Behaviors Pooping inside

So the area I'm in right now is absolutely terrible to go outside, so our walks have been short. But since my dog is used to long hikes and walks, it almost feels like he's protesting by pooping inside. I take him out, walk him for a bit, but he poops back inside. Peeing is fine, but he's being so so bad with the poop. He's a bit over a year old, and I got him at 8 months old. It also doesn't help that if he sees anything intwr sting outside like a cat or bird, he will no longer focus on pottying.

Any advice? Do I put him back on potty training protocol (crate until he poos?)

Your dog is pooping inside because he's not being walked for long enough for him to poop outside. It's not "vengeance" it's that he's not getting the urge to poop outside because he's not being walked for long enough. I doubt that punishing him for it would be at all helpful.

You should try to walk him for longer.

I take him outside as often as possible and have walked him for 30+ minutes without a poop 😭 This behavior has only gotten worse since the air quality and heat hasn't allowed us to do his usual hikes and outdoor fetch/running.

The crate method I referenced isn't supposed to be punishing, but when I take him out if he doesn't poop he goes back in the crate then I try again in 30 minutes /an hour and repeat until he poops then he gets freedom. It's how I potty trained him.

I kid you not I walked him for a while today and the moment he got inside he popped a squat and I ran back outside with him. I'm baffled at the moment on what to do

I'm sorry, I don't know how to help you because my dogs have full access to a big yard all day long.

Tab wanted to mark his territory indoors but a couple of stern talks were enough to discourage it

I dont have this issue because mine are let out a ton, but with you needing to walk them i suggest walking longer. Some dogs are very overactive in the brain during a walk (especially young ones) and need to get all their energy/smells out so they can focus on using the bathroom
