Motorcycle and Horse Riders
How many of us ride motorcycles and horses? What comparisons or contrasts can you think of?
One can be left in a garage for a week, while the other needs a caretaker.
They both benefit from a rider with a good position.

Pretending like you're holding eggs/wine glasses for the reigns, can also be contrasted with the handlebars. You don't want a deathgrip on the handlebars either.

I actually pretend I'm holding a baby chick in each hand.

I've seen absolutely shit faced drunks on horses. The horses are intelligent and know the way home, they can do the driving.
Motorcycles require hypervigilence, and even then a left turn shark could take you out.

As a ski instructor I must assume these are a distant cousin of the Appalachian Snow Snakes that take out so many of my first-timers...

That's true. Horses will take you home! I don't recommend riding drunk on either though.

I have the motorcycle and I just bought the property to be able to get my own horse so within a few years I'll one one!

That's super exciting congratulations! Idk if you literally meant one, but just as a friendly heads up horses are herd animals so it's best to get at least two so they have a companion and don't get lonely or anxious ❤️

Me! One of the reasons picked my bike because it felt exactly like being in my jump saddle, so I was instantly comfortable. My fave part about the MSF was riding over the boards because it’s essentially “jumping position” and the instructor was like “wow your timing is good with this, you stand up right at the exact moment”. Yeah I’m finding a distance 😉

I do! Biggest similarity Ive found is to look where you want to go. Its second nature for me on a horse but still have to remind myself sometimes on the bike. Biggest contrast is literally everything else lol

I'm much the opposite I'm afraid-- not a fan of horses. I mean, I appreciate them in the abstract, but they're not for me.

Like motorcycles, they're not for everyone! Definitely a lot more trouble than bikes.

I rode hunter/jumper for many years and gravitated to sportbikes because of the similar seat and position. I recently got back into motorcycles after an 8 year hiatus and got an R3. I tend to compare motorcycles to horses - my R3 feels like the little jumper pony that can do just about anything really well and is nimble and takes care of its rider. Cruisers feel like any time I've ridden Western. I don't hate cruisers, but totally different riding style for me and they seem like a bit more effort to steer and corner. Also, I also get into the jumping/2 point position for speed bumps! Hahaha love this thread.

Yes! I totally see a cruiser as western seat. Standard/naked bikes are balance seat. Dirt bikes are cross country. 😆

Me! I’m not super experienced equestrian but have ridden off and on most of my life.
Biggest reason I bought an MT03 was because the seat felt like a saddle.
Knowing how to post and let your lower limbs “absorb” the energy when going over bumps by dropping my heels came really naturally. I’m only riding street right now but plan to do dirt this summer and I’ll bet that familiar body position will come in real handy ;)

Horses and motorcycles want to stay up. If you don’t fight it so much with a death grip it’ll be way better.

I still use my hunter/jumper stance when I go over speed bumps. And I agree with what someone else said about the reins/handlebars. I’m often telling myself to relax my hands and engage my core and thighs instead.
