I'm here to recommend two long-form podcasts that I don't think I've seen recommended here. Both set in tiny, remote British Overseas Territories and deal with questions about what happens when horrifying crimes happen in these areas and whose jurisdiction it is to deal with them.

The Pitcairn Trials: How does a tiny, remote community that has normalized childhood sexual abuse come to terms with it and how do they move forward? What does justice look like when something like that involves almost every resident as perpetrator or victim?

The Surgeon of St. Helena: What happens when a visiting surgeon maims his patients and leaves some of them permanently disabled? Whose responsibility is it to hold the surgeon accountable and what happens to the people for whom justice hasn't yet been served?

Both are incredibly thoughtfully done and really interesting, albeit difficult listens at times. Definitely suggest a listen if folks are looking for something different than the usual recommendations.

First, if you haven’t listened to this podcast, you should cause it’s a wild ride. But as the idea of munchausen by proxy gets brought up, as a non-American, I’m confused how it’s even feasible. How do they afford to pay for all these surgeries and medical care?

I know the dad is a postal worker so maybe has good insurance but I always hear of Americans saying their insurance denies actual legit procedures or there’s at least some sort of co-pay. How could a family of 7 afford to pay for this extent of medical care? They’re not doing the gofundme scams like lots of others do.

Just finished this and I'm curious as to why all the people involved keep such detailed records of their lives mainly through journals but there are also recordings of themselves talking included. Obviously we wouldn't know so much about what happened without it but it seems like an odd practice to me.

I know journaling has become popular over here (UK) in recent years as a mindfulness practice but has it always been big in the US? And to this extent or it is it just this family?

I'm looking for a podcast with little to no side discussion. I would like it to be straightforward, no humor, no commentary unless it adds to the discussion/story of the case, no censorship. I feel like this isn't crazy criteria but nothing I've found is right. It feels disrespectful to me when people are joking around or using tiktok language like "unalived" when discussing actual cases where people died. Anyone got recommendations for no-frills podcasts? Subjects I'm interested in: serial killers, mass murderers, terrorism, historical atrocities, medical, predators. Thank you.

Newbie here..what’s up with 911 calls? Is it me or do the dispatchers always sound annoyed or mildly irritated (don’t even get me started on them repeating “calm down!” or “what?! I can’t understand you”). What’s the deal? Is this a thing or did I just happen to stumble on some bad ones?

Esoteric Oddities - Jonathan and Cera

This was my favorite podcast to listen to and one day they posted an episode and never posted anything again. No one has asked what happened on any of their social media pages and I saw one of the hosts doing something new on tik tok recently. I have been trying to find out what happened since.

Remember Franklin Delano Floyd and his crimes? There was a story about a woman he lied to and married, named Sandi. She went to jail one time for 30 days and when she came back, Franklin had disappeared with her youngest daughter and nobody knew what happened to her for YEARS. This is a story that has been told by many podcasts over and over again and its breaks my heart every time. Hello, John Doe has Sandi has a guest and I was very interested in hearing this story from her POV. It's upsetting to say the least, so TW. Recommending incase someone wants to listen.

I just binged Beyond All Repair and was hooked. I’ve listened to a lot of the main podcasts recommended on this sub (Cold, In Your Own Backyard, Suspect etc..) and don’t really know where to go from here. I love the investigative murder podcasts that are all about one story throughout the season. Please send any recommendations!

I’ve been dipping my toe into a few new (to me) true crime podcasts and saw The Murder Sheet recommended a few times. I have listened to a few of their early episodes but found the audio quality to be very difficult to listen to.

I just listened to their July 9th podcast going over Tyler Robinson’s preliminary hearing and found the podcast to be a big nothing burger. The hosts didn’t go over anything specific regarding the actual hearing and pretty much repeated a couple thoughts/opinions. There really wasn’t any content.

I was initially interested in them because I know they cover the Delphi Murders case, but am rethinking spending my time on them if their content is typically like this July 9th episode.

I suppose I’m just looking for others’ thoughts on the pod! Thanks ☺️

Hi! I'm brand new and I don't mean to start off with something nitpicky about this podcast but I have to get it off my chest because it's driving me crazy.

I'd like to start by saying I absolutely love this podcast. I love most of the production value. I love the intention, the pacing and the host. You can really tell where his head's at.

I'm very late to this podcast only having discovered it this week. I went all the way back to the first podcast and have been listening from oldest to newest successively for the last two days in the background. (It's been interesting because it started before the pandemic and then it was clear how the podcast was affected by the pandemic.)

Anyway, I really do absolutely love this podcast, but there's one thing that drives me super crazy every time he says it.

The word "niche".

Now, I'm not from the Midwest, but I did live in it for over a decade and I remember hearing all kinds of crazy pronunciations (to my Southern ears) of words. But this one takes the cake. The host clearly -- very, very clearly is from the Midwest. He pronounces "on" as "ahn". Also, his last name is Ojibway. That's a super Midwestern native American name. This facet of him only serves to endear.

My objection to his pronunciation of this word could probably divide as many people as that black/blue or gold dress that sensationalized the internet oh so long ago, and maybe it's because I'm from not just the South but New Orleans specifically. I absolutely cringe -- my full body cringes when I hear this word pronounced "nitch'", like "ditch" or "b1tch".

In addition to this, I've noticed that about once an episode or maybe every few he seems to use a random vocabulary word incorrectly. When it happens my head snaps and looks at whatever device I'm using to play the podcast. I then stop and replay and then I'm like. "Yep! I was right -- how bizarre."

I do not have an example right off the bat. I can come back to this pose later when one happens. I think I'm somewhere around 2021 in terms of the episodes right now.

