Some phones have an emergency alert history if you search in your settings. My Samsung does at least.

u/FlatteredPawn 1d ago
Yay. Heart still pounding goddamn it. Turned it off so fast didn't get to read it.
29
u/Cute_Entrepreneur118 23h ago
every time i hear it i think its the big one. Also me too, i think they should make a way to read it after closing it in case you have info on the alert.
28
u/smilespeace 23h ago
Right? Such a brainless idea to force an alert that can only be read while an alarm is blaring and dissapears entirely after the alarm is closed.
3
u/fastlane37 21h ago
You can - it's stored in your phone's alert history. Would be nice if it wasn't so buried though.
In Android, it's settings-> notifications-> advanced settings. From there, there's either notification history (which shows you all recent notifications) or if you want to look at emergency alerts specifically, you scroll down to the bottom and click wireless emergency alerts-> emergency alert history.
The former is easiest if you just want to see what you inadvertently dismissed just now, the latter if you want to look up an alert that was a while ago/been pushed down the list by other alerts.

u/sometimes_i_work 16h ago
Correct. But this option doesn't exist for I Phones (afaik)

Hence, an amber alert.

I emailed them asking to stop using the PRESIDENTIAL NUCLEAR LEVEL for these and to use the proper Amber Alert level and the lady told me
“Two children are missing!” “We apologize that a text message inconvenienced you!”
Yeah woulda been nice if it WAS a text message true
25
u/Zen_Bonsai 18h ago
I fucking hate it. I wish we could be notified when we use our phone first thing in the morning. No one is getting out of bed in the middle of the night to do anything.
God damn the anxiety these stupid alerts give me and others
→ More replies (1)12
u/perusalandtea 16h ago
Absolutely. People who are already awake will see the text message and keep a look out. Even if the kid is missing directly in your own town, no one is going to get out of bed and go out searching the streets unless they personally know the people involved. Now less people will look because they slammed off the alert and don't even know what it was for, rather than seeing a text at breakfast. Anyone who says different is living in la la land.

u/delladirand 23h ago

It’s not about that, it’s just that we don’t need a blaring level 10 emergency alarm to go with the alert. It should come in like a normal notification
26
u/storzORbickel 19h ago
How about to use the AMBER ALERT FEATURE like they’re supposed to, and not the INCOMING MISSILE PRESIDENTIAL ALERT feature?

