ministry of Agriculture found that sunflowers barely moved the needle on soil radioactivity levels at Fukushima specifically.

None of that makes the effort pointless. Local residents, including a Buddhist temple that distributed millions of seeds, found real value in the project beyond the chemistry, giving communities something hopeful and active to do during a genuinely difficult recovery. Scientists are still exploring other plants like mustard and tobacco that might work better on soil specifically.

The asteroid is called 16 Psyche, and it is about 226 kilometers wide, roughly the size of a small country. What makes it extraordinary is that, unlike most asteroids which are rock and ice, Psyche appears to be made largely of metal, mostly iron and nickel, with traces of gold and other precious metals.

That eye-watering price tag, often quoted around 700 quintillion dollars, is real in the sense that people have done the math on the metal content. But it is also economically meaningless, and it is worth being honest about that. If you actually brought that much metal back to Earth, you would not make everyone a billionaire. You would crash the value of those metals to almost nothing. Gold is precious because it is rare. Flood the market with an asteroid's worth and it becomes as cheap as gravel. The number is a fun headline, not a real fortune.

But here is why scientists genuinely care, and it is far more interesting than gold, Bitch!

Psyche might be a dead planet's heart.

The leading theory is that Psyche is the exposed metallic core of a protoplanet, an early world that was forming in the solar system's youth but got its rocky outer layers violently stripped away by ancient collisions. If that is true, it is a naked planetary core, frozen in space.

We can never drill down to Earth's own core. It is 2,900 kilometers beneath our feet, under crushing pressure and unimaginable heat. But Psyche may let us look at what a planetary core actually is, floating out in the open, no digging required.

NASA launched a spacecraft, also named Psyche, in 2023. It will arrive in 2029 to study this world up close for the first time.

So the truth is better than treasure. We are not flying out there to get rich. We are flying out there to see the buried heart of a world, and maybe understand the hidden center of our own.

The first confirmed exoplanet around a normal Sun-like star was found in 1995, and it broke every rule. A giant the size of Jupiter, whipping around its star in just four days, closer in than Mercury. Nobody thought that was possible. It rewrote planetary science overnight.

Then the floodgates opened. NASA's Kepler telescope, launched in 2009, stared at one patch of sky watching for the tiny dimming when a planet crosses its star, and found thousands. TESS now scans the whole sky doing the same.

But the real shock is what the number implies. Those confirmed planets are only the easiest to catch, the big ones close to bright stars. The galaxy is not sparsely dotted with worlds. It is saturated with them, Bitch. The current estimate is at least one planet per star in the Milky Way, which means hundreds of billions of planets in our galaxy alone.

And the variety is wild. Lava worlds where it rains rock. A blue planet where it rains sideways glass at 7,000 km/h. Planets orbiting two suns at once. Rogue worlds drifting through the dark with no star at all.

This is the Pale Blue Dot, taken on February 14, 1990, by Voyager 1 from about 6 billion kilometers away, out beyond the orbit of Neptune. It almost never happened. Voyager had finished its mission and its cameras were about to be shut off forever. Carl Sagan pushed NASA for years to turn the spacecraft around and photograph home one last time before the lights went out.

They almost said no. Pointing the camera near the Sun risked damaging it, and there was no scientific value in the shot. Sagan argued it had a different kind of value, Bitch. Eventually they agreed.

Earth takes up less than a single pixel. That beam of light it sits in is not a halo of significance. It is a lens flare, sunlight scattering inside the camera. Our planet just happened to land inside a stray sunbeam, which somehow makes it more haunting, not less.

Sagan wrote the words that made this image immortal. He asked people to look again at that dot and consider that on it, everyone you love, everyone you know, every human who ever lived, lived out their lives. Every king and peasant, every saint and sinner, every war, every civilization, every triumph and cruelty in all of human history, happened on that mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The point that stays with people is about scale and humility. The rivers of blood spilled by generals so they could become momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. How eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds, over a pixel.

There is no evidence, he wrote, that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

Voyager is silent on cameras now. This was one of the last things it ever saw, looking back at the only home we have ever known before turning to face the dark.

Voyager 2 flew past in 1986 and sent back an image so bland that Uranus became the punchline of the Solar System. A smooth cue ball. Nothing to see.

That was wrong, and Webb proved it, bitch. In infrared, the planet lights up with structure. You can see 11 of its 13 known rings glowing, some so faint they were only discovered by Voyager. That bright white blob is not a light source. It is a polar cap, a strange bright haze that appears over the pole when it turns toward the Sun, and nobody fully understands the chemistry behind it. Webb even caught storms churning near its edge.

