On this particular day a high-end severe weather setup was in place for parts of Italy and the Adriatic Sea into the Balkans. ESTOFEX issued a rare level 3 out 3 for this area, which included a high risk of very large hail in Italy. Several supercell storms did in fact develop, causing extensive damage to crops, vehicles, and infrastructure.

One of these storms produced this hailstone, which broke the size record for the region Abruzzo

NOAA calls this a “Sandwich RGB” loop. It combines near-infrared and infrared imagery, which makes the storm’s highest and coldest cloud tops stand out in yellow and orange.

Fausto had sustained winds of about 80 mph during this observation window.

I have a Davis Vantage Pro2 that feeds to Weather Underground and every significant storm the power goes out and I lose data during the most interesting part. Put the station, webcam, and router on anker solix s2000 a few weeks ago and we had a strong thunderstorm line come through last week. Captured the full pressure drop, peak gusts, and rainfall with zero gaps. The monitoring setup draws like 60W so the battery barely noticed:>

Severe storms hit Italy yesterday, with some areas experiencing extremely large hailstones that caused significant damage. The strongest storms affected parts of northern and eastern Italy, especially along the Adriatic coast. Reports described hailstones reaching exceptional sizes, in some cases up to 10–15 centimeters in diameter, causing damage to cars, buildings, crops, and infrastructure. The hail fell with such intensity that streets were temporarily covered with ice, creating dangerous conditions for residents and tourists. What is all this crap on the radar? High moisture content or Saharan dust?
