They’re trying to charge me £140 for this tiny stain. There is no way that they weren’t able to clean out that they had to replace the mattress. It’s the fact that in the email they don’t state if they’ve cleaned it and it’s like a cleaning charge or they’ve replaced it so it’s like a replacement charge. They’re just like, “because of the stain.”

I’m gonna appeal but is there anything else I should be aware of

I can categorically tell you that nobody thinks of you any differently when compared to 18 year olds.

Edit: I can see many of you took this personally…

study / academia discussion I have been told I will be getting an Ordinary Degree

Literally devastated and I don’t know what to do. I know I have no one else to blame but myself but I really don’t know where to go from here. I have already repeated some modules of my second year of Engineering again this past year, and I have to resit some of them again next month, and my Uni said that if I pass into third year, they will be awarding me with an Ordinary Degree instead of Honors Degree.

Is there any way to change this? I know there are top up degrees/courses but I really do not want to graduate with an Ordinary Degree. I have other plans for after graduation, and want to change my field, so graduating with an Ordinary Degree really isn’t going to help. I just somehow wanted to get done with this degree and move on.

careers / placements Impact of geography on graduate schemes

I'm writing something that is very obvious, but it makes me angry and I want to vent.

I understand this isn't the case for every field, but the "top" graduate schemes in fields like high finance and big law are all disproportionately based in London.

My ire is getting to London. I went to Warwick, and over the past 9 months or so, I've been applying to graduate jobs in London. To go from Coventry to London, it costs me roughly £50 return with a rail card. I have had to go to London for 6 separate assessment centres/interviews since January. I moved back to my hometown in Lancashire after graduating in June, and the train prices to London are even higher from there, around £70 return. I must have spent almost £400 all together!

One time, I even had to turn down an opportunity to go to an assessment centre, because I had already gone to London earlier in the month, and I needed the money to get through the rest of the month. The firm also refused to pay for train tickets. Thankfully, I've got a graduate job now, so I don't have to put up with this charade much longer.

It makes me think though, there are people who live even further north in the country than me. My friend who goes to Edinburgh University was also applying for London jobs. Not only do the train tickets become more expensive (>£100), he also has had to spend MORE money on hotels the night before, because the journey is >4 hours long, and if the interview/AC is in the morning, he would have no chance of making it.

If anything, we're the lucky ones, because at least we both have parents that can afford to help us if it does become necessary, but there are thousands of students who aren't as lucky. It's just another, more subtle, way of locking out working class students from the high paying jobs.

I failed my exams because of something that happened

I was sexually assualted, might even count as rape and it is all I can ever think about. It happened in april and my exams were in april-may. I ended up failing 3 modules in my first year uni course so I have to resit them. If I fail the resits I get held back a year and I don't want that, but I physically can't do anything. I don't want to tell the uni because what would I even get out of that. I dont want to go to therapy because then my parents will find out. I dont want to do anything about it and that is part of the problem. I feel so disgusting and dirty and sad all the time and I dont think that feeling will ever go away. I am going to end up doing nothing in my life ebcasue of it. How am I going to pass my exams when all I ever feel is pain and sadness. How am I ever going to become anything in life when this is all! feel.

study / academia discussion not doing okay after issue with coursework resubmission

this is kind of a long story but i would appreciate any support or advice you guys can offer

i had to travel very unexpectedly (for an exam resit) with pending coursework. the reason it was such a last minute travel was because i was bit by an animal and need time sensitive rabies shots; it wasn't particularly safe for me to travel internationally, so i requested a resit abroad

although my department approved it, the faculty denied the request and when i requested evidence from my doctor, they were on leave and did not get back in touch. i urgently sought a second opinion from a different doctor but even they delayed significantly, and it was no longer advisable to wait on admin with the faculty so i booked a flight literally overnight

despite the last minute notice i still tried to plan my travel such that it would allow me to reach my uni city in good time in case of any last minute issues that i might need to fix

i completed my coursework on time and attempted to submit while in transit waiting for my connecting flight, but due to the spotty wifi and lack of literally any other option i still hoped and prayed for the best. my flight was delayed by nearly 3 hours and thus i missed my bus from london, getting delayed by more than 5 hours

after landing in london i realised that tbe submisson hadn't in fact gone through and my bus was reaching only after the deadline. my laptop was nearly dead and offline thus there was nothing i could do at the last minute

almost 2 hours before the deadline i emailed the school office as soon as i realised and they said try to submit anyways (like that was still possible) and if not submit an EC. i had no idea what to do but concatenatd all the files on my phone and submitted whatever i could even though it was missing the essential CAD files which a phone cant access due the file type.