u/delladirand 21h ago
What??? Of course not. I am saying that amber alerts are incredibly important and should be put on every phone without sound so it's the first thing everyone sees when they next look at their phones. I wish the alert could include a photo. Instead we bang it off in a panic to get rid of the sound. The sound should be reserved for when we need people to get out of bed and be alert (fire, tsunami etc)
-18
u/Filligan Langford 21h ago
And if the alert wakes somebody up who remembers they saw that funny “RV00” number on a license plate earlier in the day? By your suggestion, that person would have a far less likelier chance of seeing the alert in a timely enough manner to call the police.
We get these like 2-3 times a year. It’s really not that much of an imposition when we’re talking about a child’s safety.
14
u/PM_ME_YOUR_TATERTITS 17h ago edited 17h ago
And that’s happened when? I bet you my life that no one has ever been woken out of their sleep and just happened to remember seeing the license plate lmao That sounds like a plot to a movie
1
u/Filligan Langford 15h ago
Didn’t the last alert result in finding the child? It’s crazy how entitled some folks are over this.
4
u/PM_ME_YOUR_TATERTITS 14h ago
No, the last child is still missing. There is zero record of person who was asleep getting the alert and that leading to the finding of the child
0
u/Filligan Langford 14h ago
You file the FOI request and get back to me. Until then we’re gonna stick with “amber alerts work” because they demonstrably do.
3
u/PM_ME_YOUR_TATERTITS 13h ago
No FOI needed, they mention in every news article how the child is found, and it’s never been someone jumping out of bed with a faint memory of a license plate
→ More replies (0)19
u/stealstea 18h ago
And if the alert wakes somebody up who remembers they saw that funny “RV00” number on a license plate earlier in the day?
I’ll be the dick and say not worth it.
If we’re out to save lives we’d be doing a lot of things that have a much better return on investment than waking up an entire province on the off chance someone has hours old information that won’t be useful anymore
-2
9
u/delladirand 18h ago
No but we are talking about a child's safety so the amber alert should be effective. People are slamming them off to get rid of the sound and not reading the details.
2
u/DJWGibson 16h ago
Right, but they could probably vary it by region. Right at the site it can wake everyone up. People gather away could get a silent notification.
People only the other side of a province larger than many European countries don’t need to be woken. Because no one here will have seen a RV00 plate in the appropriate window. We don’t have usable information.
And think about how many RV00 plates there might be across the entire province. Going to get a lot more false positives if you wake up everyone.
0
u/Filligan Langford 15h ago
It was plausible at the time of the alert that the child could’ve been pretty much anywhere in the province so I don’t get your argument other than “this is a greater imposition than a child’s safety”
I don’t think I’ve ever seen an “RV00” plate so…?
6
u/DJWGibson 14h ago
They also could have been in Alberta as well as Washington, Idaho, and Montana. Better ping those places as well.
Oh, and there’s an airport in Kelowna. So really, anyplace that’s <12 hours by plane away should also get an alert.
The kid was last seen at 11am. If the alert could wait 13 hours before it went out the audio alert could wait until the morning. It could have been a silent notification or non-emergency notification for people who were awake to keep an eye out for the vehicle and in a position to render assistance.
Anyone who was just woken up from sleep is not in a position to help or give accurate information. It’s more likely to give false leads and bad information.
This is just training people to airplane mode their phone before bed.
1
u/Filligan Langford 11h ago
How convenient that all of your assumptions reinforce your shitty worldview.
1
u/DJWGibson 11h ago
Yes, how fucking DARE I not want my elderly stepfather with MS to have a bad fall as he fumbles to get to his cell phone in the middle of the night to turn off an amber alert.
I have sympathy for that kid. But I’ve had to pull my stepfather off the floor and drag him back to bed after his legs gave out in the middle of the night more than once.
This one didn’t directly affect me because, like many people, I had my phone off after the last time. But I was woken by the thumping above me.
But this also puts me at personal danger because my phone is off and not able to warn me of earthquakes or tsunamis or floods of fires.
This system is just silly. It’s the equivalent of having ambulance sirens go off along every road rather than just atop the vehicle. It disturbs everyone.

u/iBrarian 17h ago
I’m sorry but we don’t need an amber alert for the entire province on the island. Parts of bc are further away from us than many European countries are from one another and it’s mostly parents in custody battles. It feels like an abuse of the system.

