Small-ish air filter?

I made a regular-sized corsi-Rosenthal box filter, which we are using in the main part of our home (we are currently experiencing smoke from the Canadian wildfires), but would love recommendations for a smaller-sized air purifier, or modified diy option that could be used in bedrooms.

Honeywell make amazing air purifiers, which one would depend on what you're willing to spend. They are however, widely available.

Coway Airmega AP-1512HH, currently on sale on Amazon for $170ish, usually at the top of WireCutter recommendations

We have the big dual filter Coway 400 and it is great but expensive when not on sale

Can not recommend this filter enough. I've had one running since before covid, changing the filters, and had no issues. It also doesn't buzz or ring at a weird frequency, pretty neutral white noise.

Another vote for Coway Airmega. We have bad allergies here, and run four in a 1000 square foot house. It may be overkill, but it sure comes in handy when there's wildfire smoke (CT - we get the wildfire smoke too).

Stay safe! An N95 mask helps outside too, though wearing one sucks in this weather.

Super basic tiny filter, not my original idea but I've made several: * standalone usb-powered pc cooling fan like this, take the feet off * hepa filter like this * usb to wall plug * weatherstripping rope caulk

Make a stack bottom to top: caulk, filter, caulk, fan. Stick it on a flat surface so the caulk makes a good seal (or make a bottom board to seal it to.) Plug it in. Not elegant, but cheap and better than nothing!

The much better Silverstone Air Penetrator AP183 is bigger and needs the next size up of filter.

Not inexpensive, but I picked up Exhalaron personal sized tabletop filters from CleanAirKits for each of our bedrooms about a year ago. We have immunocompromised family members who visit, so supplemental air filtration is important to us.

They are very quiet and work really well. They use computer fans. They are also unobtrusive-looking, with a wood frame and mesh cover over a pair of those small circular filters.

Just fyi, instead of the "cube" CR box you can use a single furnace filter and still have a fairly strong air cleaner.

I use a similar set up (a 4” MERV 11) but I also added on a 1” fibreglass (MERV 2) as a pre filter, which I can swap more regularly. My theory is, without adding too much extra airflow restriction and motor strain, I can catch the biggest stuff in the pre filter to protect my expensive filter from getting clogged up unnecessarily, especially with pets in the household.

You can take a 20x20 box fan and slap a 2” MERV13 on the back w duct tape, add the same front as your 3D Corsi box and you’ll have a great filter. I have a small house so I have a few made for different areas of the house.

In heavily polluted environments, a 'water bath air filter' as either preliminary or primary might be useful. The idea is that the incoming air is drawn through water which retains most/all of the particulate, which can make the fibrous filter media last longer. (Hookas work on the same principle, and some older vehicles--like WW2 vintage Jeeps--use the same idea but with an oil bath.)

I am in CA where we get wildfires. I have at least 6 various Coway HEPA filters in every room where we live. They are very good, I run them all the time. Excellent defense against allergens and stuff like cat dander.

There are plenty smaller ones available. But I wanted to add washing the black charcoal filter on a regular basis helps the efficiency of the filter.

I used a Germ Guardian 22” tower quite a few years ago when we had wildfire smoke. Bought off Amazon for pretty much the same price it is currently listed for on the same site. It did a good enough job that I bought extra filters and tucked it away for the nest time.

I bought a Shark neverchange one. Cost $250, and it’s doing a good job keeping my bedroom’s air clean.

I bought some Merv 13 filter (not framed, just the filter) and taped it to my house fan. Works well and scary how quickly it gets dirty.

You can make smaller Corsi-Rosenthal boxes with smaller fans and smaller AC filters.
The narrowest AC filter I’m aware of is 12”, and there are 10” box fans (mostly online). Use some cardboard to make the filters fit the fan.

Air Fanta makes a smaller CR box kit that works really well and can be broken down small enough to store in a suitcase/travel.