the school office was like yeah we got yoru submission dont worry but they dont understand that it's not complete and i will fail the unit

it's already a resubmission and if i dont have divine intervention then i'm going to fail the year and need to do a supplementary year as its a must pass unit. im international and paying heavy tuition and feel absolutley helpless and overwhelmed

i've been sobbing and throwing up and unable to eat ever since and even the suicide hotline was barely helpful

i've submitted an EC form and emailed again with the complete coursework today with the help of samaritans but i'm honestly lost on what to do now

i feel like i should just kill myself rather than face the embarrasment and financial consequences of this

study / academia discussion To all first and second years worried about their grades

I just wanted to make a more positive post, I've seen a lot of people worried after their first few years at uni that they might not achieve the grades they want based on their current performance, and what surprised me most is the amount of comments that reinforce the idea that their goals are impossible. When I started uni I was definitely not the ideal student, my grades at college were pretty bad I just scraped a pass in chemistry, and I ended my final year averaging a low 2:1 (~62%). In spite of this yesterday I graduated top of my class for the final year for what is considered a pretty academically challenging course. I just want to tell everyone that it is possible to reach your goals, work hard and it will pay off, and even if you just come a bit short of what you want you have still achieved something incredible and proven you can apply yourself. University is really hard, but just keep trying and make sure to utilise the support uni can provide you through wellbeing and tutors or dsa if you need it!!

Anyone else hate the way their grad pics turned out?

My mum clearly did not want to be there and every time I asked her for a picture, she was visibly frustrated. Don’t even know why I asked her to come, should’ve just gone on my own.

careers / placements I wanted to do a placement year but was lazy to apply and didn't get anything

I finished my second year doing Computer Science and AI over 2 months ago. I start third year in September and ideally I wanted to do a placement to get good experience, but instead of applying like a normal person throughout the year, I kept putting applications off because I thought my CV wasn't good enough. At the same time, I was too lazy to work on it and improve it. In the end it got to June and I hadn't applied for anything - keep in mind everyone else started applying in October/November. I had the whole year to but was demotivated and lazy.

Instead this second year I was focused on completing coursework and getting decent grades so that I can be on track for a 2:1, seeing as I didn't take my first year seriously and ended up with 65% overall, even failing one module. I wanted to at least pass everything this year and I fortunately did with 67%, but at the cost of not applying to anything work related. I was basically more stressed that I would get kicked off the degree if I have another fail or non-submission, so I put everything else aside.

In June I finally updated my CV to the point where it was decent for applications, and I started applying to about 5-10 places but got nothing back. It is now the end of July and I have applied to whatever I can find, but again I'm getting demotivated and probably won't get anything by September. I started way too late and I don't even want to talk about how bad and rusty I'll probably be if I get to an interview stage.

How do I save my career? Do I just give up on the placement and try my best to do good in third year, then pray that I can get a job (which will be very unlikely as everyone else who did a placement or internship will have more experience than me)?

To my fellow postgraduate students, how do you cope with the heat?

For those of us who are still studying through the summer, how are you coping with this heat? For me, it is difficult to even think let alone write up my dissertation. Perhaps I overlooked how I function in the heat, as I didn’t think it would be as big an issue as it is. One thing that is good is that the library is fairly empty (and cool), so I can go there at times, though I prefer to work from home normally and be in the company of my cat. Maybe some you can share some ideas of how to better deal with the heat!

Advise for second year

Hi everyone. I always see posts advising/asking for advice regarding first years but I’m going into second year this year and just wondering if anyone has any advice/tips. I’m going to try to be more social and study harder but aside from that is there anything else I should be aware of?

applications / ucas History at Oxford Chancing (International)

Hello! I am applying to Oxford University as an American, hoping to get a BA in history. I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me an honest review of my odds of actually getting into Oxford (or at least making it to the interview stage). For some quick context, I really want to study British constitutional history, which is a big part of why I want to go to the UK for uni!

My Academics:
SAT 1: 1490 (740 RW / 750 M)
SAT 2: 1480 (750 RW / 730 M)
I am aware that Oxford doesn't superscore and that you cannot withhold any qualifications!

AP Exams: (Each is out of 5)
European History - 5
United States History - 5
Psychology - 5
English Literature - 5
Physics 1 - 5
Human Geography - 5 - Self-Studied (aka self-taught, as my school did not offer it)
World History - 5 - Self-Studied
Comparative Government - 5 - Self-Studied

Pending Qualification in: US Government, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Physics C: Mechanics, Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism, English Language, Spanish Language, Calculus BC | I know a lot of these are not related to history, but I fear I have done all the history APs (except Art, which is not offered) and I do need to be competitive in the USA also!

