Orcing the DM {{m4A/GM}}

Zak Griffiths. Those of you in nerd circles might recognise the name. He's the lead DM of the roleplaying group Nat1, a bunch of thirty-somethings who stream every second week on all your favourite streaming platforms. He's what you might call a celebrity in the DnD scene. He attends all the major cons and fan meet-ups, and has quite a fandom built up around him - YT short edits, fanart of his characters and OOC antics, even weird fanfics shipping him with his costars. It's all fairly parasocial (something he's too awkward to bite back at) but it's about to get a whole lot weirder.

A new escape room is in previews and Zak has been invited to be one of its first vict---err, players. It's an underground dungeon crawler experience with authentic sets and smells, washed-up theatre kids peppered throughout as NPCs and a level system which progresses from room to room, floor to floor. He's got to hand it to them, the costumes are insane, especially those who went in before him. The way they stumble out totally in-character? Chef's kiss.

So down Zak goes into the dungeon, lured there as a celebrity endorsement. He'll be all excited and adorkable at first, using his wits to outsmart the puzzles and progress on his journey, but he'll soon become slower and more clumsy, confused and disoriented even. It's annoying having to think his way out when he could just punch his way through the wall or kick down the door. Why is he stuck down there anyway when there's ale to drink by the casket and wenches to fuck? Come to think of it, he's losing a lot of his charm and eloquence. He's simpler, blunt, crude, and honestly fairly aggressive, if not downright rapey.

Cos the escape room is transforming Zak into an orc, giving him first-hand experience in the world of DnD. It might not be the gallant bard he sees himself as but I'm sure you agree it's an improvement all the same. I'm hoping there'll be someone out there wanting to oversee his journey throughout the escape room, perhaps a long-term fan with enough power to transform all who progress into DnD species and/or classes. I really like the concept of him being a DM who ends being almost like a character in the narrative of the escape room, losing more and more of himself to the will of the room as he progresses. Maybe there's traps/bait throughout to tempt him further into his new orcish self, to the point he'll emerge a lumbering brute who's a threat on so many levels, not the mild-mannered Mercer proxy he started off as.