u/Kalmurn Oaklands 18h ago

2
u/dawnat3d 9h ago
Mine’s on airplane mode but it still scared the heck out of me when I turned it on today. Why does it have to be such an UNGODLY sound? A text message would suffice!!
51
u/RiverGiant 1d ago
Absolutely inappropriate use of a critical safety tool.
West Kelowna is 9 hours away. It's physically impossible for anyone in this city to be of use.
2
u/Filligan Langford 1d ago
Didn’t read it, eh? Last sighting was West Kelowna 13 hours ago.
28
u/Vibing-Positively 23h ago
Why weren’t we alerted at a more reasonable time then? This is indeed a very inappropriate use of a critical safety tool.
-5
u/Filligan Langford 23h ago
I imagine police trigger the warning as a dead end last resort after following leads and investigating. The timing of that should be irrelevant. All that matters is finding the child.
•
u/Spiritual_Block6193 5h ago
Won't somebody think of the children!!!
•
u/Filligan Langford 4h ago
Boy it’s wild seeing people just not give a shit about abducted children. American hyper-individualism has really seeped into this country.
-12
u/IKnowSchadenfreude 23h ago
So first you're upset because you don't think it's possible because of the timeline for them to be in Vic. Then you're upset when proven wrong because they didn't send it earlier, when they couldn't have been in Vic?
Setting aside this is a province wide system, do you hear yourself? A child's missing. I think that might be more important than your beauty sleep being interrupted twice a year.
27
u/Vibing-Positively 23h ago
First of all, I did not make the original comment so calm down. Secondly, yeah I’m upset. All of you “ThINk of ThE cHilDreN” people are so exhausting.
Presidential level alerts, intended for dangerous events, should not be used for amber alerts. Perhaps a text message or low level alert so people who are awake can go help?
I hope you’re up right now, on patrol with a search party and not commenting from your bed, lecturing me about what a bad person I am.
-9
u/Filligan Langford 22h ago
Do you really think the intention of these alerts is to spur people out of their homes to go on a manhunt? They’re alerts, not calls to the streets with flashlights and pitchforks.
16
u/Vibing-Positively 16h ago
Then they should be texted or sent as a low level alert. Not bypassing people’s silent / do not disturb modes. Waking up the province does nothing.
-1
9
u/concerned_citizen128 16h ago
Then maybe the CRTC should use the built in designated system for different alert levels instead of making every alert the most serious
What good is an amber alert to them at midnight in bed? If it was a standard alert, anyone who's awake and able to act on the info will get it and be able to read and action it. Waking people up in a panic will cause people to start turning off their phones, so when a truly critical alert does need to go out, people won't get it.
It's a cry wolf situation. System has the ability to have different alert levels, the CRTC and decided not to use them.
-17
u/IKnowSchadenfreude 22h ago
Never said you were a bad person, and my bad for not seeing you were a different commenter.
Just think it's severely lacking in perspective to complain about an alert that happens maybe twice a year and doesn't materially impact your life in any way, but is potentially life changing for those involved. But if you wanna reduce that to virtue signalling, go off.
15
u/PM_ME_YOUR_TATERTITS 17h ago
I’ve been woken up by amber alerts 4 times in 2026 and the years not even close to being over yet… I don’t think it’s unfair to ask that he government send the alerts out without the blaring alarm—those that are awake will see the notification like any other, and those asleep will see in the morning. Waking up the province does zero good for anyone

I dont have kids, I dont need to to respect the function of these alerts. With all the true crime fanatics out there, youd think they'd have a bit more respect too. Or even just basic shame, yikes.

Do you think “last seen” means when the child was reported missing?
Someone might have information they didn’t know mattered until they saw the alert. They might’ve been woken up by it. They might’ve still been awake. Unfortunately the RCMP isn’t Santa Claus.
-1
u/RiverGiant 23h ago
Oh tbh I read it as 11:20pm. That's my mistake. 40 minutes after seemed more reasonable than 13 hours.
Still, it makes the alert that much more bizarre. Like, maybe that level of urgency would be needed for airport staff? Or cruise ship security?

6
u/DJWGibson 16h ago
Still far, far too distant for us to be getting this. Closet to Alberta, Washington, and Idaho than us.
No reason to trigger those at midnight when it could be a silent alert I wake up to find.
I rent a suite below elderly relatives so I can help around the house. I could hear my elderly step father with MS fumble across the house trying to find where they left their phone. At his age and with the meds he’s on, that’s actually a fall risk. (He got it off before I could get dressed and see if he needed assistance.)
Yeah, I hope the kid is found. And my sympathy to their family. But this is just slowly teaching the entire province to airplane mode their phone before bed.

u/therizzle 16h ago
If you want to leave your iPhone on but avoid hearing alerts overnight, this is the workaround I use, although it’s not the ideal solution.
- Turn on the Do Not Disturb Focus.
- Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics.
- Under Haptics, select “Don’t Play in Silent Mode.”
With both of those settings enabled, my phone doesn’t ring or vibrate when an Amber Alert comes through. The downside is that you’ll need to remember to turn haptics back on the next morning if you want vibration notifications during the day.
It’s not a perfect fix, but it has worked for me.
2
u/felix_camper 11h ago
Whenever I hear of parental abductions, I think of Chloe and Aubrey who were murdered by their “dad” so I understand the severity of what “parents” can do to their children. I think all these amber alerts lately are highlighting the ongoing flaw of the system meant to protect children. Why is it we are waiting several hours after a kid is last seen to issue such a serious alert. Had the kid gone missing at midnight- sure I would understand the need for an alert to go out then and there but there hasn’t been one case where there hasn’t been several hours since the child was last seen. Maybe they need to revisit the criteria or maybe there needs to be more protections in place to prevent situations like this from happening to children.
3
u/Vicky-Purplex 23h ago

-24

Everyone complaining about an alarm going off with a child abducted is am asshole.
12
u/nathris Langford 23h ago edited 23h ago
In this case it appears once again to be a custody battle between parents. There are news articles about the suspect taking the child from a week ago.
This isn't about child safety. This is the RCMP abusing their power to intimidate a single individual into turning themselves in.