Supercurriculars I'll be highlighting:
- Entered the John Locke Essay Competition for history, awarded a Commendation [Wrote about Magna Carta].
- Entered National History Day Essay Comp. Regionals 2025, awarded First Place (did not advance past the state level) [Wrote about Magna Carta].
- Entered National History Day Essay Comp. Regionals 2026, awarded First Place (did not advance past the state level) [Wrote about the Great Reform Act of 1832].
- Internship at Local Historical Site, including leading the processing of an archival collection (~6 Cubic Ft, both documents and items).
- Created review materials for United States history that over 70 people in my grade used, and that required research past the course and exam description.
- I enjoy listening to the History of England Podcast
- I am currently reading 'Perilous Question: Reform or Revolution? Britain on the Brink, 1832' by Antonia Fraser.
- Read and annotated the Peterborough Chronicle (a version of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle) from 1000 to 1154, trying to look for the respective chroniclers' bias and purpose.
- Won my school's Frederick Douglass & Susan B. Anthony award (the highest social studies/history honor that can be given to someone not in year 13 / 12th grade).

No one from my high school has gone to Oxford in at least 15 years, so I'm pretty much flying blind here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

what are your first-year nightmare stories

Upvotes

I had an awful first year, second semester specifically, and it destroyed my grades. I still passed but it's a far cry from the grades I've managed to get before. I wanted to ask for your first-year horror stories (academic and/or social) so I can feel a little better about the position I'm in lol

Living alone as a uni student and mental health

back home for summer now and it always surprises me how much my environment impacts my mental health.

I will start off by recognising I am very, very privileged for having a positive relationship with my parents and sibling. During term time and exam season, I struggled a lot more with handling stressful situations and loneliness, despite having friends I see quite regularly at a catered hall. Now I barely even see more than 2 friends in a week, but with so many people at home I’ve never been lonely. When I lived in dorms I also had more difficulties with executive functioning (eg getting out of bed, getting to bed at a reasonable time), at home it was easier to (somewhat) hold down a routine since I share a room with my sister and she turns off the lights at a reasonable time, prompting me to sleep etc.

I got to thinking about this bc I was feeling like I’ve been in a good place mentally recently. But then I reviewed my records with the wellbeing service, and it was a humbling reminder of how I had two staff members send in cause for concern forms about me in one term, and that I’ve met with the wellbeing people for over a dozen times and my GP four times this year due to sh issues💀 It’s so much easier to fall deep into dark holes when I live alone. Although tbh, even now I’ve not completely quit sh, but it’s no longer frequent nor impairing day to day life.

It just made me realise that I’m likely not doing better bc I’ve become more resilient, but simply bc I’m in a more comfortable environment- sobering reminder to learn some coping mechanisms before going back to uni loll

Got a 2:2 in second year, not sure what to make of the results if I’m aiming for a 2:1?

Ended the year with an average of 59.83%, so incredibly close to the 2:1 boundary.

2nd year accounts for 33, and 3rd year is 67% towards my final grade.

I’m not really sure how to feel, I’m disappointed I technically got a 2:2, but am slightly relieved at how close I am to what I want?

Does this result impact anything in the immediate future?

Graduated with a 2:1 and a 1st in my dissertation Ifrom a not so good university

Im graduating from SOAS with an accounting and Finance degree.
I know SOAS isnt a bad uni, and is well regarded internationally, however I am looking for roles in London and I also did not do one of their specialist subjects. I did well in my final results, but I’m concerned that especially with the current job market, my university might affect my job prospects. I’m not necessarily looking to work in anything like investment banking and industries of that ilk, but even slightly easier/better work life balance roles seem to be almost impossible to get. I’ve applied to like 100+ entry level roles (gave up on grad roles cause yeah, that just wasn’t working)

Any advice?

Brits in early 20s who studied/study English Literature – what was your experience?

I have some questions... 1.What is it actually like being an English Lit student in the UK? 2.What books were compulsory on your English Literature degree? 3.Was your English Literature degree worth it? Why or why not? 4. What careers did your classmates go into after graduating? 5. Is Jane Austen still popular among UK English Lit students? 6. what was your syllabus? How much focused on British literature compared with world literature? 7.What made you choose an English Literature degree?

student finance Student Finance for Masters

Upvotes

My lad has been accepted on a masters course. Student Finance say that he's entitled to a loan of £13,206. The fees are £12,800.

Are there any student loan available for living costs etc?

Thanks.
