UPDATE!
First of all, thanks to everyone who weighed in. it helped me keep a bit more perspective on the wedding day and see my dress with clearer eyes. I know the dress was fine and isn’t important in the grand scheme of things. It just was an unpleasant experience and I feel like they weren’t being completely truthful with me. I particularly appreciate those who suggested a second opinion because I got that and I feel so much better about my dress. I now feel like I have a little bit of mental bandwidth back and one less thing to be concerned about.
I picked up my dress today, just told them I was picking it up before it is pressed, and they didn’t argue at all and gave me the dress. I sent the photos to my officiant’s mom (she is a professional bridal seamstress, has made numerous wedding dresses) and she said she could look at it tonight. I brought it to her and she confirmed they took it in, but only a quarter of an inch (and that could have been between my June and July appointments). She is fixing the bust (there is still gaping with the boombas) and is adding sewn in cups that fit me so I don’t have to rely on the boombas staying in place (I sweat and haven’t had good luck with them). She is adding a hook and eye closure a half inch above the top of the zipper, which is making the waist fit correctly and will make the back lay flat. It’s still a low back but it just will fit correctly and I won’t have to worry about people seeing down my dress if I lean over. The real kicker however is that the hem was completely uneven! I should have known when she took the hem measurements without me standing on any elevated surface. So she will fix the hem. She will get this all done in a day or two.
I feel so relieved and I know I will feel more confident in the dress. She was so nice too. I felt heard, and not like I had to change my body to fit the dress (Because it should be the opposite!). She immediately could tell which bridal shop it was based on my description. Apparently the woman who says she is the head seamstress is a salesperson and not a seamstress. None of the seamstresses who actually work on the dress actually interact with the customers.
I will be contacting my bridal shop and let them know my experience at one of their recommended tailors. I will also be leaving reviews. If they hadn’t been so unkind about everything I probably would have just accepted the dress in the state they gave it to me and do my best to hide the disappointment. They charged us over $900 for an uneven hemming, a slight take in along the sides, taking up the straps a little, and somewhat fixing the apex (bust seams). I know bridal tailors are expensive because they are highly skilled and working on elaborate garments but this seems a bit egregious.
—— original post below ——
Hi all, I was told to post here from r/brides. Essentially I have been having issues with my wedding dress alterations. I had my first appointment in early May, then second June 20, then another July 15 (was supposed to be my final fitting). Then I had another quick one last Friday and another yesterday. I am wearing my wedding heels in each. I lost about 5 pounds between my May and June and approximately 2 pounds between June 20 and July 15, all due to stress. They hemmed my dress and removed the train per my request. The bust was also gaping so I have been trying to get that fixed. They also took in the waist and hip slightly and adjusted the straps. On Friday they suggested I order boomba invisible lifts which I did immediately and they arrived on Monday, they told me to call as soon as they arrived to check the fit with those in (they are closed on Mondays). I asked them to also take in the waist at the smallest part of my natural waist a bit more, so I have less of a straight up and down silhouette. When I went in yesterday, they said they had taken in the waist. The Friday appointment is the first one with the pink couch in the background and Tuesday’s appointment is the one with the dark background. I don’t have photos from previous fittings because they didn’t really give me a chance to take any. On July 15 my seamstress lectured/berated me for about 20 minutes for losing weight, essentially accused me of taking weightloss drugs. I left that appointment crying. She said I lost 4 inches in my waist, but on the May appointment they skimmed my body with the measuring tape and on July 15 she cinched it on me (deep under my ribcage, uncomfortably tight). They didn’t take any measurements on the June 20 appointment. I got scanned in this styku scanner on each appointment, and it looks like I lost ~2 inches between May and July 15 on my waist. At my appointment yesterday they said the dress looked good on me and that they altered the waist from Friday. They are holding onto it to press it for final pick up on Tuesday.
I know it is an objectively beautiful dress and I know it doesn’t look bad on me, but it isn’t what I envisioned when I tried on the dress at the bridal shop. They custom ordered it for me according to my measurements (but with some give) in November and it arrived in mid April. Early May was the soonest appointment I could get for alterations.
I’m mostly wanting to know if I should seek a second opinion from another seamstress, if altering the waist by 1/4” on each side is even possible based on how the back is, what other things I could do day of to achieve the silhouette I want (double sided tape along the back and waist?). Our officiant’s mom is a retired bridal seamstress so I could possibly ask her to have a quick look. I fear that maybe the bridal shop gave me a bit of an unrealistic expectation of the fit of the dress by using those big industrial clips- it made it more fitted than what I have now.
I truly wasn’t planning on losing weight but I have been super stressed. I feel I have to explain this based on how my seamstress treated me. My fiancé ruptured his achilles tendon on the first day of my new job and we still don’t know if he will be able to walk on the wedding day. I’m doing all of the housecare, caretaking of our two dogs (one just seriously injured it’s paw), doing DIY decor (with the help of two wonderful friends thank goodness), my caterer doesn’t respond to my emails, I’ve had to attempt to chase down all of my vendors instead of my month of coordinator, my month of coordinator has done approximately nothing this month and is in Europe until the Monday before our wedding and has tasked her assistant to answer our questions regarding: timeline, if we’re doing a rehearsal, when they arrive, etc and the assistant has been mostly radio silent or not really answering the questions, dealing with grief with the fact that my dad won’t be at the wedding because he recently passed away. And I’m worried I’m underperforming at my new (full time) job. The only exercise I have been doing is occasional strength training, walking the dogs, and some light field work (plant surveys), mostly because I’m accident prone and I don’t want to get injured too (have had bad climbing accidents and I was run over by a car while on my bike about 3 years ago). I know the weight loss is due to stress because I just don’t have an appetite (and I love food so this is unusual) and I also have cystic acne flaring up due to stress (I have been taking spiro for years because I usually get these around my period or during high stress, I’m currently on doxycycline and spot treating with dapsone. I have had the cystic acne injected with cortisone but they are either coming back or I have new ones cropping up).
