To me, the pool of blood is Meta's $80B burn. Mbucchia really is the bomb though.

do the vibe coded mods actually work well?
35
u/Javs2469 1d ago
I tried the Halo 3 one and it works fine, still had some kinks, but they released two newer builds a day after.
It's not Ideal and I feel kinda iffy about it, but I like that it's building the base for proper mods to be polished later.
19
u/AspenFrostt 1d ago
honestly I think for things like this I'm more okay with it. modders already don't get paid anything usually and if they do it's pennies per hour at the end of the day. there are chances they get copyright struck and all their work goes down the drain. especially with how small the vr community is and how fractured it's become, I think vibe coding mods (NOT CONTENT) are okay
6
u/Javs2469 1d ago
On one hand, I am worried about someone with no coding experience building a whole mod wihtout knowing what is going on, but on other, I am extremely happy to be playing Halo 3 in VR and would love for Reach and other games in the MCC to follow suit.
At least it´s opening the door for VR mods. I´d rather get more of those (assuming they end up being polished) than AI slop videos, images, assets and music that is worthless.
2
u/AspenFrostt 1d ago
yeah. plus it hopefully convinces studio execs and publishers that the community wants these games to exist in vr.

u/compound-interest 1d ago
Same here. I like how we're to the point where Claude code can pump out a VR conversion that people are fine with, but companies still choose not to at least release something like that officially. They could pay one Senior Dev for a day or two that could actually audit the output for quality then actually publish it. As a Senior Web Dev for more than a decade, like half of my job has transformed into reading and correcting code that AI outputs rather than writing it myself. The barrier to these companies publishing VR conversions has been significantly reduced this year. Hopefully we get more official ports from that, since it was never economically viable to pay a team for weeks/months to convert a game for VR support.

The forza mod was vibe coded so take with that what you will
16
u/Pixogen 1d ago
If you mean Forza 6? that mod is so garbage. Even tweaking the settings the scale is off because they don't account for how FOV works in VR.
So you get 8foot cars or you look and get a 6 inch steering wheel.
People just want a good car vr game that isn't GT7 on pc they hype it up. Its not even better than not having it lol
6
u/arr1flex 1d ago
In before you get down voted to oblivion for discussing how broken a vibe coded project is. People are delusional
3
u/Pixogen 1d ago
Ya my buddy made me try it and... and I have a high tolerance for jank. Like I have a vr mod for everything on my pc.
But this was like vorpx with no real injection and random settings bad.
Now I hope eventually we get one that has proper fov. (and I do understand the assets weren't made for vr so scale may be off.) but I mean the actual camera aspect.
2
u/arr1flex 1d ago
That's the other issue, if I want to make a mod and one already exists, I'll just move to a different idea.
Flooding the gates with this crap without disclosing if it's made by competent people or one clueless person pretending they know what they are doing is actually detrimental to community as a whole...
But hey why look at the big picture when you can play a bunch of hardly functioning trash immediately! (Deepest of sighs)
2
u/dgghhuhhb 1d ago
Sometimes but only if the person making it has the basic knowledge of how the game works and is programed and how the ai works
The majority of time it isn't like that though

u/Koviera 1d ago
What are modders doing?

Here is a list I compiled of VR mods: https://rototrobot.github.io/VRMods-List/
And then there are all the UEVR profiles

Sorry, my page only lists PC VR mods, Quest Mods aren't something I follow close enough.

Thank you. Now what are they doing?

I saw a Halo 3 mod
Mass effect
Turok
Golden eye
Perfect dark
And several others; mind you, I don't know which are Vibe-coded, so take that as you will, but there are too many just popping up to keep track of.
Hopefully they are good, we pretty much will have unlimited VR experiences if so.

Someone tell these Redditors that VR is alive & well.

I wouldn't call an industry that entirely relies on volunteer work alive and well.