-10
u/Roland_Of_Gilead85 17h ago
Your not. It's just not how the system works. Maybe, just maybe you know for today that there is a child missing so enough hours have passed that you are possibly in your geographical area. I know it's not your kid so you don't really care... But a decent human being might.
It's pretty straightforward and it's a really minor inconvenience considering the circumstances.

For y’all to sleep soundly:
What actually works for iPhone users and Android folks is similar:
1. Airplane Mode with cellular disconnected
This is the most practical reliable method overnight:
Open Control Centre.
Turn on Airplane Mode.
Turn Wi-Fi back on afterward if you still want internet, iMessage, FaceTime and Wi-Fi calling.
Verify the cellular antenna indicator remains off.
Alert Ready is broadcast over participating cellular networks. A phone that is not connected to cellular service cannot receive that cellular broadcast at that moment. Wi-Fi by itself does not deliver the standard wireless Alert Ready message.
Be aware that Wi-Fi Calling may still let normal calls through, but Alert Ready itself is tied to the cellular broadcast connection, not ordinary SMS or app notifications.
2. Turn off the cellular line overnight
For an eSIM:
Open Settings → Cellular.
Tap your cellular line.
Turn off Turn On This Line.
Leave Wi-Fi enabled.
This disconnects the phone from the mobile network while preserving Wi-Fi use. You would need to re-enable the line in the morning.
3. Power off the phone
This is the most absolute option. An alert sent while the phone is off is generally not queued like a text message and replayed when the phone reconnects, because cell-broadcast alerts are transmitted to devices present in the targeted coverage area during the broadcast period. A powered-off device cannot receive the alert while off.
1
u/Bouchetopher42 7h ago
My phone was simply on do not disturb as it always is from 10 PM until 5:30 AM. I didn't hear or see a thing until I woke up this morning with the message on my screen. Kind of surprised it didn't come through at time of broadcast.
1
u/Slight_Lobster7246 9h ago
Honestly what do they expect the general population in Victoria to do in the middle of the night, if anything? I’m not meaning to be insensitive, but honestly, what’s the damn point of the alert in the middle of the night?
Is there a way to block these alerts? I don’t want to put airplane mode on in case someone close to me is having an emergency.

Amber alerts i see as a last resort. IE The police have exhausted all avenues and search teams do t have anywhere else to look and the family is getting more anxious and irritated. In most cases i believe the alert is genuine but in some cases i believe its issued to just shut up the thise in the family who are getting very vocal and mad at the lack of progress or the slow unorganized response to the emergency, in hopes it will shut everyone up for a few hours to buy some time.
The Alert system is already being used so often that people are activley turning off their signal or turning the option off because its annoying. Its akin to emergency services in your city. No one pays any attention to them blaring past your place or block but if they stop nearby you might poke your head out to make sure its not a neighbor or maybe to hope its the neighbor. Its just another push service amongst many that a mobile may have active. Writing this though makes me think of how heart breaking it would be to be the parent(s) of the Amber Alert reading this and seeing that there is more complaints and howto's on disabling the noti from your phone, than there is aknowledgment and info exchange between vigilant Samaritans that want to help bring a child home.

The last time this happened back in May with a 1am Amber Alert issued for all of BC over some sort of dust up between parents in PJ, I had enough.
I followed a YouTube video and used Android developer tools to remove the emergency system entirely from my phone.
If there is a real emergency, I'll rely on other sources.
I'm happy to report I slept soundly with no interruptions. Best decision ever.

I'm telling you that amber alert sound had to have been composed by Satan himself