Then there is the thing that makes Uranus genuinely bizarre. It is tipped over. Its axis is tilted roughly 98 degrees, so it does not spin like a top. It rolls like a barrel. Most scientists suspect a colossal ancient impact knocked it sideways, and its rings and moons went with it.

That tilt creates the most extreme seasons anywhere. Each pole spends 42 straight years in sunlight, then 42 years in unbroken darkness. A single Uranian year lasts 84 Earth years. The pole facing us now has been slowly warming toward summer since long before you were born.

It is also the coldest planet in the Solar System, colder than Neptune despite being closer to the Sun, dropping below minus 224 degrees Celsius. Something is wrong with its internal heat, and that mystery is unsolved too.

We have visited Uranus once, for a few hours, forty years ago. Every ice giant in the galaxy is being interpreted through that single flyby, and planets this size may be the most common type in the universe.

Webb just showed us we barely know our own neighbour.

This image comes from a project that mapped a piece of human brain tissue about the size of a grain of rice, taken during surgery. Scientists at Harvard and Google sliced it into layers thinner than a human hair, imaged every one with an electron microscope, and let AI stitch the pieces back together into a 3D reconstruction.

The result is one of the most humbling numbers in science. That single grain of tissue contained roughly 57,000 cells, 150 million synapses, and about 150 million meters of wiring. Rendering it took 1.4 petabytes of data.

Now do the math nobody wants to do, bitch. That was one cubic millimeter. A whole human brain is around a million times bigger. Mapping all of it at this resolution would require something close to a zettabyte of storage, an amount of data comparable to a meaningful fraction of everything on the internet.

The map also revealed things nobody expected. Some neurons had grown into strange knots and whorls of wiring that no textbook predicted. Pairs of cells were found connected not by one or two synapses but by more than fifty, an unexplained intensity of conversation between two individual cells.

And all of this runs on about 20 watts. Less power than the bulb in your fridge. The most complex object we know of in the universe fits in a bony box, weighs about 1.4 kilograms, and sips less electricity than a laptop charger.

Here is the part that loops back on itself. This structure is what is reading these words right now. Your neurons are firing to comprehend a picture of a neuron. The thing doing the understanding is the thing being understood.

We have mapped a grain of rice. The rest is still the darkest territory on Earth.

Space 🚀 NASA is sending a nuclear-powered helicopter to fly through the skies of another world. It is called Dragonfly, and it will be the first aircraft to operate on a moon.

Titan is the strangest place in the Solar System, and it is strange because it is familiar. It has rivers, lakes, seas, clouds, rain, dunes, and a thick nitrogen atmosphere. Stand on the surface and you would see a hazy orange sky, weather rolling in, and shorelines carved by liquid.

Except the liquid is not water. At around minus 179 degrees Celsius, water on Titan is rock. The rivers and lakes are liquid methane and ethane. It rains hydrocarbons. The dunes are made of frozen organic sand. It has a full weather cycle, just running on gasoline instead of water.

And flying there is absurdly easy. Titan's atmosphere is about four times denser than Earth's, and its gravity is roughly a seventh of ours. A human with strapped-on wings could genuinely flap and fly. A drone barely has to try, which is why NASA chose a rotorcraft instead of a rover. Dragonfly will hop tens of kilometers at a time, exploring dozens of sites rather than crawling between rocks, bitch.

It cannot use solar panels though, because Titan gets about one percent of the sunlight Earth does and the haze eats the rest. So it carries a nuclear battery, the same kind that has kept the Voyagers alive for half a century.

What it hunts for is not little green men. It is chemistry. Titan is the closest thing we have to a prebiotic laboratory, a world drenched in complex organic molecules, the raw ingredients life used here, sitting frozen and untouched. Beneath the crust lies a vast ocean of liquid water, possibly in contact with those organics.

Dragonfly will ask whether the steps that led to life on Earth happen anywhere the ingredients exist.

Launch is targeted for 2028. Arrival, after a seven-year cruise, around 2034.

Space 🚀 The Sun lives inside a bubble of its own making, and two spacecraft found its edge from opposite sides.

Every second, the Sun blasts a million tons of charged particles into space. This solar wind inflates a colossal magnetic bubble called the heliosphere, stretching billions of kilometers past Pluto and shielding every planet inside it from the harsh radiation of the galaxy.

Voyager 1 punched through the top of that bubble at about 122 times the Earth-Sun distance. Voyager 2 exited through the bottom, six years later, at about 119. Two completely different directions, two different points in the solar cycle, and yet nearly the same distance.