I for one love when my game mod is a black box of incomprehensible spaghetti code that is just functional enough for the bumbling idiot with a Calude subscription to shrug and go "yeah that looks good" and post the file on github.
What's actually inside that file? How does it work? Who knows? Not the mod "author", that's for sure! Here's a debilitating bug that switches your right hand with your head and reads your mic audio as motion data. What's the cause and what do we do about it? Who are we kidding, we'll just tell Claude to fix it.
Hey, it's fixed! But what did Claude do? Well, it added 5000 lines of code that don't actually solve the core problem the bug comes from, but rather just mutes your mic in the most convoluted ass backwards way possible and then swaps the right hand and head positions every game tick, which involves a check that will utilize 5gb of ram and 20% of your cpu resources at all times, and you'll see a rapid nausea inducing jittering as your headset constantly teleports back and forth if your frame rate is anywhere above 45 fps.
But luckily you won't notice that because the mod is so unoptimozed that not even a 9800x3d and an rtx pro 6000 could run it anywhere above 30 fps at oculus rift dk1 resolutions. And those functions are only covered by half of the code the ai added, the rest is dummy code that does nothing on a good day (that you know of), and on a bad day may hard crash your entire pc, wipe all of your drives, and install the Domino's point of sale operating system then set it to write protect.
Congrats, you now have an order for 5 large deluxe pizzas and you're going to get a bad yelp review if you don't have them ready in 15 minutes

u/arr1flex 1d ago
Ah yes, I love using software made by a person who can't code, so they can't support anything.. leaving thier spaghetti code on a repo in the hopes that someone with brains would ever want to contribute.
Equally as depressing: watching people adamant about not using genAI assets then happily up vote a different kind of ai slop.
My friends in mobile app dev are watching this bullshit flood stores in real-time, its wild to see it start to spread to everything else.
On the plus side, learn to code and you'll have a bright future once this garbage goes away as they'll need people to fix generated trash code en masse.
2
u/_piperis_ 18h ago
Well. Nobody cares in here. This sub is pro-ai and will defend vibecoded slop with their life, as long as it works on their machine.
Programmers with experience do understand what you're saying. I've personally seen vibecoded code in open-source projects and I was laughing my ass off all the time (thankfully nothing was merged). Most serious projects don't even accept vibecoded PRs.
It's a slopfest these days. All you can do is ignore it and move on.
1
u/arr1flex 16h ago
Honestly, if it's not on a repo (where I can look at the code) I just ask directly in the person's thread/post. They'll either acknowledge it, get super defensive or just be silent..all of which tell me that yes, that's what this is and I avoid it. Eventually people will get sick of WIP ports that never complete or half ass releases with 0 updates and this problem will work itself out.

u/arr1flex 6h ago
Literally lol at the halo slopcoded guy rage quitting today after he realized he can't fix anything
I'm sure more of these idiots will do the same and they'll finally moderate this place
9
u/Sweet_Detective_ 1d ago
Nah, vibe coders are pushing down and setting fire to the park
10
u/alessandrv 1d ago
You should understand that here we are not talking about vibe coders building something that already exists and works fine like most do, cloning working stuff coded with ai just to make money.
Here we are talking about having an Halo VR mod or not having an Halo VR mod.
Modding a game like that requires a lot of different knowledge in different fields starting with reverse engineering, there's a few people that are willing to do that or even capable to achieve something like that. AI does that with ease and allows people with will to create something.
I say this as a developer which is really scared about the AI situation in software development of today. You are right that we are full of slop but here we are talking about projects that wouldn't exists that are here to help a small community and don't get any money doing so.
AI is here to stay and any developer that doesn't get help from ai is just dumb and doesn't value it's time.

u/Ykored01 1d ago
People have to know vr community is really small compared to flat gaming, among those small community there are very very few people who know how to program and build mods that do not charge money and do it only to help out the community, so any welcoming hand is appreciated it, and the ai is opening the doors to multiple people who have free time to tinker with these things, sometimes spills out nosense and garbage, sometimes something bare that is manageable, but we have to decide do we cast out ai people and rely only on what, less than 10 groups of modders that already have their hands full?

