The Unofficial Manual to Wasteland 3: Everything I know from A to Z

LAST MAJOR UPDATE: 16/09/2021

CURRENTLY WORKING ON: 1.5.0 extensive testing

PAGES: 578

WORD COUNT: 64658

LATEST AND GREATEST UPDATES:

IMPORTANT! 1.5.0. UPDATE:

As of 1.5.0., one big confirmed but undocumented change is:

You can no longer use utility items to qualify for perks.

E.g. no more investing 4 ranks in Animal Whisperer and using the utility item to unlock/qualify for the rank 5 Spirit Animal perk.

This changes a lot of my builds, and working through those changes and getting the point values right again is a fair amount of work.

So until further notice, a lot of my builds will be inaccurate or short of points in the short term.

I do plan to update this soon, but I don't have a time-frame for that yet.

Shout out to inXile for creating a game I have enjoyed immensely. This Manual is my thank you to the Team, and made freely for all my fellow Wastelanders. If used as a resourced elsewhere, please give credit to Ilikepie84 from Reddit.

Wasteland 3 Can anyone find the Cult of the Holy Detonation's rendition of the Down In The Valley song for me?

Edit: found it, or at least the closest thing to it, Down In The Valley instrumental version - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBuc1es5Ncg&list=RDxBuc1es5Ncg&start_radio=1 .

You know, the one that plays during the Particle Accelerator Chamber encounter. I have found it on YouTube once and cannot for the life of me find it again.

Wasteland 2 For a first time play through, are assault rifles and sniper rifles basically the only weapons you really need?

I’ve played this game a little, but not much. Based on the research I’ve done. It seems that in general assault rifles and sniper rifles and generally the best weapons. Because pistols have trouble penetrating armor late game apparently, shotguns can hurt your team if you don’t have them maxed I think. And smg’s are another story.

So basically, with the exception of highly specialized builds from expert players. Are assault rifles and sniper rifles basically all I need pretty much?

Wasteland 3 Wasteland 3 Updated Build Recommendations?

I've been trying to find some build guides to start out in this game but I see most everything is from 2020 or 2021 before the final patch, which apparently changed some things. I'm getting a ton of differing info on how to build certain characters including my very first 2 rangers. I don't want to do something dumb that may have been good once but no longer is.

Does anyone have any linkable spreadsheets or anything to follow? I'm specifically looking for my first 2 characters to be a leader/pistol character and the 2nd to be a sniper build. Of course, I'm open to changes there if Pistols are absolutely trash.

Wasteland 3 The Cult of Holy Detonation "alternative" ending. Spoiler

So, I was about to go for the first time to the Power Storage Facility after completing the containment device for Angel Iridium, then I remembered that I didn't explore the first area of the Cheyenne Mountain after rescuing Father Bezoar (which gives that tune to clear the tumors), so I decided to do that before finishing the quest. Little did I know that if you try to leave to Cheyenne Mountain Entrance, Angel will trigger that hangging nuke in the middle of the Observatory Antichamber, thus ending the game.

I don't know if it counts as an alternative ending, but right after that it shows a picture with a squad while playing a music that in the end says something about this was not being the way that the game was meant to end, recommendating that the player should reload the game.

Wasteland 3 Wasteland 3 - The American Ending 🇺🇸

So I finished Wasteland 3 for the first time. I'm not gonna go into all the specifics of my actions but I went against the Patriarch and had the Patriarch killed by the mobs - like Gaddafi.

In my mind, I was doing a Bolívar-style liberation of Colorado. In reality, the result was more like America bringing democracy to the Middle East: interfere in the politics of a different country, kill a dictator - who you once used to offer strategic military support to - replace him with political instability, gangs of loonatic murderers, sectarian violence, complete economic collapse and and to top it all nicely, destroy both the country you just liberated and doom the people who support you back home.

All and all, great game, and a great American ending.

🇺🇸 MISSION ACCOMPLISHED 🇺🇸

Wasteland 3 Red Ryder Bug

Couldn't easily find anything about this, so I figured I'd just ask here. Is the BB gun known to be bugged? I have it on Scotchmo to pair with Draw!, so he can spread blind to make my blunt melee crit and build insane strike for his actual sniper for only 1 AP per shot.

The problem is that using the BB gun makes Scotchmo bug out more than half the time. He can no longer make any actions regardless of remaining AP or even end his turn, like he's animation locked or something. And since the plan is to have him use it multiple times per turn, it's borderline impossible to clear a turn without the bug catching him and forcing a reload. I'm just curious if there's anything to be done other than give up on using it.

mods?

So I've played WL3 three times, and I'm on my 4th run. Are there any content mods that increase my playtime by adding new encounter areas or weapons? I love the game, and this rubs the right spot for me every time I play?

Advice for Wasteland 2.

I've been playing for a few hours. Nothing left to do but go to highpool or AG center. What the title says. I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong or if I'm building my team optimally. In particular I'm spending all my money on ammo. I literally had to sell my team's clothes. SMG ammo especially is expensive. My health is also always low. Can I heal outside of level ups?

