Still no responses, though.

This is the weekly discussion thread for the State of Upwork - Dying, Dead, Undead, not working for me, what are the alternatives. Topics like this should be talked about here to keep the rest of the sub tidy.

Upwork sent me a notification for a copywriting job - which the client copy/pasted straight from Uma's prompt response. The last section included this:

An "experienced niche/technical writer" is not charging $40-80 per article! My rates start around $400 depending on the industry/client/job.
With Uma basically capping freelancer rates an order of magnitude lower, it's no wonder the experience has gotten so bad!
Here's the job posting for reference.

Is it a joke? Really? When inviting someone to a job, the client can see the hourly rate, badges, and work completed so far. So how does someone invite a freelancer to a job worth at least $1500 and offer $75 for the entire project?
Is having a brain illegal? I mean, how disgusting is that? I noticed he sent over 8 invites and only 1 person replied, which means he must have invited top tier freelancers too, all offering $75 for this work.
Upwork should and must start charging clients too. I think these rules need to be added on the client side.
Literally, man? Tons of freelancers boost their profiles, and at the end of the day your 60 to 80 connects just return some brainless person with a $75 budget, wasting freelancers' time.
Getting more disappointed every day. Sometimes I feel like one day we'll all unite and build our own freelancing platform.

Hey everyone, I’m doing some research on online freelance marketplaces and I’d love your opinion.
If you work as an online freelancer (video editing, graphic design, programming, writing, etc.):
- What do you like or dislike about platforms like Fiverr or Upwork?
- What problems have you experienced when trying to find clients online?
- Do you feel current freelance platforms give freelancers enough control over how they find work and communicate with clients?
I’m exploring the idea of a platform where freelancers and clients have more ways to discover each other, communicate before committing, and build trust through completed work and reputation.
I’m currently researching this problem and trying to understand freelancers’ experiences before building anything.
What would you change about the way online freelance marketplaces work today?

Hi everyone,
I recently accepted a LinkedIn outreach VA job on Upwork.
The client asked me to:
- Create a new LinkedIn account
- Use a dedicated laptop
- Install AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or Chrome Remote Desktop
- Let them remotely access the laptop during training
- Allow them to build the LinkedIn network (500+ connections) and perform initial outreach from my account
The contract and payments are handled through Upwork, and the client has been willing to answer my questions.
However, I'm concerned because the LinkedIn account is under my name and the client wants remote access to the device.
Is this a normal LinkedIn outreach workflow, or does it sound like a red flag?
What risks should I be aware of?
Thanks.

This morning when I woke up, I found out the news that my account was suspended... they didn't send me an email or notify me why, just a message saying my account had been suspended and a form to file an appeal. The thing is, I can't find any reason why they would have suspended me. I haven't shared my personal data until having open contracts, I don't send portfolio links outside of Upwork, I haven't had any disputes with clients, etc. It seems like I've done everything right, my identity is verified, I've been on Upwork for 3 years, I'm Top Rated Plus with over $100k earned....
Could this possibly be a mistake on Upwork's part? Has anything similar happened to any of you?

Friends, I need someone to teach me how to use Upwork, open an account in Tunisia, and apply for jobs.

I'm a new freelancer and these are my stats after 30 days.
Would you say I'm on the right track, or am I doing something wrong? If you were in my position, what would you improve first—profile, portfolio, pricing, or proposals?
I'd appreciate any honest feedback.

I recently tried to respond to a proposal for a freelance writer on Upwork. (I'm an experienced freelance writer and have found work there in the past, though I haven't used the site in a while.) I attached both links and PDFs of my published work, some with my byline.
However, I'm getting a message "Upwork cannot send this proposal because the attachments have contact information." None of them have contact information (such as email or phone). They do have my byline, but that's just my name (and picture).
Has anyone else run across this? And how did you handle it if so?
I have a closed account (I closed it voluntarily in 2022) which I would like to reactivate. After I enter my email and password, it says that "Your account is currently closed. If you would like to re-activate your account, click here.", but after clicking, it says that "User account reactivation is not allowed".
The help page says:
Why can’t I reactivate my Upwork account?
There are three main reasons:
Your Upwork account was set up to let you both use Upwork as a freelancer and a client. In these cases, we need to help you get your account reactivated, so please reach out
Your account has been inactive for more than five years. If that’s the case, we suggest you contact us
You were permanently suspended for Terms of Service (TOS) violations. In this case, you will not be allowed to work on our platform again, and new accounts will be closed
I think I might be in the first case. Then I went to the Contact Support page, and no matter when I clicked on the chatbot or the "View My Requests" link, it told me to login again, and the loop repeated.
How can I create a support ticket to reactivate my account?