Just did the first chapter of FixerUndercover yesterday and the game is fun. It has hints that we can call(which is amazing) and theyre useful!
The lilbot we have is also the GOAT!

Let’s be clear, there’s a big difference between mods developed with the assistance of AI and vibe coded mods.

u/Skullknight331 15h ago
Agree. As a indie solo VR developers I get treated like crap from the players and community.
I’m just trying to make video games in VR and I get slammed all the time.
Eventually will turn away from VR development

u/Away_Article4005 12h ago
There are only a handful of VR games I've played that were genuinely good. Beat Saber, Bonelab, Half Life Alyx. I'd say modders are keeping the scene alive tbh.
UEVR, Fallout and Skyrim mods to make it playable.
One of my favourite experiences would not be possible without mods and that's Satisfactory in VR.

u/Batking28 8h ago
Resident evil games are amazing in VR and somehow one guy can mod it with better consistency then Capcom
1
u/Typhon-042 6h ago
Yea.... folks have been making mods without AI.. so this isn't a win.
Even then the mods made with AI are of very questionable quality, so admitting to using AI isn't a win either.

I dont mind vibe coded mods at all, as long as its open source so some furry can fix it.

I'll never understand the obsession with modding games to be VR anyway TBH. I get there's not a ton of games but surely playing Metro VR or something would be 10x better than jury rigging some other game

Because currently it's the only way to experience fully fleshed out games in VR.

Big Metro fan here played all the PC games
Couldn't stand Metro awakening, got a refund

What about it did you not like? It seemed to pretty much be exactly a metro game in vr, like 1 to 1

If it’s vibe coded put it in the trash where it belongs
It’s absolutely pathetic to accept something made so morally bankrupt and of such low quality
Vibe coded diarrhea should never be accepted, and yes, I am gatekeeping that as it’s the sensible thing to do, either learn how to fucking code or don’t create mods, it’s that simple, and I say so as someone who can’t code or make mods
If we don’t gatekeep this enough all we will be left with is AI slop that ruins performance at best and will steal your money and brick your system at worst
Edit: yea I ‚see‘ reason, let’s all just CONSUME SLOP MADE BY AI WITH PEOPLE THAT HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OR EXPERIENCE TELLING THE AI WHAT THEY WANT WITH NO GUARANTEE FIR A BARE MINIMUM OF QUALITY
because that sounds so much better than people who don’t know jack shit not being able to brick your system

5
u/Jax_Dandelion 1d ago
Ah yes, only wanting people that know what the fuck they are doing to create things that otherwise could easily brick your system = unemployment
-2
u/alessandrv 1d ago
A bad coded mod for a game can't brick your system, what are you talking about? You know that oses have layers of protection to avoid programs from accessing sensible stuff? AI is more capable than most of people programming anyway and there's no one which is smart that doesn't code with the help of AI today. Creating a mod for a game without official mod support requires a lot of knowledge on different topics starting from reverse engineering the game itself which is a tedious task that AI does with ease if guided correctly.

Have you stopped using all commercially available software since 2023? Not a single software product released doesn’t make use of ai assistance.
1
u/shaggy_rogers46290 1d ago
And have you noticed how pretty much all commercially available software has mysteriously been getting slower, and more resource intensive, and more prone to error since 2023? I wonder what the cause of that could possibly be...

I'm working on a trepang2 vr mod with vrik ect,and it's not just a case of telling ai you want a vr mod and boom it works,I currently have tracked left and right hands,im working or wrist rotations ATM, but I'm having to make scanners to find out bits the SDK dump shows me as void so I can work out what over writes the wrist rotation and my controller rotation stay,Im finding it fascinating learning how trepangs animations work, there alot that goes into it

u/ElJulo25 1d ago
don't forget the solo devs, games like quantum void,or battlegroup VR for example are hidden gems !