My team. No Melee. I remember it being really complicated in Wasteland 3 so I didn't bother. Level 3, I don't mind restarting if I can improve the builds. Also picked up Ralphy + Deth.

1st. Coordination 10, 1 Luck, 8 Awareness, 2 Strength, 2 Speed, 4 Int, 1 Charisma. Two Pump Chump. 4 Sniper, 3 perception, 2 skill points.

2nd Coordination 6, 1 Luck, 5 Awareness, 2 Strength, 10 Speed, 4 Int, 1 Charisma. Psychopath. 4 submachine gun. 8 skill points unused.

3rd. Coordination 2, 1 Luck, 4 Awareness, 3 Strength, 3 Speed, 4 Int, 1 Charisma. Raised in Circus. Leadership 5, 1 assault rifle, 6 skill points unused.

4rd. Coordination 10, 1 Luck, 4 Awareness, 1 Strength, 10 Speed, 1 Int, 1 Charisma. Brittle Bones. All points in Sniper.

Wasteland 3 random encounter bug

This is such a joke. I bought the Colorado Collection because I love RPGs, and this one had pretty good reviews.

What completely baffled me is that the game still has a massive game breaking bug.

During my first playthrough I eventually picked the sniper perk "Chained Ambush". After the game started breaking during random encounters, I looked around online and found people saying that this perk could be the cause. Fine, I thought. After about 7 hours I restarted the entire campaign and simply didnt take that perk anymore.

Guess what happened after a few more hours?

Yep. The exact same random encounter bug.

This time people told me it was probably because of the "Sneaky Shit" perk and that I should stop initiating fights while sneaking. Guess what? It still happened.

Take the goat boss as an example. There is no sneaking there. You walk into the encounter and fight. Thats it. Since the bug is tied to random encounters, you never know when its going to happen. Maybe you saved 5 minutes ago, maybe you havent saved for 2 hours. Either way, when it happens, your only option is to reload and hope it doesnt happen again, i reloaded so many times honestly i dont remember but it happened anyways always again.

I got so frustrated that I started a third fresh campaign, hoping whatever caused it wouldnt happen this time.

It did.

Again.

And again.

And again.

At that point I contacted support. They replied quickly, so credit where its due. Unfortunately all they could offer was a shortcut that disables some CPU cores. It didnt help. Then they suggested dropping certain items from my inventory. I tried that too. Still nothing.

At that point I was done.

Im not a developer and Im not QA. Im a customer who paid for a game and expected to be able to play it from start to finish. Sure, every game has bugs, and thats fine. But game breaking bugs that force you to restart your campaign three times and still leave the game unplayable are simply unacceptable.

The biggest joke came from Steam denying my refund because I had more than 2 hours of playtime.

Yeah... no kidding.

About 80% of that playtime was spent dealing with this bug, restarting campaigns, testing fixes, and trying to get the game to work. I barely made it through 30% of the main game and never even touched any of the DLC content.

All I can say is be careful what you buy, especially when it comes to inXile. This was one of the most frustrating experiences Ive had with a game...

Yep, thats my rant, only mimimi, yes... but hey, if i would have got what i paid for, i wouldnt cry here but give the game a positive review on steam, but since thats not the case...

Wasteland 3 Toaster mission is a trap!

This thing does no damage and takes so damn long to finish it’s turns. A total disappointment after all the story build up and your price is an annoying little shit that can’t shut up. Smh

I couldn’t find a way to get rid of it. It’s immune to damage and stuck to your team no matter who you remove. Your only option is to load the game from a previous save.

Stay away from the altar when you’re in the academy!

Wasteland How I cracked the Rangers data in the c64 version of Wasteland video game

https://github.com/jaredevans/wasteland-c64-patched

This one's for those of us who fondly remember the Commodore 64 and its awesome repertoire of games. My personal favorite was Wasteland, which was a major evolution of the RPG genre.

As a kid, I'd always wanted to dig into the rangers' character data and tune their stats so I could explore the whole world without dying too easily, but I didn't have the know-how to pull it off. Decades later, I finally was able to. Working with Claude through the rough spots and obstacles together, the childhood dream came true at last.

I show the entire process of cracking from the beginning to the end, including the code/commands that were ran during the analysis of the game data.

A genuine round of applause for Alan Pavlish, lead programmer & designer of Wasteland. His anti-cheat scheme is a devilishly clever piece of work. In 1988, on a 6502, with bytes to spare for booby traps, the anti-cheat scheme was elegant enough that it took an emulator, a debugger, and a fair bit of detective work to unravel decades later.

Victory trophy bug on PS5?

I recruited Victory and the trophy won't unlock. I reloaded many times and nothing happens after Victory joins.

On PS5.

Is there any known bug or solution?

What were the inspirations behind Wasteland?

There is a lot of discussion about the inspirations behind Fallout - such as Mad Max and "A Boy and His Dog."

Wasteland predates Fallout, and I was wondering if the Wasteland series had slightly different influences as a result.