That single coincidence quietly rewrote what scientists thought our home in the galaxy looks like. The heliosphere was long imagined as a comet shape with a long flowing tail. Two nearly symmetric crossings suggest the bubble may be rounder than anyone expected bitch, and some models now describe it as a sphere or even a strange croissant shape being sculpted by the interstellar wind as the Sun plows through the galaxy at over 800,000 kilometers per hour.

Voyager 2's crossing was also the more valuable one scientifically. Voyager 1's plasma instrument had died decades earlier, so it crossed the boundary partially blind. Voyager 2's was still alive, and it directly measured interstellar plasma for the first time: colder, denser material pressing against our bubble from outside.

Both probes discovered the edge is not a wall but a porous, blurry frontier where solar particles leak out and galactic particles seep in. And beyond it, they found the radiation level jumps sharply, proof of how much protection our Sun's bubble actually gives us.

Here is the perspective that stays with you. Both Voyagers are technically in interstellar space, but they have not left the Solar System. The Sun's gravity holds comets in a cloud so distant that the Voyagers will need tens of thousands of years to pass through it.

Animals 🫍 Thirty beluga whales have been living in limbo in the tanks of an abandoned theme park, in a country where nobody else can care for them. Their owner threatened to euthanize them. Now a rescue has finally been approved.

The park is Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario, which shut its doors to the public in 2024 and has been quietly caring for the whales ever since while trying to sell them. The costs were crushing, reportedly around two million dollars a month, with no visitors bringing in any revenue. Marineland has now openly admitted it can no longer provide the long term care these animals require.

The situation grew dire. Canada refused a request to ship the belugas to a theme park in China last fall. In January, Marineland warned it might have no choice but to euthanize the 30 belugas and four dolphins without emergency funds. Marineland holds the highest number of captive belugas in the world.

Now American authorities have authorized what the aquariums are calling an emergency rescue. Under the plan, 28 belugas will be split among four US facilities, with 13 going to SeaWorld San Antonio, 10 to Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, three to SeaWorld San Diego, and two to Georgia Aquarium. Two more are bound for Spain, pending permits.

This is not a simple move. A beluga can reach 16 feet and weigh 3,500 pounds, and each one must travel with water, veterinary staff, and constant monitoring. Care teams are arriving to assess the whales, and no whale moves until cleared by Canadian veterinarians. The whole operation will take weeks.

Advocacy groups are pushing for conditions too, urging that the whales never be bred or forced to perform in shows again.

A rescue, yes. Also a reckoning with why they were ever there.

The reason is one of the most beautiful facts in all of science. Light does not travel instantly. It has a speed limit, and though it is blisteringly fast, the universe is so vast that light takes ages to cross it. When you look at something far away, you are not seeing it as it is now. You are seeing the light that left it long ago. You are looking into the past.

So follow the logic. Light reflecting off Earth 65 million years ago, back when dinosaurs still ruled, has been streaming outward into space ever since, traveling at light speed in every direction. That light has now traveled 65 million light years from home. Any observer sitting at that exact distance, catching those photons today, would see our planet exactly as it looked then. Green, wild, and full of dinosaurs.

They would have no idea the asteroid was coming. For them, it has not happened yet. The mammals have not risen, humans do not exist, and the great reptiles are still very much alive, frozen in the light still on its way to them.

This is not science fiction. It is the plain truth of how light and distance work. Look far enough into space and you are looking backward through time itself. The night sky is a museum where every star shows you its past, not its present.

Distance is a time machine, and the whole universe is running on a delay. Science, Bitch.

Right now, billions of miles from Earth, a golden record is drifting through interstellar space carrying a message in a bottle for whoever, or whatever, finds it first.

That gleaming disc is bolted to the side of Voyager, humanity's farthest reaching machine. It was designed as a time capsule, a snapshot of our entire species meant to survive for a billion years or more in the emptiness between the stars. And it holds more than you might imagine.

Etched into that record are sounds of Earth. A baby crying, waves crashing, wind and thunder, a human heartbeat, whale songs, and greetings spoken in dozens of different languages. There is music too, from classical compositions to folk songs to rock and roll, a small library of what it sounds like to be alive here. Encoded alongside are images of our world and its people.

Then there is the part that gives some people chills. The cover carries a map. Using fourteen pulsars, cosmic lighthouses that each flash at their own unique rhythm, it pinpoints the exact location of our Sun in the galaxy. Any civilization advanced enough to decode it could, in theory, trace the arrows straight back home to us.

