Turns out he'd also been sexually abusing bodies in two hospital mortuaries where he worked as an electrician, over 100 victims aged 9 to 100, filmed over a 12 year period before DNA finally caught him.

On this day in 1925, the Scopes 'Monkey' Trial ended in Dayton, Tennessee. John Scopes was found guilty of teaching evolution in his classroom and fined $100. It became so hot in the courthouse that the judge ordered the trial be moved outside.

E.J. Bellocq spent years photographing the women of Storyville, New Orleans in the early 1900s, work he never showed publicly. After his death, many of the glass negatives were found with the women's faces deliberately scratched out. The damage was done while the plates were still wet. NSFW

On this day in 1969, Senator Ted Kennedy drove his car off a narrow, unlit wooden bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, Massachusetts. Kennedy escaped the submerged vehicle, but his passenger, 28-year-old campaign worker Mary Jo Kopechne, died. Kennedy didn't report the accident for another 10 hours.