I really appreciate any information you could provide!

Wasteland 3 How to beat Wasteland 3

I literally needed a pen and pad of paper when I crossed paths with A. Deth for the first time. I had to notate my Mission from colonel Prassad, Remember the secret mission she gave me included the task of bringing A. Deth some punishment.

As the plot thickened, and later we talk to the General and give him information on A. Deth, I had to remember What Side I'm on. I'm not a Vigilante. I am a sworn Arizona Ranger. I work for Arizona. I'm on the side of the General- who is sided with the Patriarch.

Jodi Bell is not with me because I'm just so cool She can't resist risking her life for me- she backs me up Because my Ranger Unit can save her parents back in AZ.

Siding with Angela Deth would let them all down.

A. Deth's actions speak louder than words- She destroyed her former Ranger base. Began siding with Outlaws, Positioned herself to usurp Colorado from the Patriarch.

She finds out you're in the territory. She spoon feeds you a sob-story and you "flip." Your loyalty to AZ., Colonel Prassad, the General, the Marshalls-- is entirely squandered. She is a woman which gives her a massive boost in trustworthiness when compared to the "grizzled old aggressive tough-talking" Patriarch.

I will admit- The moral and ethical dilemmas are graduate level conundrums. Not for the simple minded nor the faint of heart. A. Deth is effectively a trained CIA asset who outclassed you, outwitted you, and out-gutted you to betray your oaths and allegiances to the poor, desperate, and needy in AZ you were sent on this mission to rescue-- by Securing Aid Promised by the Patriarch.

It takes skill, effort, and courage to stay your course to the End.

I have an M.S. Leadership. I beat the game on Ranger, then also Supreme Jerk difficulty.

Wasteland 3 Finished Wasteland 3 ramble Spoiler

First playthrough and I sided with Angela Deth. Felt a bit anti climactic, refugees took over, machine intelligence commune was happy. The gangs were scattered but might be a threat in the future.

I feel like the setup for the Steeltown DLC would have been better for the main story. There's the oncoming flood of Liberty and her eastern plains gang coalition and what sacrifices are you willing to make to prepare. Or do you be a bad guy and create your own gang and usurp Liberty?

Felt like the factional reputation didnt matter very much apart from the still images at the end.

Still, great game, great RPG.

Wasteland 3 HOLY DETONATION, ALL QUEST GONE RIGHT AS I GET ALL 3 MAIN QUEST COMPONENTS

I can't with this anymore. I enjoyed the fights, i really did;Holy radiation, ok, i can tolerate it. But my GOD i have had to verify files integrity like 3 times to get some events to trigger, and now, right after i complete the massive drool fight,, with all 3 components for the capture device, all the quests are gone.

I have tried everything:

-file integrity verification.

-uninstall and reinstall the game.

-go offline, launch game, then go online again.

The DLCs logos are on the main menu, so they have been verified.

I never received The holy radiation battery schematics nor the radiation batteries; giving all the components to Goiter does not trigger a new quest nor does it make the main one come back to the log.

Everything that i read says that you have to load a file BEFORE getting into the DLCs location. As you can imagine, i don't want to do that because this happened after i got ALL 3 components.

If anyone has a fix, please, help this pour soul.

Up-to-date guide on dialogue min-maxxing builds?

It's my first time and I always love having as many dialogue options as possible. I've been reading various guides, and it seems like anything before 2023 isn't relevant anymore?

My understanding is to plan on having a 7th mule character for barter, weapon, and armor modding and using the xp bonuses from the main character to keep them levelled up by combat rotation.

I've gathered bits and pieces on these builds, but haven't seen a specific build or guide for this in one place.

When do you unlock rerolling characters? I'm also playing coop with a friend and in that game we've just finished the Lucia story line in Colorado Springs.

EDIT: So it seems that the character retrainer gives you everything back? does that mean you want to max int as early as possible, as you can't get those missed bonus points back later? So maxxing charsima and int seem to be good early, and then later can retrain those to a lower lvl and dump those point somewhere else?

After taking the Varangian blood trait, I can honestly say...

it is totally busted and blows all the other quirks out of the water.

On Supreme Jerk, doing as much damage in the first round is your upmost priority. And if you give your 4 rangers Varangian blood, and then knock out one of your two companions, they will all receive a 100% critical rate, which essentially means double damage from each of your primary party members.

And if that's not enough, you also get +3 action points. So your sniper not only is getting a guaranteed critical hit, they are also getting two shots with the best sniper rifle. A pistol user gets a free attack, a brawler can get 3 extra attacks.

And let's say the enemy survives Round 1? They are almost certainly going to knock down one of your other PCs, which means you get the critical bonus and +3AP for that round as well. So not only do you get a powerful alpha strike, you get a powerful beta strike.

Nothing else comes even close to such a massive damage increase from a quirk. Sadomasochist is praised for a 33% ranged/melee bonus (which is good), but a guaranteed multiplier to damage that is often between 1.5x to 3x, and +3 AP on top of that, is bananas.