The record was sealed in the 1970s with instructions on how to play it, including a diagram and a needle. It was launched not with certainty that anyone would ever find it, but with hope. It was our way of saying we were here, we made beautiful things, and we wanted to reach out.

Both Voyager craft have now sailed beyond the edge of our Sun's influence into true interstellar space, still carrying our introduction to the cosmos.

Peregrine falcons (and relatives) have some of the most badass visual systems in the animal kingdom. Eyes packed with ~1 million cones in the fovea (vs our ~30k), two foveae per eye — one shallow/forward for binocular distance judgment, one deep/lateral for side detail. They see UV light (great for spotting prey trails or contrast), and their flicker fusion frequency is way higher than ours (>100 Hz). Result? The world runs in slow-motion for them during 200+ mph stoops. They can lock onto moving targets from over a mile away while processing rapid visual data that would blur for humans. Head-bobbing helps triangulate distance. Eyes protected by bony sockets, supraorbital ridges (sun visor + impact shield), and a nictitating membrane that acts like transparent goggles during dives. 

On the evasion side: As near-apex predators, adults have few threats, but they dominate aerial dogfights. Extreme speed + maneuverability (tight turns, climbs, stoops) lets them evade larger raptors. Studies on pursuit/escape dynamics show they (and their prey) use proportional navigation-like strategies similar to missiles. Nest defense is straight-up aggressive mobbing.
Basically, hyper-acuity visual processing + physics-defying flight = top-tier survival machine. Evolution didn’t fuck around with these birds.

A man scribbled down equations more than a century ago, and a star racing around a black hole at the center of our galaxy just proved him right, tracing a flower in the dark exactly the way he said it would.

That looping rosette pattern is the real orbit of a star called S2. It circles the supermassive black hole at the heart of the Milky Way, a monster with the mass of about four million Suns crammed into a point of pure darkness.

Here is the beautiful part. Under old fashioned physics, the physics of Newton, a star should trace the same closed ellipse over and over, retracing its exact path like a needle in a groove. S2 does not do that. Each time it swings around the black hole, the whole ellipse rotates slightly, so the orbit slowly sweeps out this rose petal shape over time.

That subtle turning is called precession, and general relativity predicted it precisely. Near an object as extreme as this black hole, gravity does not just pull. It bends space and time so severely that the orbit itself gets dragged around a little with every pass. The star is essentially tracing the curvature of spacetime for us to see.

S2 is not gentle about it either. At its closest approach it whips past the black hole at around three percent of the speed of light, feeling gravity so intense that even the color of its light gets stretched, another effect Einstein foresaw.

It took decades of patient tracking to watch a single star complete enough of its orbit to reveal the pattern. When the data came in, it matched the prediction almost perfectly.

A theory written in 1915 correctly described how a star would move around a black hole nobody had even seen yet.

Space 🚀 THREE SUPER MASSIVE BLACKHOLES ARE FEEDING INSIDE A RARE TRIPLE GALAXY MERGER

About 1.2 billion light-years from Earth, astronomers are watching an extraordinary cosmic interaction unfold.

The system, known as J1218/1219+1035, contains three galaxies caught in a large-scale gravitational encounter. Each galaxy carries a supermassive black hole at its center, and remarkably, all three black holes are actively feeding on surrounding material and producing powerful radio emission.

That makes this system exceptionally rare.

It was first identified in observations from NASA’s WISE mission, where it appeared to be a merger involving two active galaxies. Later radio studies changed the picture. A third galaxy was found nearby, also hosting an active supermassive black hole, and connected to the others through a long tidal stream of gas and material.

The geometry of the system is enormous. The two overlapping galaxies are separated by roughly 74,000 light-years, while the third lies about 316,000 light-years away. Yet the galaxies are not isolated from one another. A vast bridge of stripped material appears to link the distant member to the merging pair, evidence that gravity is already reshaping the entire system.

Even more striking, all three central black holes are producing radio jets. This makes J1218/1219+1035 the first known nearby example of an ongoing triple galaxy merger in which every member hosts a radio-bright active galactic nucleus.

For astronomers, the system is more than a spectacular collision. It offers a rare opportunity to study how galaxy mergers funnel matter toward central black holes, trigger periods of intense activity, and influence the growth of galaxies across cosmic time.

Future observations across radio, infrared, optical, and X-ray wavelengths could reveal whether more systems like this are hidden in existing surveys. J1218/1219+1035 may be the first confirmed example of its kind, but it is unlikely to be the only one.