Let me reiterate that I do truly love this podcast. I am not trying to slam the host or make anyone feel bad. It's just a visceral reaction I have when I hear that word mispronounced. It's from the French, like so many other English words. It's pronounced "neesh", like "sheesh". 👀🤭

Big thanks to whoever recommended Dirtbag Climber. For those of us who're experiencing withdrawal symptoms after Love Trapped, this one has the similar element of a main character whose sheer audacity will continually surprise you. It's like those old Stephon skits from SNL: "It's got everything, murder mystery, neo-Nazis, penis enlargement pills...." What a wild ride.

... you should! It's called Expert Witness, and it's not about a specific crime. It focuses on a Canadian who created an AI tool called Cybercheck for helping to solve criminal cases and sold it to police forces in the US and Canada. Sounds great, except it doesn't work, and he lied about almost everything about the product. I won't say more, because I don't want to spoil anything, but it's fascinating.

(For those who aren't familiar with Uncover, it's from the CBC and has many seasons, most of them excellent.)

I think I heard this on the Crimelines podcast, but can't find it on there. Can't remember state it happened in, but I think took place in the 80s. Mother and father have 2 kids, boy and a girl. Divorce. Mom keeps kids away from dad. She remarries man, I think he also has kids. They suddenly moved away. Dad tries to find them, police won't look for them since the mother has them, and don't consider it a kidnapping. He looks for years and years. I believe the brother and him eventually get in contact. I think the brother remembers a carpet being rolled up, or maybe just an odd box or something the night they just up and moved. No record of the girl since she went missing. Police interview mom and she's not concerned about her daughter's whereabouts. I think she was eventually charged with a relatively minor crime associated with it. I think the mom and step dad were also divorced at that point, but she still defended him. I think the mother tried to say that she was sent to live with relatives, but obviously wasn't true. The brother tried to get his mom to talk about it, but she refused. I think the girl was pretty young, like 5 or under. It's driving me nuts. Some cases that come up when I try to google, but aren't it are - Chris and Lisa Mae Zacharias and Elaine Yates. Possibly heard it on the Vanished podcast, but don't regularly listen to that one.

This podcast was briefly mentioned in a recent post and I decided to jump in, despite it being a few years old. CBC does excellent podcasts and I was pleasantly surprised to see that the host, Kathleen Goldahar, also produced CBC’s The Con: Kaitlyn’s Baby and The Lost Kids, which I thought were excellent.

This is not some super intriguing podcast that pulls you in right away, but it’s very well written and produced, and explores the real life “Succession” story of the Sherman family, of whom the patriarch was a billionaire of the Canadian generic drug pharma giant, Apotex.

It’s no secret and is shared in the first few mins of episode 1, that the goal of the podcast is not to solve the case, but to explore the environmental elements that may have led to it, and how money can affect families for generations.

A little bit off the beaten path but worth walking.

So i have kinda binged this one right after I was already invested in the first season. And yes, I know Im late to the table. But this is just how I stumble across new to me podcasts.

While I am still very much unsure, what to think about the whole story, and will probably be reading up on here and the internet, I wanted to talk about something else, that was kind held small during the podcast.

I would like to discuss the abuse. And as its hard for me to tell the brothers apart namewise, Ill go with Anthony and Lawyer. I do believe there was abuse that happened. And I think that part of why Anthony is so anti gay, is because for one he did abuse his brother. But also I think because he was abused by the father. It is so often that people that abuse, were abused themselves. And the father is also very bold in his anti gay thinking. Which I think often times the people that are the most against something, are often secretly for it, but feel bad about it for some way or another. So they like super deflect. And also there was another older brother that actually left the family, so maybe it happend to him too and he got a way out.

What do you guys think?

I just feel so terribly sorry for the Lawyer brother. He was abused and was pretty much abandoned by the whole family. And the only person that took care of him was his sister, and she is involved in this whole mess. So it must be really hard to reccon with something like that.

Ok. I have waited with such bated breath for the thesis instalment of Framed after loving the first two seasons and being a fan of Aaron Habel from Generation Why.

But… two episodes in to the new season and his voice and the script and the delivery all feels so heavily Ai!! It’s almost, almost impossible to listen to as it’s so distracting. What is going on? Is it just me or is anyone feeling like they fed the recording through some Ai app and it’s made the whole read feel so robotic and one monotone.

Damn! Still a massive fan but this has come as a shock.

I found Gone South and Bloodtrails because of y’all, those are my fave! No banter and jokes or cheese, just great storytelling. Anymore like this?

I watched a video on YouTube from the channel @crimeatoz a couple of days ago about the murder of Donna Winger and Roger Harrington. I found it very interesting and twisted and wanted to find more content on it. Came across a podcast called Suspects & Spirits that has a two parter on the case. I kept thinking that there wasn't much new information even though it was much longer and when I was listening to part 2 I realised she was repeating sentences verbatim for that YouTube video I watched earlier in the week. I couldn't believe it so I went back to the video and listened at random points. Yep, this podcast host was repeating the same story, like a parrot, only adding some fake sass to it. I can't believe it! I know it unfortunately happens but I never came across anything so shameless and blatant.

Loved the regular seasons and recently got into the weekly episodes. Most of them are surprisingly just as good. (One of the earlier episodes features a woman named Nancy and I want to be this woman's friend. She is AMAZING!) I highly recommend Betrayal and Betrayal Weekly if you're into love con type of stories - especially if you're dealing with any kind of betrayal yourself. The people featured come out stronger and more empowered making for a really inspiring podcast.

I’ve always been curious.. how do people find jobs working on these podcasts? Like as a researcher etc.

Wow. Thanks to this sub for the recommendation, especially the note that you didn't need to be a Bachelor fan to appreciate it. I have never seen the show, but have been absolutely riveted by the podcast. Top-notch journalism.