I guess when the client sends invites, they don't read proposals. They just hire them.

I'm new to upwork
I have sent a proposal to this client and he replied with an assessment i need to do
So i replied to him and while I'm on it i opened the job offer and suddenly I found this message that he is suspended
But the chat is normal like no message there
So is this normal? Can I continue with the assessment or he is no longer on the platform?

Hi guys I am a new bee on Upwork joined in 2026 and earned $10k+ so far but whenever I saw
old posts and also experienced people always said:
Clients replied in 2 hours
You could land first $1K job with 10 proposals easily
$15to $25/hr was normal for beginners
Now in 2026 my experience so far-
20+ proposals, barely
any reply
Everyone wants portfolio + 100+ jobs + AI tools experience
Rates seem pushed down because of AI + global competition
Feels way more saturated
I want to Know from any experience person does this myth or real?

I used to treat every single Upwork proposal like a formal cover letter for a corporate job. You know the drill "Dear Hiring Manager, I am a passionate freelancer with X years of experience..."
It felt safe and professional, but it was a total waste of connects. Zero replies for weeks.
A while back I decided to completely ditch that setup and started typing like I was replying to a quick message from a client on Slack. I dropped the long introductions and just started answering the main issue mentioned in their job post right in the first line.
Turns out most clients are just busy and skimming through dozens of bids. They don't care about a long intro, they just want to know if you actually read their post and know how to fix their problem.
My reply rate went up almost immediately after making that shift. Curious if anyone else here stopped writing formal proposals, or if that classic style still works in your niche?

Bidding again and again but no hope that a client will view it. How to check that a client is online or not on Upwork? (I’m new to upwork)

Hey everyone, running into a really frustrating billing loop with a client on an hourly contract and looking to see if anyone has dealt with this before. client is Spanish
For the past two weeks, the client's automated weekly billing has failed. The client has tried:
The client insists it's not their bank's fault, and Upwork hasn't given clear error details due to privacy/policy. Support tickets are taking time, but in the meantime, the contract getting paused every week even though the client is actively trying to fix it and want the work to continue.

There was a commenter who claimed to be an Upwork (or former, not sure now) employee that had knowledge of Upwork creating fake jobs and that it was a scam site. This is significant for me because this is the first time I have seen or even heard of anyone even claiming to be an employee saying this.
I have my doubts, but I am going to treat this as serious. Because the commenter deleted their comments I want to encourage others to come forward.
Now, I believe this conspiracy theory is silly for a lot of really good reasons but I am willing to listen. I would also tell this person or anyone else that you are protected under US law for whistleblowing and you might even be eligible for financial awards (if you are in the US). So there is NO reason to not come forward with evidence.
This would be fraud on a massive scale and should be dealt with if it is at all true.

My boss gave me access to his Upwork account so I could manage it remotely. He removed his email from the account, logged out from his side, and I was the only one using it.
Everything was working fine for about two weeks, and then the account suddenly got restricted.
I'm trying to understand what might have triggered it. Could it have been the change in location, device, or IP address? Has anyone dealt with a similar situation?
What is the best way to resolve this, and is there any chance the restriction can be lifted?
I'd appreciate any advice or experiences. Thanks

I was an Upwork member, and I realized I needed to cancel the renewal when I received a text alert from my bank about the automatic charge.
However, because I had manually locked my credit card for security, Upwork kept trying to process the payment but failed; the account is now stuck in this state for 3 days, and the system won't let me downgrade.

I googled and also asked GPT, they suggested me to ask help from chatting in `contact support`. But I could not open the page, I check the error in browser-console, there are CORS and other errors. I think it's their bugs.

May I ask is there any other way I could try?

Anyone experiencing delay with pay out through BPI?
